3 Jesus’ Promise of Rest READCome to MeA few possible next stepsAre you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Do you long for deep rest in our deeply divided, increasingly violent country and world? Take a few moments each day to read, reflect, practice, and pray…REFLECTPRACTICEPRAYAccording to Matthew 11:28, Jesus oers rest to those who are weary, not to those who are worthy. Therefore, this week we’ll read stories about Jesus giving rest to the weary; to those burdened by religion, unclean spirits, physical illness, and/or their sins.Monday: Matthew 4:23-25Tuesday: Matthew 8:1-4Wednesday: Matthew 9:2-8Thursday: Matthew 9:9-13Friday: Matthew 11:2-6Saturday: 12:1-14Sunday: Catch up on your reading! After reading the passages above, take a moment to reflect on the following questions:• Who receives rest – and what kind of rest? – from Jesus in this passage?• How am I like – and unlike – the people in this passage who were blessed by Jesus?• How is their prayer to Jesus a prayer I can pray?Look daily for an opportunity to “lighten the load” for someone else; not because they deserve it or have earned it, but just because they need it.Take a moment to pray the classic hymn “Just As I Am”, written in 1835 by Charlotte Elliott, an English poet who, suering from multiple conditions, spent most of her adult life enduring great suering and confined to her bed.Just as I am, without one plea, but that thy blood was shed for me,and that thou bidst me come to thee,O Lamb of God, I come, I come.Just as I am, and waiting notto rid my soul of one dark blot,to thee whose blood can cleanseeach spot,O Lamb of God, I come, I come.Just as I am, though tossed aboutwith many a conflict, many a doubt, fightings and fears within, without,O Lamb of God, I come, I come.Just as I am, poor, wretched, blind;sight, riches, healing of the mind, yea, all I need in thee to find,O Lamb of God, I come, I come.Just as I am, thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;because thy promise I believe,O Lamb of God, I come, I come.Just as I am, thy love unknownhath broken every barrier down;now, to be thine, yea thine alone,O Lamb of God, I come, I come.

On Communion Sundays, a special oering is taken to support a Mission of Cannon Church. The Special Oering and Mission of the Month for June will go to support the Bishop's Appeal which focuses on raising vital funds for The Endowment for Theological Education outside the United States, providing permanent scholarships for emerging pastors in Africa, Europe, and the Philippines. While over 70% of U.S. Clergy hold a theological degree, fewer than 5% do outside of the U.S. Your oering can help close that gap and extend the mission of The United Methodist Church.
