STORY !
EXTRAORDINARY SURVIVAL
19/20 December, 1971 : Maria Koepcke [mother] wanted to return to Panguana in the Amazon rainforest.
22 December, 1971 : Juliane Koepcke [daughter] wish to attend her graduation ceremony in Lima.
24 December, 1971 : All flights were fully booked, so they booked flight tickets on LANSA, an airliner with a poor reputation, from Lima heading to Pucallpa,
the city with an airport closest to Panguana. At 3.2 kilometres in the air, lightning struck the plane during a severe thunderstorm.
On 24 December, 1971, the plane that was flying from Lima to Panguana with Maria Koepcke and Juliane Koepcke was struck by, lightning in severe
thunderstorm, disintegrating in the sky and crashing into the Amazon rainforest. How the lone survivor managed to survive the crash in the rainforest remains
one of the great survival stories of all time.
Juliane Koepcke was the lone survivor of a plane crash in 1971. Not only that, she survived a further 11 days alone in the Amazon rainforest with sweets being
her only food. Juliane was still strapped to her seat when her plane broke up in the mid-air and sent her plummeting from an altitude of 3,000 metres into the
Amazon rainforest. She saw a canopy of trees spiralling towards her and then she lost consciousness.
When she regained consciousness the next morning, she realised that she had survived because of the airplane seat she had been strapped to and the two seats on
each side buffered her fall to the ground. Miraculously, she had escaped with a broken collar bone, a swollen shut right eye, a gash on her arm and a torn knee
ligament. Instantly, she went in search of her mother who had been seated next to her but she did not find her. She could not find the rest of the passengers as
well.
When she was 14, her parents set up research station the Amazon rainforest in Panguana. There she became a ‘jungle child’ and
learned survival techniques. However, when the education authorities disapproved, she turned to a school in Lima.
She found a small stream and waded through knee-high water relying on the survival principles she had learnt from her father
that tracking downstream would eventually lead to civilization. She kept close to the stream while she battled heat and rain for the
next ten days looking for help. By then, flies had laid eggs on her wound, hatching into maggots under her skin.
On the eleventh day, she saw a motorized boat moored at river. She found a can of diesel fuel and poured in on the wounds to
disinfect them and removed the maggots. Thanks to the jungle survival skills she had learnt from her father. She found a shack
nearby and went to sleep. The next morning some locals found her, gave her some food and sent her to the hospital.
Although she was exhausted, she was overjoyed to be reunited with her anxious father. Her mother’s body was recovered a few
days later. Finally, her ordeal was over but it took her a long time to overcome the nightmare she had lived through.

ACCOUNT
It was the last day of a school holiday I was having on Langkawi island in
Malaysia. The hotel was enormous. They were many people from inside
and outside the country until it were crowded every day. I had learnt to
wake up early and took a morning walk. After that, I enjoyed a delicious
meal for breakfast in the hotel restaurant. I’d go for swimming at the
beach.
Unluckily, on that day a rude teenager boy step over me and drop his ice
cream straight to my face. I was furious and I asked him, “What’s your
point ?” He replied, “Ops, I’m really sorry.” but with a smirk in his smile.
This rude boy was driving me up the wall. I tried to be patient and turned
around to leave.
I was embarrassing when every people laughed at me when they looked at
the ice cream that covered my face. I just wanted the ground to open up
and swallow me !

A SAMPLE OF AN EMAIL February 21,2016
Dear Dianne,
It was lovely to hear from you, and this time you had some interesting things to tell me. I can understand
about your parents worrying about you travelling around the world but you will be pleased to hear that I
think you have made the right decision. Now is the good time for you to travel.
However, I am not sure that you have thought carefully about what travelling involves. No doubt that is
why you are asking me for advice! You imply in your letter that you are going to travel alone. Have thought
about travelling with someone else? Having a companion can make things a lot more easier – and safer.
Also, why not live, and work, in one country instead of keeping on the move all the time? Staying in one
place means you can make more friends and get to know a different language and culture much better and
if you have a job, you will always have some money to live on. Your parents would be happier with that
because they would know where to contact you. If you are constantly travelling, they won’t know where
you are. This is a possible compromise that you must consider.
Globetrotting is very exciting – I wish I were going with you! On the other hand, there are serious dangers.
I have just heard from another friend who have been robbed of everything except for the clothes he is
wearing, just because he fell asleep on a long-distance coach journey. Keep in touch!
Sincerely,
Darlene

POEM
THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And both that morning equally lay
And sorry I could not travel both In leaves no step had trodden black.
And be one traveller, long I stood Oh, I kept the first for another day!
And looked down one as far as I could Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
To where it bent in the undergrowth; I doubted if I should ever come back.
Then took the other, as just as fair, I shall be telling this with a sigh
And having perhaps the better claim, Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Because it was grassy and wanted Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
wear; I took the one less travelled by,
Though as for that the passing there And that has made all the difference.
Had worn them really about the same,
