Dollars and Guts

Bring a Trailer highlights our changing market —
and our gut feelings

By NICK JAYNES
WHEN MY EDITOR, Jim Pickering, gave me this assignment, he told me the sky
was the limit; I could pick any kind of collectable vehicles I wanted… so long as
they demonstrated a shift in the collector market that I could point to.

This irked me.
Why? Because I’m very much gut-driven. Forget the facts. What does my gut say?
In a lot of ways, the market does the same thing.
But because I am a respectful contributor, I adhered to the guidelines and
hunted for evidence to back up my claims. Here I used Bring a Trailer’s scatter
graph auction results tracker. The rest? All guts.
Most of the vehicles I chose this round are what used to be everyday driver
vehicles. No rally and race cars for the road — it seems that even more plebeian
models are becoming collectable, which is both heartening and shocking at the
same time.
Nevertheless, here’s what madness the Internet wrought on the collector car
world this quarter.
