SPORTS SPORTS TUESDAY | DEC 19, 2023 28 Confident Tiger Woods optimistic for comeback following family weekend at PNC Championship TIGER WOODS says he has been encouraged by his performance in two December events, the first competitive golf for the 15- time major winner since April ankle surgery. Woods, who turns 48 later this month, had not played since the Masters eight months ago before placing 18th of 20 in the Hero World Challenge two weeks ago. “A lot of things are aching a lot more than my ankle, which is the way it goes,” Woods said. “I’ll be able to walk and play. We’ve been working out hard, been able to recover.” On Sunday, he and 14-yearold son Charlie Woods combined to shoot 61 and grab a share of fifth at the PNC Championship in Orlando, Florida. They finished on 19-under 125 in the parent-child pairs event to stand six strokes adrift of German winner Bernhard Langer and his son Jason. Woods had struggled to walk four rounds after severe leg injuries suffered in a 2021 car crash but has said he plans to compete once a month next year thanks to a strong fitness recovery. “We’ve been training every day, which is great,” Woods said. “It has been nice to knock off a lot of the rust and some of the doubt I’ve had because quite frankly I haven’t hit a shot that counted in a long time. “So having to post a score and hit shots on the right number, hit shots with consequence, it has been nice.” Woods says his surgically repaired right ankle, which once had him limping through rounds at majors, is no longer such an issue. “The ankle was fine because it’s now fused but other parts were definitely aching,” Woods said. “The fact we were able to train right away and get after it, and start hitting balls, it was encouraging.” Woods is not exempt for next year’s US Open, but the threetime US Open champion would likely receive an exemption. “As of right now, no, I’m not in,” Woods said. “Whether or not I have to formally ask them or they invite me or give me an exemption or I have to go qualify, who knows? I don’t know what the process is.” Woods said his comeback events have boosted his confidence that he can still strike the golf ball competitively with the world’s best. “If I’m able to practice and do the things I know I can do, and prepare, I know I can still do it,” Woods said. “I can still hit the golf ball. It’s just a matter of prepping and get enough reps in and get enough work in and being right physically, and endurance capability of it. “I haven’t had the leg good enough where I’ve been able to compete and play a lot of rounds.” – AFP Dynamic duo fire Inter four points clear LAUTARO MARTINEZ and Marcus Thuram shot Inter Milan four points clear at the top of Serie A with a goal each in yesterday’s 2- 0 win at Lazio which continued their thrilling strike partnership. Inter’s dynamic attacking duo made sure their team took full advantage of closest rivals Juventus only drawing at Genoa on Friday to put daylight between Simone Inzaghi’s side and the rest of the chasing pack. The pair have scored 22 of Inter’s 39 Serie A goals this term as they gun to beat local rivals AC Milan – nine points back in third after beating Monza 3-0 – to 20 league titles. Inzaghi has never won the Scudetto as a coach but his team have been by far Italy’s best over the 16 matches played so far and continued their charge against a team where the coach spent most of his playing career. His attentions now turn to Monday’s draw for the Champions League last 16, where he predicted a rematch of last season’s final with Manchester City. AC Milan strolled to victory at the San Siro with a 3-0 win against Monza. Bologna finish the weekend fourth after an impressive 2-0 win against top-four rivals Roma and jump a point above champions Napoli and Fiorentina, who beat Verona 1-0 earlier in the day. Udinese are one point above the relegation zone after throwing away a twogoal lead to draw 2-2 with Sassuolo. – AFP FORMER Formula One world champion Jenson Button says his old teammate Lewis Hamilton needs “the right car” to return to the front of the grid next season with Red Bull favourites again to clean up in 2024. For the second year running, Mercedes driver Hamilton failed to win a grand prix as Max Verstappen won 19 of the 22 races with Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez taking two of the other three. “Red Bull are going to be at the front again next year,” Button told AFP. “They had a strong car this year and they’ve been able to work on next year’s car. “The thing is, if you just look at the results of the race, you go ‘Oh Max Verstappen won again’ but when you actually watch the races, there have been some amazing races this year. “Max hasn’t had it all his own way. He’s come out on top in the end but there have been some great fights this season. “I have enjoyed the year. Would I like more people winning? Yes of course. But it’s just not happened.” Button knows a thing or two about domination having won six of the first seven races in 2009, a start that launched him to the title with Brawn. And he has an admiration for the single-mindedness with which Verstappen set about his business. “I think Max has done such an amazing job,” said Button. “He’s not put a foot wrong. He’s obviously driving a good car, you don’t win without a good car, but you’ve just got to compare him to where his teammate was most races. It’s a big difference. “Going into 2024, Red Bull are still the favourites but I think the other teams will be a bit closer. “It’s not going to be easy to beat Max in a Red Bull if his head is in the right place.” Button who shared a pit with Hamilton when they were both at McLaren added: “Lewis wouldn’t race if he didn’t think he wasn’t good enough. He is definitely good enough to win races and to win a championship – with the right car. “Coming up against Max is difficult but if Lewis is in a car that suits him and Max is in a car that suits him… I look forward to that fight. Hopefully we will see it before Lewis retires.” – AFP Button expects Hamilton to bounce back Stuttgart win Bayern’s ‘best game of year’ HARRY KANE said Bayern Munich’s 3-0 win over fourth-placed Stuttgart was the team’s “best game of the year so far”, after the reigning champions moved back within four points of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. Kane scored twice and now has 20 goals from just 14 league matches since joining Bayern in the summer from Tottenham. “It’s probably our best game so far this year against a really tough side,” Kane told reporters. “Obviously they’re right behind us in the league, big game just before the winter break, and we were dominant through the whole game. “They had very few chances, we had countless chances, we could have scored a few more.” Bayern came into the match missing several first-team players through injury or illness, including Leon Goretzka, Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Kingsley Coman and Noussair Mazraoui. Leverkusen’s 3-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt, who beat Bayern 5-1 last weekend, before kickoff meant Kane’s side were in danger of falling further behind Xabi Alonso’s men. “Bayer Leverkusen are still going strong, they’re still up there, four points ahead, so we just have to win as many games as possible,” added Kane, who is still waiting to win the first trophy of his career. “There’s still a long way to go, we’re not even halfway through the season yet so you can’t get carried away. “We needed to show a reaction after last week, which I think we did.” Bayern take on Wolfsburg on Thursday (3.30am Malaysian time) in their final game before the two-week winter break. “Hopefully we can get the three points on Wednesday and we can get to the break in a good position. From January is where the business end starts.” – AFP Lewis Hamilton (left) and Jenson Button. – AFPPIX Tiger Woods plays his shot from the first tee during the final round of the PNC Championship. – AFPPIX

SPORTS SPORTS TUESDAY | DEC 19, 2023 30 HOLDERS Manchester City were handed a tie against FC Copenhagen in yesterday’s draw for the Champions League last 16, from which the meeting of last season’s runners-up Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid appears the standout tie. Pep Guardiola’s City, who are looking to retain the title they won in Istanbul last June, will be expected to comfortably get the better of the Danish side, who qualified from their group at the expense of Manchester United after beating the Red Devils 4-3 at home. Inter, the Serie A leaders, were one of the teams to avoid after finishing second in their group and their meeting with Atletico will see Diego Simeone, the coach of the Spanish club, come up against a team with whom he spent two years as a player in the late 1990s. French champions Paris Saint-Germain, who have gone out in the last 16 in each of the last two seasons and in five of the last seven campaigns, were also braced for a tough draw having come second in their group behind Borussia Dortmund. Barcelona’s meeting with Italian champions Napoli is another standout tie, while Arsenal will be expected to get the better of Porto. Bayern Munich will be strong favourites against Lazio and 14-time European champions Real Madrid will also be heavily fancied against RB Leipzig. The other tie sees Dortmund come up against PSV Eindhoven, who are coached by former Borussia manager Peter Bosz and are through to the last 16 for the first time in eight years. The first legs will take place in mid-February with the return matches in March. This season’s Champions League final will be staged at Wembley in London on June 1. – AFP Gunners break Brighton spell Arteta wants clinical finishing from Jesus and Havertz ARSENAL seized pole position in the Premier League with a 2-0 win against Brighton on Sunday, but Mikel Arteta demanded more clinical finishing from his title chasers. Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz struck in the second half at the Emirates Stadium to ensure Arsenal’s dominant display did not go to waste. Outclassed Brighton managed just one shot on target, but Arteta was frustrated that Arsenal had 16 efforts without making the breakthrough in the first half. Arsenal eventually found the back of the net as Jesus nodded in from close range, before a smart Havertz finish secured the points. “Incredible performance,” Arteta told the BBC. “A joy to watch from the start to the end. The way we did it against this very good team. “We have great players that can define games and finish actions. Today we needed too many, especially in big spaces, too many situations to finish the game,” Arteta said. “That was the fear, especially after halftime, that it could be one of those days because the moment you give something to this team they’ll take it. “We had to patient but at the same time we had to be really determined against this team. The second you have doubts against this team they open you up, they start to frustrate you and dominate with the ball. We didn’t do that. “We didn’t allow them to do that. We showed a lot of maturity, and a lot of intelligence. This game against them requires them to be really intelligent.” With a crucial visit to second-placed Liverpool looming on Saturday, Arteta admitted he was concerned about Arsenal’s fitness issues. The north Londoners are one point ahead of Liverpool after the Reds were held to a goalless draw by Manchester United yesterday. “We had some issues in the camp and with Jorginho too we had another one. It’s five, six now. So, we need players,” Arteta said. Arteta was back on the touchline having served a one-match ban at Aston Villa last week after accumulating three yellow cards. It was a small blot on the copybook on a day where Arsenal put Brighton to the sword. The Seagulls arguably looked leggy following their Europa League exerts in beating Marseille on last Friday. “Arsenal played much better than us,” conceded De Zerbi. “They deserved to win the game. We suffered a lot. I think Arsenal are one of the best, maybe this season the best team in the Premier League. “We are not used to suffering in this way. We are used to controlling the game.” – AFP/The Independent Man City to play Copenhagen in Champions League last 16 ASTON VILLA manager Unai Emery pledged to tackle his players’ behaviour after ugly scenes towards the end of their 2-1 win at Brentford on Sunday. Keane Lewis-Potter opened the scoring for the home side on the stroke of halftime but the game changed when Brentford defender Ben Mee was sent off about 20 minutes from time after flying into Leon Bailey. Alex Moreno levelled in the 77th minute, with Ollie Watkins completing the turnaround eight minutes later. Watkins’ celebration in front of his old fans caused an on-pitch stir, with the referee brandishing yellow cards to Ezri Konsa and Saman Ghoddos. Villa midfielder Boubacar Kamara was shown a red card deep into stoppage time for violent conduct. The victory kept Emery’s highflying side within a point of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table ahead of the Liverpool v Manchester United game later on Sunday. Emery said he would take action to tackle the indiscipline. “At the end some moments, some behaviour, of us as well, I’m going to manage our behaviour and take control of it,” he told the BBC. “I will analyse it with our players because it was not normal. “We were a bit excited and we needed control of ourselves. When you are reacting like that, other players and the other opponent is maybe not being in good behaviour like the match needed. “Maybe it’s not the best for football and for us but always we have very good behaviour with the referees, always respect their decisions, VAR and I will keep doing the same.” Also on Sunday, Mohammed Kudus scored twice to help West Ham get back on track in the Premier League with a 3-0 victory over Wolves at London Stadium. A dominant West Ham looked a different side to the one that suffered a 5-0 thrashing by Fulham at Craven Cottage seven days previously. David Moyes’ home side showed little sign of fatigue from the 2-0 victory against Freiburg on Thursday that sealed their place in the last 16 of the Europa League. This win moves West Ham to eighth in the Premier League, while Wolves stay 13th, 10 points clear of the relegation zone. – AFP/Agencies Emery to tackle Villa indiscipline after Brentford win JUVENTUS want to sign Manchester City and England midfielder Kalvin Phillips in January, with the 28-yearold said to be open to the move. CRYSTAL PALACE have expressed an interest in Arsenal and England striker Eddie Nketiah, 24, during the January transfer window. ARSENAL and Manchester City are both targeting Brazil midfielder Douglas Luiz, 25, with neither club put off by Aston Villa’s £100m (RM596m) valuation. ENGLISH winger Jadon Sancho’s representatives are trying to force a move away from Manchester United, but a swap deal involving the 23-year-old and Borussia Dortmund would be too complicated. CHELSEA and Manchester City have asked to be kept informed about River Plate’s Argentine midfielder Claudio Echeverri, 17. MAN UNITED want to clear players out next summer in order to sign Real Madrid and Austria defender David Alaba, 31. EVERTON are interested in signing 23- year-old Marseille and Senegal forward Iliman Ndiaye. City in frustrating form ahead of CWC semis MANCHESTER CITY have often been described as the best team in the world. The penultimate step to officially claiming that title falls on the 25th anniversary of a historic low. Tomorrow morning (2am Malaysian time), they face Urawa Red Diamonds in the semifinal of the Club World Cup. Win then and only Fluminense or Al Ahly stand in their way in Friday’s final. “Years ago we could not imagine to be there and we are there,” said Pep Guardiola. “I’m very pleased and excited to go there to try and win it.” It has been a remarkable rise, albeit one facilitated by about £2 billion (RM12b) of investment from Sheikh Mansour. But now, City have one of the greatest managers in history and a treble only previously achieved by Manchester United in a season when their neighbours were a third-tier club. Now they arrived in Saudi Arabia as favourites to retain both the Premier League and the Champions League. And yet, for a club on the brink of adding a fifth trophy of 2023 and an achievement that would symbolise a time of dominance, at something of a low. Their past shows City that all things are relative. Guardiola’s perfectionism is such that he was in unforgiving mood after they lost a two-goal lead to draw with Crystal Palace. “It’s not bad luck, it’s deserved,” he said. The first time a Guardiola City side had a claim to being the finest team on the planet, they only dropped 14 points all season. City may not be on a permanent slide but for now they are a worse side than in the spring. Perhaps it was inevitable that, after climbing to the summit, after attaining excellence for years, that standards would slip at some stage. But the irony may be that, as Manchester City set about finally acquiring the status of the top team on the planet, they are not playing like it. – The Independent TOUCHLINES Arsenal’s Kai Havertz (left) celebrates scoring his team’s second goal against Brighton. – AFPPIX

All eyes were on Anfield as the bitter rivals went toe-to-toe yesterday, with Jurgen Klopp’s men looking to return to the Premier League summit as the visitors tried to stop the rot. Liverpool had an eye-watering 34 shots across the match and United goalkeeper Andre Onana made eight saves, but the hosts could not find a way through. The tense clash ended scoreless and frustrated skipper Van Dijk said United are “buzzing” to have left with a point. “If you see how we played the game, how we obviously had most of the ball and created some opportunities, I think there was only one team that were trying to win the game,” the centreback told Sky Sports. “Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. So, that’s why it’s frustrating because we want to win every game of course, but especially if we play against a team like them.” United manager Ten Hag brushed aside his fellow Dutchman’s comment, simply saying in response that “it’s his opinion”. The Red Devils boss also gave little away when it came to his view on Diogo Dalot’s sending off for a pair of quickfire bookings for dissent, saying “I will leave the judgement to you”. But Ten Hag was more forthcoming when it came to his side’s reaction to their alarming back-to-back Old Trafford defeats to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich. “We should have taken more of the ball regains three or four passes in where we are capable of and then we could have even hurt the opponent even more,” the Dutchman said. “But all over in the end, you have to conclude, we had the best chances from open play for Rasmus Hojlund and (Alejandro) Garnacho. “I said that after the game in the dressing room I’m very proud of this team. We should do this more often. “For instance, Newcastle was also a tough game, we make one mistake, we switch off and concede the goal. “But when you stay in the game, when you are disciplined in your game plan, finally it opens up and you can take your chances or get two, three, four passes in after the ball regains, get the switches in and then you can really be more dominant in the game.” With regular captain Bruno Fernandes suspended having picked up five yellow cards this season, Ten Hag took the surprise decision to hand the captain’s armband to Scott McTominay. The United boss had few captaincy options, with Harry Maguire ruled out through injury and Marcus Rashford only fit enough to start on the bench. Speaking ahead of the game, Ten Hag said: “I think he (McTominay) is one of the examples of what it means to play for Manchester United, to play with the badge on his heart.” Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Brighton in the early kickoff saw them go top and, while claiming it is too early to talk about the title, boss Jurgen Klopp saw promising signs from his side. “Of course we can improve and now we are in a situation all of a sudden where you are really disappointed when you draw against United,” the Liverpool manager said. “That’s just it’s a bit strange but it’s how it is so it’s all OK, we are in the position we belong and from here we go and we will see. “We have our injuries as well. Nobody speaks about our injuries, but we still have them and it doesn’t help obviously with the amount of games especially. “It will be really tough and my boys for me today looked like they are really ready just to give it a proper try and then we will see what that means exactly. “But for today, if you take the right things out of this game then this was a super important game because the counter press was the best we played with this group.” – The Independent █ BY SIMON PEACH Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez in action with Manchester United’s Diogo Dalot (top) during their English Premier League match at Anfield yesterday. – REUTERSPIX -Story - on page 31 Story on page 28 Sabah beat Kedah 2-0 Confident Tiger
