Keynote Speaker

Dr. Rita Hernandez ‘82
Pace High School Alumni

Dr. Rita B Hernandez is the daughter of David and Ramona
Barrera. The Barrera family moved to Brownsville in 1976
and quickly developed roots in the Brownsville Communi-
ty. Recognizing a need in the community for summer pro-
grams for young girls, her parents spearheaded a team of
local volunteers and leaders to establish Little Miss Kickball
in Brownsville. After graduating from James Pace High
School in 1982, she graduated from Texas A&M University
and returned to Brownsville to teach and coach. Like her
parents, community service is a priority in her life. She is
currently the board chair for United Way of Southern Cam-
eron County.

As an educator she has been recognized for her teaching and leadership efforts. In 1995,
she earned Middle School Teacher of the Year recognition. In 2016, she was awarded the
Outstanding Alumni, for the College of Education and Human Development at Texas
A&M University, College Station, Texas. It is the highest honor the College of Education
and Human Development can bestow upon its former students. The award recognizes
alumni for supporting activities that promote access to education, the establishment and
promotion of diversity and equity, engaging in efforts to promote college access and a
lifetime of dedication to teaching, research and service.

Though recently retired from Brownsville ISD, she remains committed to the students
and families of Brownsville, and to the high school and university from which she gradu-
ated. She currently serves as President of Cameron County Education Initiative (CCEI) a
nonprofit career school that offers debt free career training in the medical and construc-
tion fields.

Dr. Rita currently resides on South Padre Island with her husband Luis and niece Chloe
Quintanilla. They have two children, Dominic and Bianca Hernandez. Dominic graduat-
ed and is employed by Texas A&M University and Bianca is a senior Biomedical Science
major at Texas A&M University.
