OVERVIEW
According to the Malaysian
National Drug Information
System, National Anti – Drug
Agency (AADK), the number of
drug addicts decreased 20.8
per cent to 20,643 persons in
2020 as compared to 26,080
persons in 2019. The majority
of drug addicts was male
(2020:95.3%, 2019:95.7%).
Although the number of drug
addicts in Malaysia was
decreased but it still in a huge
quantity. Therefore, this
statistic show that previous
anti-drug campaign that hold
in Malaysia was not ideal and
not successful.
CATEGORY OF DRUG USE
SITUATIONAL
USE
A person may use a
drug to cope with the
demands of particular
situations such as
responding to peer
group pressure,
overcoming shyness
in a social situation.
EXPERIMENTAL
USE
A person tries a
drug once or twice
out of curiosity but
does not use it
again.
CATEGORY OF DRUG USE
DEPENDENT
USE
Under these
circumstances the
person needs to take
the drug consistently
in order to feel normal
and/or to avoid
uncomfortable
withdrawal symptoms.
RECREATIONAL
/ SOCIAL USE
A person chooses to
use a drug for
enjoyment,
particularly to improve
a mood or for a social
occasion.
CATEGORY OF DRUG USE
INTENSIVE
USE
A person may
intentionally use a
large amount of a
drug over a short
period of time, which
may last for hours,
days or sometimes
weeks.
THERAPEUTIC
USE
A person takes a
drug, such as a
prescribed
pharmaceutical
drug for medical
purposes.

According to a study by Veliz, Boyd and
McCabe in 2016 examined lifetime
nonmedical prescription drug opioid and
heroin use among youths & adults
engaged in sports. Engaging in sporting
activities can teach a person and help
them develop analytical, strategic
thinking, and leadership skills.
Thus, sports can greatly help in the prevention
of drug abuse, among youth and young
people.

CONCLUSION
Any physical sports / exercises
increases abstinence rate while easing
depression symptoms in illicit drugs
and alcohol abusers. When undergoing
treatment for drug addiction, they can
be provided with structured
opportunities for learning about
addictive substances. At the same time,
they can also be taught important life
skills like stress and anger
management, assertiveness,
decision-making, and communication.
In conclusion, sports can equip
individuals with the skills they need to
cope with different life situations and
avoid turning to drugs.
