Pandanus Pygmaeus (Dwarf Screw Pine’) Ground Cover
(Loropetalum chinense), also known as
furcea , giant false agave, is a family of
the Pandanus.Anyway, the pandanus
pygmaeus it is. Some books say that it’s
also known as the screw pine, but I would
say that epithet should be reserved for the
bigger pandanus trees that line many of
Phuket’s beaches; the ones with the weird,
45-degree roots.The pandanus pygmaeus
is one of the more popular landscape
plants in this part of the world.

PANDANUS
PYGMAEUS

Plant Chracteristic

It grows to about 30 centimeters tall, and spreads by sending out runners from
the base of the plant. It’s variegated (has more than one color on its leaves),
with a bright margin of cream or yellow with yellow stripes in the center of the
leaf. There are soft spines along the edges of the leaves, but not soft enough to
avoid scratches if you scrape against them. It’s perfect for a border that you just
can’t be bothered with, as it doesn’t need that much attention and will grow to a
specific height. Put a row of these at the front, about 20cm apart, and you can
put the bigger plants behind, using the pandanus pygmaeus to cover the lower
spindly bits of its neighbor. They’re also quite happy in a rockgarden. The flowers
are a complete letdown, if you can spot them. They’re tiny and petal-less . The
whole point of flowers is to attract insects to help the reproductive process
along.

Araucaria heterophylla (synonym A. Tree
excelsa) is a species of conifer. As its
vernacular name Norfolk Island pine (or
Norfolk pine) implies, the tree is endemic
to Norfolk Island, an external territory of
Australia located in the Pacific Ocean
between New Zealand and New Caledonia.
It is not a true pine, which belong to the
genus Pinus in the family Pinaceae, but
instead is a member of the genus
Araucaria, in the family Araucariaceae,
which also contains the monkey-puzzle
tree.

ARAUCARIA
HETEROPHYLLA

Plant Chracteristic

The tree is slow growing and can reach a height of 50–65 m (160–210 ft),
with straight vertical trunks and symmetrical branches, even in the face of
incessant onshore winds that can contort most other species. From the
straight trunk, it emits its branches almost horizontal or slightly oblique, in
number of five, forming floors; the plane of each floor is a perfect pentagon.
If kept indoors, the tree remains smaller. The gray-brown bark falls off in
fine scales. At the more or less horizontal to sometimes hanging branches,
the branches are four to seven in regular whorls. The young leaves are soft
and awl-shaped, 1–1.5 cm (3⁄8–9⁄16 in) long, about 1 mm (1⁄32 in) thick at
the base on young trees, and incurved, 5–10 mm (3⁄16–13⁄32 in) long .

Dracaena draco, the Canary Islands Shrub
dragon tree or drago, is a subtropical tree
in the genus Dracaena, native to the
Canary Islands, Cape Verde, Madeira,
western Morocco, and is thought to be
introduced in the Azores. Its closest living
relative is the dragon blood tree of
Socotra, Dracaena cinnabari.
It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in
1762 as Asparagus draco. In 1767 he
assigned it to the new genus, Dracaena.

DRACAENA DRACO SESSION 2022/2023 | ISSUE 01

Plant Chracteristic

Dracaena draco is an evergreen long lived tree with up to 15 m (49 ft) or
more in height and a trunk 5 m (16 ft) or more in circumference, starting
with a smooth bark that evolves to a more rough texture as it ages.[8] The
"dragon tree" is a Monocot, with a branching growth pattern currently
placed in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae, subfamily Nolinoidae).[9]
When young it has a single stem. At about 10–15 years of age the stem
stops growing and produces a flower spike with white, lily-like perfumed
flowers, followed by coral berries. Soon a crown of terminal buds appears
and the plant starts branching. Each branch grows for about 10–15 years
and re-branches, so a mature plant has an umbrella-like habit. It grows
slowly, requiring about 10 years to reach 1.2 metres (4 ft) in height, but can
grow much faster.

Loropetalum (Loropetalum chinense), also DECEMBER 2022 | ISSUE 10
known as Chinese fringe-flower, is a
member of the Witchhazel family
(Hamamelidaceae). The genus name,
Loropetalum, is derived from the Greek
words for strap and petal, and refers to the
long, thin petals of its fringe-like blooms.
While native to China, Japan and the
Himalayas, loropetalum is well-adapted to
all regions of South Carolina.

LOROPETALUM

Plant Chracteristic

Loropetalum chinense is an evergreen shrub that generally grows to a
height of 10 to 15 feet with a similar to somewhat smaller width. However, it is
capable of greater height as evidenced by the 100-year-old specimens in
Aiken that are 35 feet tall. It has a loose, slightly open habit and a roughly
rounded to vase-shaped form with a medium-fine texture. The simple, finely
toothed to entire (smooth-edged) leaves are 1- to 2½-inches long and
arranged alternately on somewhat arching branches. The white to off-white
or pink flowers are about one-inch long with petals that are 1/16th-inch wide.
Generally, 3 to 6 blooms are clustered at the tips of shoots as well as in leaf
axils.

Plant Care Tips

PLANT CARE TIPS

1.Feel the Soil to Know How Often to Water
your Plants

For potted plants at home, you may be unsure of how often water
them. For most plants, the golden rule is to see if the first inch or
so of soil is dry.if dry, this is an indication that the plants needs
water. If there are leaves that have shriveled or are
dry/discolored, the plant might need a little extra water than a
regular routine.

2.It's Better to Underwater Your Plants Than
Outwater Them

.A plant can recover faster from being deprived of water than
one given excess water. To rescue an overwatered plant, you
may need to repot the plant and remove any unhealthy roots and
overwatered soil before moving the plant into a new pot.

3.Skip Fertilization for Houseplants if You're
Unsure

Houseplants don’t require fertilization unless they are struggling
to grow. If you’re unsure of how much or what type of
fertilization to use when planting, it’s better to skip that step
altogether. Too much fertilization may actually end up killing
your plant rather than helping it.

4.Houseplants love Stability

We recommend scoping out where you’ll put your plant in your
house before picking one out. Plants thrive once they are used
to their surroundings and finding a spot with the right amount of
light is important. Temperature is also important. Fluctuating
temperatures will shock your plant and therefore lead to the
plant not being able to develop and maybe even die. Most plants
prefer temperatures of 65º–75ºF.

Pro Flower 8 BRILLIANT & EASY

Plant Care Tips

PLANT CARE TIPS

5.Feel Smaller Plants Are the Fastest Growing
plants

When buying your chosen plant, it’s always better to purchase a
smaller plant over a larger one. This is because a smaller plant
will be able to get more established in its home and have a
larger ratio of roots to top growth. A larger plant will not
continue to grow until its roots catch up with the top growth.

6.Place Low Light Plants in Bathrooms

Low light plants still need light, but a small bathroom window
with no direct light shining through is the perfect light source
for these types of plants. The shower will be your plant’s main
source of water as well, but not directly from the hose. The
humidity produced when showering will water your plants that
do not require too much watering. You may want to peek every
once in a while to see if your plant needs an extra drink. This
can easily be done by checking the soil, see the first tip..

7.Water Deeply,Rather Than Lightly and
Frequently

When you water lightly and frequently, only the top roots are
able to drink the water, and your plant may not receive the
fuel it needs to survive. Watering deeply, which entails
watering your plants heavily with water, allows for all the
roots to grab a drink. To avoid overwatering, slowly water
your plant and watch for when the water is not draining
through the soil anymore. Once you notice this, stop there.

8.Prune Your Plants

LGetting rid of old-growth on your plants will help your plants
grow again. This is kind of like how trimming the dead ends of
your hair will help your hair grow again. After winter is when
you’ll see some of the tips or leaves of your plant dying, so a
simple plant haircut will do!

SUMMARY summer 2022

Alhamdulillah, thanks to the Allah for the
abundant grace and blessing of energy bestowed
on me, I was also able to complete this magazine
successfully.
Earth is that place to live where everyone can live
adorably. Life is existing on this planet earth
because of astonishing sun, moon, and a vast
number of oceans for water. Moreover, if you look
around, enormous plants, animals, and flowers
make this sphere an attractive place to live.
Our eco-system is composed of two important
components that are plant and animal life. Other
than this, many forms of habitat exist here but it is
very difficult to see with naked eyes.
