REINHOLD MESSNER: Find more books by
MY LIFE AT THE LIMIT Reinhold Messner on

INTERVIEWED BY THOMAS HÜETLIN pages 11 and 42
TRANSLATED BY TIM CARRUTHERS

AVAIL AB L E IN O CTO BE R

“Messner is not only the greatest high-altitude
mountaineer the world has ever known; he is
probably the best it will ever know.” ——TIME

• Reveals the long view from an icon who, with age, has added wisdom to his
list of accomplishments

• Messner climbing firsts: the world’s fourteen peaks taller than 8000 meters;
Everest solo; Everest without supplemental oxygen

• Author of more than 60 books

Reinhold Messner: My Life at the Limit, the newest book by the famed mountaineer, is
a conversation between Messner and interviewer Thomas Hüetlin, an award-winning
German journalist. It reveals a more thoughtful and conversational Messner than one
finds in his previous books, with the “talk” between Messner and Hüetlin covering not only
the highlights of Messner’s climbing career, but also his treks across Tibet, the Gobi, and
Antarctica; his five-year-stint as a member of the European Parliament; his encounter
with and study of the yeti; his thoughts on traditional male/female roles; and much more.
Readers learn about Messner’s childhood, his thoughts about eating ice cream with girls
(against), politics (mostly liberal), and his technique for killing chickens (sharp scissors).

Messner is known as one of history’s greatest Himalayan mountaineers, a man who pushed
back the frontiers of the possible for a whole generation of climbers. While the interest in
My Life at the Limit is that it exposes much more of the man than his climbing career, that
career is still utterly remarkable——and Mountaineers Books is proud to present this book,
which is core to our mission, to audiences across North America.

Reinhold Messner, born in 1944 in Villnöss, South Tyrol, is the most famous mountaineer
and adventurer of our time. He has accomplished roughly one hundred first ascents,
climbed all fourteen eight-thousanders, and crossed Antarctica, Greenland, Tibet, and two
deserts on foot. After serving a term as a member of the European Parliament, he now
devotes much of his time and energy to his Messner Mountain Museum (MMM) project
and to his Messner Mountain Foundation (MMF), which aims to support mountain people
worldwide. Visit his website: reinhold-messner.de.

Interviewer Thomas Hüetlin is an award-winning correspondent for the German magazine
Der Spiegel and divides his time between Berlin and London. Translator Tim Carruthers
has climbed extensively in Europe, the United States, and South America and has translated
works by Hermann Buhl, Heinrich Harrer, Anderl Heckmair, and Reinhold Messner.

climbing texts on
Best-selling climbing instructional, now fully updated, includes
new, vetted alternatives to traditional techniques page 28:

• Approximately 35 new techniques, safety considerations, and subjects
• National Outdoor Book Award winner in first edition
• First edition of this popular title has sold 50,000 copies

Thousands of rock climbers have learned the sport using Craig Luebben’s seminal and bestselling
text, Rock Climbing: Mastering Basic Skills. Now Craig’s friend and fellow climber Topher Donahue
brings the content up to current standards and includes technological advances, while preserving
Craig’s comprehensive approach. An award-winning climber in his own right, Topher uses his writing
and photography skills to simplify the complex world of modern climbing technique and reveals the
thought process behind safe and practical climbing methods.

This second edition includes European climbing techniques that offer alternatives to those
traditionally taught in North America. Topher has also incorporated new lessons derived from
accidents due, in part, to the increased popularity of climbing. Also found in this edition:

• Over 10,000 more words and 125 more photos
• Three never-before-published techniques: Adjustable Hitch, High Friction Tubes, and Bight Method
• Detailed technical updates throughout
• New distinction between “anchor” (a group of placements, pieces, or bolts used at the end of a

pitch or for top rope or rappel setup) and “placement” or “piece” (individual cams, nuts, etc., used
in groups to make an anchor or used individually as protection on a pitch)

Topher Donahue began his mountaineering apprenticeship in the Rockies under the tutelage of his
mountain guide father. By the time he was 14, he was guiding rock and alpine routes as one of the
youngest climbing guides in history. An accomplished adventure photographer and writer, Topher
is also the author of Bugaboo Dreams. He lives in Nederland,
Colorado. Visit his website at topherdonahue.com.

Prior to his death in 2009, Craig Luebben was a senior
contributing editor for Climbing magazine, the author of several
books on climbing, and a mechanical engineer who designed
climbing gear. He is survived by his wife, Silvia, and daughter,
Giulia. Silvia was instrumental in securing Topher Donahue to
update her husband’s popular book.

THE ADVENTURE GAP

CHANGING THE FACE OF THE OUTDOORS

JAMES EDWARD MILLS
FOREWORD BY SHELTON JOHNSON

AVAIL AB L E IN O CTO BE R

A story for our times, inspiring all Americans to embrace
their natural birthright in the great outdoors

• Chronicles the first all-African American summit attempt on Denali, the highest point in North America
• Part adventure story, part history, and part argument for the importance of inspiring future generations

to value nature

The nation’s wild places——from national and state parks to national forests, preserves, and wilderness areas——belong to
all Americans. But not all of us use these resources equally. Minority populations are much less likely to seek recreation,
adventure, and solace in our wilderness spaces. It’s a difference that African American author James Mills addresses in his
new book, The Adventure Gap: Changing the Face of the Outdoors.
Bridging the so-called “adventure gap” requires role models who can inspire the uninitiated to experience and enjoy wild
places. Once new visitors are there, a love affair often follows. This is important because as our country grows increasingly
multicultural, our natural legacy will need the devotion of people of all races and ethnicities to steward its care.
In 2013, the first all-African American team of climbers, sponsored by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS),
challenged themselves on North America’s highest point, the dangerous and forbidding Denali, in Alaska. Mills uses
Expedition Denali and its team members’ adventures as a jumping-off point to explore how minority populations view
their place in wild environments and to share the stories of those who have already achieved significant accomplishments
in outdoor adventures——from Mathew Henson, a Black
explorer who stood with Peary at the North Pole, to Kai
Lightner, a teenage sport climber currently winning national
competitions. The goal of the expedition, and now the book,
is to inspire minority communities to look outdoors for
experiences that will enrich their lives, and to encourage them
toward greater environmental stewardship.
James Edward Mills is a journalist and media producer. He
specializes in stories about outdoor recreation, environmental
conservation, acts of charitable giving, and practices of
sustainable living. He has worked in the outdoor industry since
1989 as a guide, outfitter, independent sales representative,

How to design a beautiful, wildlife-friendly garden
using Northwest native plants——with 100 select plants
individually profiled

• 175 full-color photos and 4 easy-to-use design plans
• Low-maintenance and user-friendly advice for sustainable gardening
• Proceeds from sales benefit the Xerces Society

For many people, the most immediate impact they can have on the environment is right in their own backyard. Imagine: a
little slice of wilderness at home that reflects the natural world, where native plants welcome wildlife from bumblebees to
thrushes, and where a mini-ecosystem not only provides protection and wildlife corridors, but enhances and beautifies your
yard and neighborhood!

Many gardeners and conservationists in the Northwest want to create a healthy green space, but lack the time to read
through lengthy books that catalog hundreds of plants. Nor can they afford to hire a landscape designer to tell them which
plants to choose. With expert knowledge from professional landscape designer Eileen M. Stark, Real Gardens Grow Natives
covers these issues with clear, concise advice including:

“It is thanks to Simone that interest in this highly
challenging type of alpinism [winter climbing] has been
renewed.” ——Reinhold Messner

• Adventure memoir from a renowned winter climber at the top of his game
• Moro reflects on some of his most significant climbs
• A bestseller in Italy, this is the first English-language edition of Moro’s story

Simone Moro is a celebrated Italian alpinist who specializes in winter climbing: He holds
the record for first winter ascents of 8000-meter peaks——Shisha Pangma, Makalu, and
Gasherbrum II. A passionate climber, he is also an accomplished helicopter pilot and
founder of a helicopter rescue program in Nepal.

The Call of the Ice was written during Moro’s dramatic winter attempt on Nanga Parbat in
2012——his twelfth attempt on that mountain——during weather delays and other breaks in the
climb. Moro reflects on past climbs and partners, including the death of his longtime friend
and climbing partner, Anatoli Boukreev, on Annapurna, his mourning when Boukreev died,
and his subsequent recovery; Denis Urubko and the nature of climbing partnerships; two
attempts on Shisha Pangma; Broad Peak; Makalu; and Gasherbrum II, which he, Urubko,
and Cory Richards completed in February 2011 despite near-tragic moments when they
miraculously escaped after being swept away by an avalanche. Many of Moro’s climbs do
not result in a summit and he explains why his interest lies in the attempt itself. In addition
to these reflections, we relive in real-time his attempt on Nanga Parbat, which he and
Urubko had to abandon after 51 days and 6600 meters!

“I will go in winter. Again. Yes in winter. Just because it’s my dream. Just because
exploration never ends.” –Simone Moro

Simone Moro, born in Bergamo in 1967, has been the coach of the Italian national climbing
team, an avid sky diver and dry-tooler, and deeply involved in search-and-rescue in Nepal.
In 2001 he received the ‘Medaglia d’Oro al Valore Civile’ (an Italian award given for great
achievements or bravery). He is the author of three books. Discover more about Simone at

NEW LEGENDS & LORE

FREE SPIRIT

A CLIMBER’S LIFE, REVISED EDITION

REINHOLD MESSNER, TRANSLATED BY TIM CARRUTHERS

AVAIL AB L E IN SE PTE MBE R

“Free Spirit condenses a lifetime of climbing achievement
into 288 pages of nerve-wracking reading . . .” ——Mark Twight

• A mountaineering classic re-released in the Legends and Lore series
• Two new chapters

In Free Spirit Reinhold Messner describes the forces and events that have shaped him as a climber as famous for his discipline
as for his innovative spirit. Messner evolved his philosophy of the single free-climbing line with its uncompromising purity
of style in the Dolomites and, as equipment and technique developed, he was in the forefront of the transference of fast
lightweight alpine methods to the great ranges. Here, he takes us from the days of his first climb (at the age of five) with his
father to his brother’s tragic death on Nanga Parbat in 1970 to his later move away from the overcrowded Alps and 8000-meter
peaks. He sought fulfillment, instead, in new challenges in lesser known parts of the world, such as crossing the expanse of
Antarctica. Free Spirit is an exciting account of the career of a mountain pioneer.

LUREE MILLER, NEW FOREWORD BY ARLENE BLUM

AVAIL AB L E IN O CTO BE R

“. . . awe-inspiring reading.” ——Library Journal

In the late 1800s, when women were bound by cumbersome clothing and strict Victorian
scruples, a small band of astonishing women explorers burst forth to claim the adventurous life.
Plowing their way up the Himalaya and Karakoram or trekking for months through tropical lowlands, these five women
(three British, one American, and one French) conducted an unprecedented exploration of Tibet:

Nina Mazuchelli, the first Western woman to see Everest, organized a small expedition from Darjeeling to explore the Eastern
Himalaya. Isabella Bird Bishop, bedridden while at home, was always robust on her far-flung, international adventures and
wrote nine books chronicling her travels, which brought her to Hawaii, the Rocky Mountains, and across Asia and into Tibet.
Alexandra David-Neel at 56 trekked for eight months and more than 2,000 miles from China to Lhasa disguised as a Tibetan
beggar. Fanny Bullock Workman, an avowed suffragist, climbed to 21,000 feet in the Karakorum in 1899 and posed with a
newspaper whose banner proclaimed, ‘Votes for Women.’ Annie Taylor was a Christian missionary who traveled in Tibetan
garb to bring the word of God to the forbidden land of Tibet.

The late Luree Miller was a writer, scholar, and world traveler whose endeavors ranged from driving huge freight trucks
through the unpaved roads of the Alaskan wilderness, to co-founding the International School in Bombay. She passed away on
July 6, 1996, at the age of 70.

WILLIAM DIETRICH The NorTh CasCades
WITH CRAIG ROMANO AND CHRISTIAN MARTIN
FOREWORD BY RICHARD LOUV Finding Beauty and Renewal in the wild neaRBy

AVAIL AB L E IN O CTO BE R

Celebrate a national treasure with this lush William Dietrich
and intimate look at the North Cascades

• Experience the region through the words and images of a wide variety of writers, photographers,
residents, and visitors

• Developed with more than a dozen outdoors-related organizations who plan to integrate the book
into their outreach plans

• The book will be expanded into exhibits, events, and related media in honor of 2014’s 50th
anniversary of the landmark Wilderness Act.

• 2014 is also the 50th anniversary of the original North Cascades photo book by The Mountaineers
that helped inspire the creation of North Cascades National Park

Washington’s North Cascades hold some of the most magnificent mountains, lowland old growth forests, and pristine
rivers on the planet. Some of these features are safely contained within national park boundaries or federally
designated wilderness areas, but few people realize how many acres remain unprotected. With a growing regional
population leading to tremendous development pressures, The North Cascades draws attention to the many reasons
the integrity of this ecosystem must remain intact. It examines the value of the area through a broad spectrum of
views——conservation, natural history, ecosystem services, sustainable rural communities, and recreation.

Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Dietrich leads us on a hike through the region, exploring the rich history and
challenges facing this rugged habitat just hours away from the metropolitan bustle of Seattle. The North Cascades
Institute’s Christian Martin profiles people and communities within the area; poet Gary Snyder shares musings from
his time spent as a fire lookout in the region; guidebook author Craig Romano provides ideas on where to visit and
what to do, from day hikes to more ambitious backcountry travel; and Richard Louv examines the importance of
preserving our local wilderness areas for generations to come. Twenty photographers including Art Wolfe, Ethan
Welty, Benj Drummond, Paul Bannick, Amy Gulick, Steven Gnam, and more, bring the North Cascades region, and the
book, to stunning visual life.

William Dietrich is the New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer-winning journalist of fifteen books, including
award-winning Northwest environmental texts. His popular historical thrillers have been translated into thirty-one
languages. He lives in Bellingham, Washington, with a daily view of the North Cascades.

I pondered the accident that had killed Craig, an ice Photo by Daniel Gambino.
wall collapse in the North Cascades. It was the kind of
accident that could happen while walking under the icy
eaves of a house or driving on a mountain road during
avalanche season. There is one big difference: our culture
accepts the risk of walking around the yard and driving on
wintery roads.

A couple of weeks later I told Sylvia I would like to
take on the new edition. My inspiration was partly his
family’s steadfast belief in the beauty of climbing; partly
the friendship that had taken Craig and me up the first
one-day winter ascent of the Diamond and numerous first
ascents in the Utah desert, as well as to China and Canada
on ice-climbing adventures; and partly a shared passion
for showing others how fun it is to climb safe and strong.

I’ve been asked numerous times how I could continue
climbing after losing a friend to the sport, and I’m sure
people wonder how Craig’s wife and daughter continue to
climb after losing Craig. It’s a good question——one I don’t
entirely know how to answer——but the best I can do to
explain is say that life is risky. Some people avoid nearly
all risk. Some of them have high blood pressure. Some
have strained relationships with their risk-taking children.
