A TERRIBLE DAY

I have never really had a terrible day before
except for that day when I was forced to say
goodbye to my beloved pet cats. It happened last
Tuesday. It was an ordinary day at school and when
I reached home after school, guess what? I was
struck by the death of my pet cat. It was
devastating that it made me cry a river. It died due
to sickness and old age.

Later that day, my other cat ran away because
someone forgot to lock the cage door properly. It
was frustrating. My family and I searched
everywhere for a few hours, but we could not find
it. Two of my favourite cats left us that day. It was
painful but my family members comforted me well.

The house feels empty without them sprawled
and brawled on the kitchen floor, narrowing their
lovely eyes in the hope that they will be rewarded
with a bowl of Whiskas. Now that they are gone, I
came to realize the meaning of cherishing every
moment with my pets because we will never know
when they will leave us.

A TERRIBLE DAY
WRITTEN BY: VIVIANA SURA ANAK GALEH
(6 KNIGHTLY)

Last Saturday, my family and I went to
our village in Selangau. We went on a
day trip. We went there in my dad’s
car. It was already evening time when
we decided to go back to Bintulu. We
started our journey at 6:00 p.m. from
Selangau.

Suddenly, the car stopped in the
middle of the road somewhere in the
Sungai Mas area. A horn blared
behind us. My dad quickly flipped on
the emergency lights and stepped out
of the car to get help from the passing
vehicles. The occupants of the other
vehicles only swerved around us with
angry horns.

I pitied my dad because he had tried
several times to start the engine up
but there was no sign of life. Our car
broke down and we were unable to
get out of there on our own.

It became dark and we were scared
and uncomfortable. My dad tried to
dial several numbers of his friends to
find mechanics who were willing to
help at this hour. Finally, he was able
to get in touch with a mechanic from
Nyigu. The mechanic called a towing
truck to get our car to his workshop.
From that day onwards, our family,
especially my dad, always checks the
condition of our car before driving
anywhere.

There are many skills we take for

granted, but the truth is, we had to

learn these skills, through hard work

and perseverance.

An example of this, of course, is
telling time on an analog clock!

Of course, it’s easier these days with

digital clocks, but children still need to

learn to read analog versions too. I picked

this as one of my language awareness

activities for Year 3 Module 1. I decided

to teach my pupils to read an analog
clock. First, we made the clock using a

template taken from:

www.shiningbrains.com

To make it fun for them, I asked them

to take turns setting and answering

what time it is. I’ve seen how they

grappled with sentences. That’s why I

provided them with sentence patterns

to work with. They had tried their

best to use the language and I
applauded their effort the entire

1 – hour lesson.
