1 Princess Anne Living | November/December 2016
Message from the President
It has been a busy fall at the Princess Anne Country Club. We celebrated our Club’s 100th Anniversary through
numerous wonderful events and completed our centennial book ‘Reflections of the First One Hundred Years’
which was well received by our Membership. Thanks again to all of you who made those such a success.
We now shift gears into the holiday season. Your PACC Operations Team has a full schedule of festive events
planned to help our membership celebrate this special time of year. Please consider your Club for any private
holiday parties. Also, as we complete one fiscal year and enter a new one, our 2016 Annual Reports are being
prepared to deliver to your mailboxes.
As the year draws to a close, I would like to thank the dedicated Directors whose terms have expired. Stock Watson, Chris Fanney,
Tom Hyman and Troy Heselius have faithfully served our Club. Thank you for your devoted service. At the same time, I am excited
to receive the Nominating Committees’ slate of proposed new Directors. Thank you all for accepting the prospect of serving your
Club. The vote will take place on November 4th at our Annual Meeting.
The holiday season is a special time of year around PACC. The Thanksgiving Brunch and Traditional Christmas events are traditions
not to be missed. I would like to wish all of our Princess Anne family a joyous holiday season and a happy, prosperous New Year!
Happy Holidays,
Jay Standing
Up-to-Date from the General Manager
PGA Head Professional & Executive Chef Search Update | As this column is being
scribed in early October, our PGA Head Golf Professional Search Committee chaired by Chris Fanney with
Jeanne Beck, John Gibson, Joe Taylor, Jon Thornton, John Watson and Susan Wight, are about to conduct
interviews and we hope to announce our new PGA Head Golf Professional before you receive this issue. If you are
not receiving your Princess Anne bi-weekly e-mail broadcasts packed with the freshest up-to-date information,
please contact our Director of Marketing & Communications Kristen Bunting at [email protected]
or (757) 440-3111.
Also in-progress as I compose this column, is a national pursuit for our club’s Executive Chef position. House Committee
Chairman Tom Hyman, along with incoming Chair Brad Foster, have appointed a special Tasting Committee to work with an
Executive Chef Search Consultant on a national search. Again, we hope to announce our New Executive Chef before you receive
this issue. I would be remiss if I did not take a moment here to recognize and thank Executive Chef Michael Jacinto who has
faithfully served the Princess Anne Family for over sixteen years, first as our Sous Chef in the late nineties and then returning in
2005 to serve as our Executive Chef. I will forever be grateful for Chef Michael’s loyalty and friendship.
I too, like President Standing notes above, very much wish to thank outgoing Directors Chris Fanney, Troy Heselius, Tom Hyman,
and Stock Watson. Each of these gentlemen have served the Princess Anne faithfully as committee chairs and provided valuable
leadership that has truly made a difference. If you have a chance to personally reach out to these devoted volunteers I encourage you
to extend congratulations and appreciation
Finally, as we wind down this Centennial year, I wish to take a moment to thank the entire Princess Anne Family of Membership
and Operations Team. It is truly a privilege to be part of a Team that remains committed to our mission and looks forward to
providing Personal Attention that is Consistently Captivating. We are inspired by the devotion and commitment of The Princess
Anne Membership and thank each of you for your ongoing support. Have a truly joyous and safe holiday season!
See you at the Princess Anne!

Breakers welcomes Chef Michael Griffith
Breakers has a new addition! Chef Michael Griffith has joined the Princess
Anne Team to take the Breakers dining experience to a higher and more
innovative level. His culinary skills are already creating a buzz and we are
excited for future tasting events and dinners that will provide enhanced
service and additional offerings to our members.
Born in San Diego, Michael then followed his military family around various
parts of the world. It was when stationed in Panama that Latin and ethnic
food peaked his interest. After the family was stationed at Little Creek,
Chef Michael attended Johnson and Wales and pursued his associates and
bachelors degrees. When the campus closed in 2006, he moved to Colorado

The Golden Rules of Golf Will Set You Free.

Regarding your question #1: since you refer to the other
21 Princess Anne Living | November/December 2016
“What is the ruling on an opponent running over your ball in match play?”
To summarize some key points:
1. In match play Rule 18-3 covers an opponent moving the other
player’s ball. If this occurred during search, there is no penalty to
the opponent. In all other cases the opponent incurs a one stroke
penalty.
2. When a ball at rest and in play has been moved by the player, the
opponent in match play or the fellow competitor in stroke play,
the ball must be replaced. Rule 20-3 covers the procedure for
replacing a ball.
3. In match play if there is doubt or a dispute between the players,
the player may make a claim. There is a deadline for doing this.
The claim must be made before any player tees off on the next
hole or, if it’s the last hole, before all players leave the putting
green. A claim must include two elements: first, the facts as in
“you moved my ball, I think that is a penalty”; second, it must be
clear that the player wants a ruling from the Committee before
accepting the result of the hole.
Question 2:
In the same tournament, I was off the green on number 5 and was chipping up to a back pen placement. My opponent
left her wedges off the green at the back of the hole. I did not really notice them. I chipped and my ball went over the
green and hit her clubs. Is there any penalty?
Answer 2:
Question #1 involved a ball at rest and in play being moved, covered by Rule 18. Question #2 involves a ball in
motion (after a stroke) that has been deflected or stopped; this is covered by Rule 19. Since this happened in the same
tournament, we assume match play rules apply. Your ball was accidentally deflected by your opponent’s equipment; Rule
19-3 specifically deals with this situation. There is no penalty to either player; however, you have the option of canceling
the stroke and playing another ball as nearly as possible from the same spot from which you played the original stroke. If
you decide to do this, you must do so before another stroke is played by any player in your match.
In stroke play there is no penalty for striking a fellow-competitor’s equipment and the ball is played from where it comes
to rest. The penalty for striking your or your partner’s equipment is the same in either stroke or match play: one stroke
and play the ball as it lies.
Until next time, keep the questions coming!

Tee It High and Let It Fly
While putting may be the most important shot in golf, driving is not far behind. If a player
can get off of the tee accurately with good distance, it sure makes the game a lot easier. As
an instructor, one of the most common comments I hear from my students is “I want to hit
my drive farther!”Well, don’t we all! Many players I work with hit their 8 and 9 irons great,
but struggle with their driver. That is because they hit down on the ball. A downward angle Matt Liebler, PGA
of attack is great for hitting irons when the ball is on the ground. It actually is what makes
the ball go in the air. When the ball is on the tee (drive) however, it is imperative that we hit up on the ball. This is important
for two reasons: it causes the path of the club to come in square (accuracy) and it reduces spin (distance). Below are some
basic tips to help you hit up on the ball, which will maximize accuracy and maybe help you pick up a few yards.
Tee Height
The setup with the driver is the most important factor to hitting up on the ball. The first thing the player should do is tee the
ball high. This will help you visualize hitting the bottom half of the ball. Most players who hit down on the ball tee it too low.
Ball Position
Next, the player should play the ball forward in the stance. Be careful with this one. A ball that is played too far in the stance
can also cause a player to hit too far down on the ball. The farther the ball is in the stance, the more open a player’s shoulders
tend to get. Opening the shoulders causes a player to swing left and hit down on the ball. I tell my students to play the ball off
of the inside of their front foot.
Spine Tilt
When addressing the ball, the player should take a stance that is wider than normal. I also like for the golfer to have a slightly
closed stance. This means that the trail foot is slightly behind the lead foot. Once in that position I want the player to tilt so
that the lead shoulder is higher than the trail shoulder and 60 % of the player’s weight is on the trail leg. This will give the
sensation of setting up behind the ball.
Swing
Once the player is in the proper setup position it’s go time! The driver can be
swung on a flatter plane so I tell most players to get a big shoulder turn when
taking the club back. This is a great power source for hitting the golf ball and it
allows the player to swing the club a little flatter. The downswing should have the
player feel as though they are staying tilted behind the ball while swinging the
club up and out. If the player is in a closed stance they will have the sensation of
swinging along their foot line.
Drill
Place an alignment stick in front of you pointing 10 yards right of your target. Get
into the above mentioned set up positions.Try to feel yourself swinging down that
alignment stick on the downswing.
If done correctly, you will find yourself squaring up the club path which will
result in straighter shots. You will also start hitting the ball farther because you
will start bringing down the rate in which the ball is spinning. Remember, tee it
high and let it fly!

Tennis Talk
I couldn’t be more thrilled at how this year has gone and the successes we’ve had. We found out very quickly how
much everybody loved our new IPTL events of which we performed a trial run at each level, before combining
them and including our “Legends,” seniors 60 years of age and up. It’s been a blast bringing all the different groups
together on our courts for an event that promotes fun competition in a social setting. We brought home the Fun
Cup for the very first time in it’s eleven-year history as well as the Tidewater Cup which we’d won before but not
for quite some time. We had a waiting list for the first time in the CHKD Winter Open Mixed tournament which
ended up with full sixteen draws and no byes in every division. The Member/Guest drew 42 teams versus last year’s
28. We started a first-ever Wednesday Night League for men at the 4.5 level and up, which drew 60 players at
three different venues each week. Two local high schools with several of our kids on their tennis teams won state
championships, Norfolk Academy girls and Cox girls, who have now won two of the last three years, Norfolk
Academy winning for the very first time.

Cardinal Sin - Getting Passed
Down the Middle
Never let a ball go down the middle
of the court without someone
putting a racquet on it. Anytime
the ball is hit wide, I instruct my
teams that both tennis players must
shift like windshield wipers in the
direction of the ball with the ball
side player covering the alley while
their partner overplays the middle.
Do not let them have an open shot down the middle. I’m talking about understanding your role as either
gatekeeper of the alley OR gatekeeper of the middle, not both. This means nothing gets through there on your
watch! If the opponents win the point with a great crosscourt angled shot fine, but my teams are in big trouble
if the winning shot went down the middle uncontested. Conversely, if you’re stuck at the baseline versus two net
players, keep pounding away at the middle since it’s the low part of the net and test out their ability to defend the
middle.

OR gatekeeper of the middle, not both.”

2016 Senior Tidewater Cup
It was a bit of a hot one for our
seniors when we hosted the 7th
Annual Senior Tidewater Cup. This
doubles only event for 60 and over
men rated 3.0-4.0 and boasts teams
from PACC, Elizabeth Manor,
VBTCC and Norfolk Yacht. This
event has been dominated by VB
Racquet Club, who has won it five
out of the past six years. Elizabeth Above is our PACC team picture. Here’s who played: David Holland, Jerry Clarke, David Beatty, Jim-
Manor came on strong from the get my Sellers, Larry Parker, Michael Blachman, Rod Buffington, Rickey Jacobson, George Birdsong, Colin
Hamilton, Beau Walker, Ed Putney, Steve Burwell, Robert Mills, Mickey Walker, Mike Robinson,

matches before finally losing only one
by default due to heat exhaustion. That was a landslide victory and the first ever for EMCC. We managed to win two out
of the five morning matches and three of the afternoon bringing our total to five, which was good for third place. Ahead
of us by one match win was VBTCC who scored six and took second place. Norfolk Yacht failed to win any for the day.
All in all we were proud of our guys who braved the heat and fought hard. Great job guys and there’s always next year!
2016 Spindle Cup
It came down to the wire once again
for Spindle Cup 2016. Our PACC
ladies were in a bid for their fifth
consecutive title and feeling confident
since they had just won Sectionals at
the 4.0 level of USTA league. After day
one, we had won three out of the four
singles matches, but only two of the (Left to right): Marie Clunan, Michelle Fox, Beth Foster, Meridith Brady, Molly Hobbs,
doubles, putting us behind Farmington Sheridan Conley, Diane Stein, Vinita Folck, Donna Salasky and Leslie Cutchins
by two points but ahead of CCV and
Norfolk Yacht. Our three singles wins
were courtesy of Marie Clunan playing in the number two spot, Vinita Folck at the number three spot and first time
Spindler, Michelle Fox who, despite being five months pregnant, was undaunted, battling out in the heat for three hours
before getting the win for us! Diane Stein and Meridith Brady got a win for us at number one doubles as did Vinita
Folck and Leslie Cutchins. On day two, we again got three singles wins from Leslie Cutchins at number one, Vinita
Folck at number three who along with Michelle Fox at number four again went the distance in their respective matches
taking another three hours in getting their wins. Then, despite winning three out of the four doubles by Diane Stein and
Meridith Brady at one, Beth Foster and Donna Salasky at two, Molly Hobbs and Marie Clunan who was subbing in for
an injured Sheridan Conley at number three, we still fell short of Farmington’s score by a mere point in the end.
Here were the final point totals for each club: 1st) Farmington – 12 2nd) PACC – 11 3rd) CCV – 7 4th) NYCC – 2
All in all it was a wonderful weekend of tennis with some terrific battles. In the end we fell just shy of our goal of win-
ning five straight. Our girls gave it everything they had and should be very proud of themselves for what they have
achieved in winning it that may times and finishing second this year.

Select Automotive USTA L4 Junior Tournament
We had another great turnout for the 11th straight year for the Select Automotive/Expedia CruiseShipCenters L5 USTA
Junior Singles tournament, with over sixty kids from all over the state participating. We also showed that we have some
of the best players in the area, as four brought home winners’ trophies with several others taking runner-up or consolation
hardware. One of our tennis families, the Hobbs’ , with four kids participating, scored wins in two of the divisions, a semi-
final and a final in the other two. Well done boys and girls! Here are our PACC standouts:
Boys’ 12’s semi finalist - Alex Ortiz Girls’ 14’s finalist – Catherine Hobbs
Boys’ 12’s winner – Joseph Hobbs Girls’ 16’s semi finalist – Virginia Hobbs
Boys’ 14’s winner – Charles Hobbs(played a division up) Girls’ 16’s Consolation winner – Fiona Clunan
Boys’ 16’s semi finalist – Bryon Toner Girls’ 18’s winner – Zoe Fraser
Boys’ 16’s Consolation winner – Ashton Legum
Boys’ 18’s winner – Ryan Charles
PACC Ladies 4.0 Team Goes to Nationals
It was a team that comes along once in a lifetime.
A team with all the right players, a team made up
strictly of members and a team made up most-
ly of doubles pairings that have a long history
of playing together either in the Spindle Cup
competition or in other forms of play. A team that
will no longer be a team as they will now be forced
to disband per the usta regulations that state that
if a team makes it all the way to Nationals they
have to be broken up the following year so it gives Pictured (left to right): Beth Foster, Meg Haynsworth, Elissa White, Vinita Folck,
others a chance and doesn’t allow for a dynasty Meridith Brady, Sheridan Conley, Marie Clunan, Diane Stein, Joan Wagner,
to occur. This team was a 4.0 ladies USTA team Donna Salasky and Leslie Cutchins. Not Pictured: Michelle Fox, Molly Hobbs,
from PACC captained by Sheridan Conley that
went undefeated in the local Beach League and Colleen Benkovitz, Amanda McCammon, Peggy Jones and Rachel Feigenbaum.
Districts before going all the way to Sectionals where they saved match points in 3rd set tie breakers to beat some of the best
teams in the state on their way to Palm Springs, CA for the National Championship. Unfortunately they played the best
team in the country in their very first match which they lost but then proceeded to beat the other 2 teams in the bracket fin-
ishing up 2nd. The team they lost to of course went on to win the National Championship so all things considered an amaz-
ing experience and effort. Congratulations ladies, we are so proud and way to represent!
Centennial IPTL Event
We had our Centennial International Premier
Tennis League Event on September 23rd outside
during our “Grillin’ and Chillin’” with live enter-
tainment from “Breaking Brad”. The Cupcakes
and Cocktails event was also going on at Breakers
Boulevard to celebrate our 100 year anniversary so that’s how we came up with our team names. Martin & Mary’s Cupcakes
battled Andy & Nathan’s Cocktails, but it was the Cocktails that came out victorious in the end. The final game score after 3
rounds of match play was 115 total games won by the Cocktails to 76 total games won by the Cupcakes! A huge thank you to
all who participated and helped make this a great event!

Fitness Success Story | Mr. Thomas Tuite
We are so proud of Mr. Tuite’s accomplishment and his consistent effort. Keep up the
great work, Mr. Tuite!
What prompted you to begin a fitness program?
I felt like it was time to improve my bad eating habits and lose some weight.
In early January 2016, my primary care physician informed me that I was
prediabetic, but that it could be avoided with a good healthy diet and exercise. It
was then and there that I decided “I can do this!”
What methods did you use to achieve your goal?
I decided to get busy and serious about this new goal. From the eating
standpoint, I started listening to my wife on what good and healthy foods to eat
and what to avoid. I gave up processed food, fried food, fast food, sugar, and eating lunch quite often at Nick’s. That was
the hardest part to give up! (It’s now a very nice reward!) Then I revived my routine from way back in my 20s. I started
going to the fitness center 3-5 times per week, doing a combination of cardio, free-weights and machines.
What physical results have you seen?
I’ve seen some radical improvements over the past nine months. I’ve lost 28 pounds (two pant sizes!), developed much
more stamina from the cardio exercise, and put on some upper body muscle, that I never knew I could develop. For all
this I want to thank Andrea Pettay (Director of Fitness & Wellness) and her fabulous team of trainers whose directions,
routines and advice made this journey possible. You all are the very best…thank you!
Are there any obstacles you had to overcome with regard to eating or exercising?
From the exercise standpoint, it took about a month to convince myself that I was actually enjoying this new life-
changing routine. Not long after, I was hooked. I began to truly look forward to going the fitness center!
Have you noticed changes in other areas of your life as a result of your life changes?
Thanks to my wife’s superb cooking skills, I enjoy eating healthy now. Also, in my reduced portions, I remain very
conscious of my sugar intake and am very pleased that I avoided the reality of diabetes. It’s the only disease I know of that
can be avoided, so I decided to take full control of it. I’m proud that at the age of 70 I get many nice compliments from
friends, family and acquaintances. I miss working out at the PACC fitness center when I am out of town.
What would you say is the most important factor in your weight loss? Changed eating habits?
Exercise? Changed thinking? Something else?
Persistence foremost. Changed eating habits, exercise and changed thinking are all very important components of a
successful healthy lifestyle, but the most important factor is serious, unrelenting motivation. Without it the ball doesn’t
start rolling.
What advice would you give someone considering beginning an exercise program?
You must be fully convinced and committed that you want to do this 100% and you can accomplish the goals that you
have set for yourself. Be willing to make many sacrifices regarding food consumption, time management and sweat in the
gym. From what I have read and been told, exercise increases your chances of a longer, sustained healthy life, as well as
make you feel better about yourself in the process. It has certainly worked for me!

PRACTICING
Gratitude
In an interview with author Gretchen Rubin, author and University of Houston research
professor Brené Brown said, “I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find
happiness — it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”
Brown’s philosophy wasn’t wrong, at least not according to research. Studies show that
the more you express thanks, the happier you are.
Join us this November for our 30-day Gratitude Challenge. Just set aside 5-minutes each
day to meditate or reflect on what you are grateful for and see if you can make it a habit.
Try taking time to write it down or even to spread the gratefulness to someone else.
Come Thanksgiving we want to know,
what did practicing mediation and gratitude do for you?
