Message from the President

This is my final President’s Message, and there is not nearly enough space on this page or in the magazine to thank everyone for making the
last two years an enjoyable, meaningful and fun experience. It truly has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the 49th President of the
Princess Anne and to work alongside so many talented Team and Board members. The biggest takeaway from my tenure has been a deeper
understanding of, and appreciation for, how dedicated our PACC Team Members are, how challenging their jobs can be and how hard they
work every day to make our Club the premier private Club in this region and beyond. I began my two-year term expecting to be bombarded
with late night calls and friendly suggestions about improving our Club. While these occurrences were rare (except for the incessant
demand for PBR in the Chesapeake by a certain member), they were far eclipsed by positive feedback and encouraging comment cards that
confirmed to me how fortunate our 1,100 members are to have an Operations Team focused on delivering a unique experience for each of
us every time we step onto the campus.

I have been blessed to serve on a Board composed of exceptionally gifted people who have consistently brought energy and ideas to our meetings. We have
focused heavily on the Club’s future, realizing that in this challenging environment for private clubs, we must evolve to stay relevant and to attract the next
generation of PACC families. We have discussed how to accomplish this mission at virtually every Executive Committee and full Board meeting. I am indebted to
Pat Shuler, our Treasurer, Chris Fanney, our Vice-President, and Les Watson, our Secretary Emeritus, for the countless hours of service they have given our Club and
for their friendship. I also wish to thank all of our voluntary Board members for taking the time to not only serve, but also to remain engaged as we have studied
the important issues that will shape the future of our Club.

Finally, I must express my gratitude to a truly special gentleman who seems to have an infinite supply of kindness, patience and humility, Bill Shonk. Our many
meetings and telephone conversations about “Clubdom” and too many other topics to list in this column, will be missed. Bill has built an exceptional team with
talent and depth here at the PACC. Jenn Garrott, Kristen Bunting, Cathie Havrilesky, Matt Liebler, Matt Boyce, John Fraser, Andrea Pettay, Geoff Benson, Mardy
Colling, Steve Layden, McCall Andy and the entire Operations Team do an amazing job for us all.

Our Club remains in very capable hands with our new President, Chris Fanney, and Vice-President, Susan Pender, along with an outstanding Board. Thank you again
for allowing me to serve and for your faithful support of our Club.

With best wishes,

Jonathan L. Thornton

Up-to-Date from the General Manager

As I scribe this column in early October, we are preparing for the November 1st Annual Membership Meeting where new Directors and Officers
will be elected. While we look forward to welcoming these new leaders (please see page 6 for details), I very much wish to recognize and thank
outgoing Directors Trey Braithwaite, David Burton, Doug Russell, Sam Steingold and President Jon Thornton. Each of these Directors have served
the Princess Anne faithfully as committee chairs and provided valuable leadership that has truly made a difference. Mr. Braithwaite chaired
our Fitness Committee these past three years, leading with a no-nonsense, can-do approach that buoyed programming and fitness revenues
dramatically during his tenure. We frequently sought and David Burton generously shared his legal wisdom (particularly employment law
counsel) over the past three years. As Golf Committee Chair, Mr. Burton transitioned our new Golf Operations Team, empowered a proactive
Handicap Committee and thoughtfully considered and gently molded numerous golf and other Club issues. Membership Committee Chair
Doug Russell capably led his critical Committee through a wide range of confidentially delicate issues. His vision and passion to enhance the Club into the future while
honoring the Princess Anne’s special traditions are invaluable to our Board and Team. Mr. Sam Steingold strategically focused our Finance Committee, Board and
Operations Team on numerous fiscally significant Member benefit and facility maintenance capital investment priorities as well as revenue generating initiatives. I
am so grateful for his financial acumen, exceptional leadership and personal guidance through the Club’s refinancing. If you have a chance to personally reach out to
these devoted volunteers I encourage you to extend congratulations and appreciation.

There is not enough room on this page for me to fully scribe my deep gratitude and recognize the remarkable service of outgoing President Jon Thornton. Very few
realize the unique demands put upon a private club volunteer president and President Thornton has met each one with a thoroughly conscientious open mind and
special grace. He thoughtfully approached and fully vetted every issue – always without any agenda or preconceived notion. His wisdom and positive team leadership
style has guided the Princess Anne Family masterfully these past two years. A former quarterback, President (QB1) Thornton converted the master plan game plan
into the Chesapeake Room and his inclusive, tireless leadership and has set the table for PACC 20/20 & Beyond. His connection with the Board, our Team and the
Princess Anne Family is inspiring! Jon, I will forever be grateful for your mentoring and friendship and treasure our talks about family, faith and football. It is my hope
that in the days ahead the Princess Anne Family can fully express our gratitude to you, Kelly, Jessica, Ellie, Brooke, Riggins and the Thornton Family.

The holiday season is just around the corner and this issue highlights our holiday festivities. Please make plans today to enjoy your Club this special time of year. On
behalf of our Princess Anne Family of Membership and Operations Team I wish you and your family a joyous and safe holiday season! See you at the Princess Anne!

New Princess Anne Living Feature:

Hobby Highlights

We have some amazingly talented members at the PACC!
From musicians, to artists, to culinary masters and beyond, we
are always so impressed to see and hear of your wonderful
accomplishments! We want to share these personal pastimes in a
new segment called Hobby Highlights.
Please reach out to Marketing & Communications Director Kristen
Bunting at [email protected] to share photos and
brief stories about your passion. We can’t wait to learn more
about you!

Dr. Stanley Mason | Artist

My father had a masters in fine art and although he didn't use that degree to earn a living, he was a
wonderful watercolorist. Growing up, I paid little attention to art as I was involved in sports and other
activities and took another direction in science to became an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, practicing
here for 37 years. Upon retirement, I decided to attempt to utilize my right brain versus my left and
follow in my father’s footsteps by beginning to paint in 2016 at the Virginia Beach School of Art and
Gallery under the supervision of Simone. Simone teaches the only French atelier style in the area.
If you’re looking to engage your creative side, consider trying art. It’s been a wonderful, satisfying
endeavor for me with much improvement. One can’t play golf every day.

Membership Matters

Mr. Gary Beck

I have enjoyed cooking and entertaining all my life. I learned to cook from my mother who was never
afraid to try something new in the kitchen. I planted my first vegetable garden 30 years ago and a
lot of what I cook depends on what is coming out of the garden at any given time of the year. I too
enjoy trying new recipes all the time and invariably tweak them one way or another. I particularly like
preparing ethnic food from Southeast Asian to Indian, Mexican and Middle Eastern, among other
cuisines. I hope you enjoy one of my favorite dishes!

Beef with Oyster Sauce (Serves 2)

Ingredients:
• 1 lb flank steak or beef tenderloin cur into thin, 1" by 2" slices
• 3T dry sherry
• 3T cornstarch
• Dash of course ground pepper
• 4T oil (peanut or canola)
• 4 garlic cloves, minced
• 2T fresh ginger, minced
• 5 Serrano chilies (or Thai chilies as an alternative),
seeds removed, shredded
• 5 green onions, shredded into 1 1/2" length
• 6-8 bibb lettuce leaves
• 3 cups jasmine rice, cooked

Sauce - Combine & Set Aside
• 4 1/2T oyster sauce
• 2 1/2T soy sauce
• 1 1/2T honey
• 1 1/2T lemon juice

Place beef in mixture of sherry, cornstarch and black pepper. Turn to coat
and marinate for 20 min.

Heat wok over high heat. Add oil and stir. Fry beef until crisp on outside.
Add garlic and ginger, stir. Add chilies and onions, stir. Add sauce and stir
until slightly thickened.

Arrange lettuce leaves on plate, topped with rice. Pour beef mixture over
rice and serve.

Master PlanMaster Plan Update

PACC 20/20 & Beyond

As this issue of Princess Anne Living is being produced, the Board
of Directors has recommended the PACC 20/20 & Beyond plan
to voting members for their approval at the November 1 Annual
Meeting.

This strategic action plan includes significant enhancements to
our Club over the next six years, including:

• A complete renovation of our aquatics complex, which will
feature a new resort-style swimming pool with zero/beach
entry, children’s water features, cabana bar, shade structures,
resort-style furniture, an attractive entry building and family restrooms;

• The acquisition and renovation of the property at 3901 Holly Road, which will be converted to the “Holly Beach Bungalow” and
made available for overnight accommodations for Members and their guests;

• A new youth room in the clubhouse designed specifically as a retreat for young ladies and gentlemen to include computers,
gaming systems, table games, lounge furniture and more;

• Tennis and pickleball enhancements including court 8 being converted to two pickleball courts;
• The completion of our conversion to Better Billy Bunkers on our golf course;
• Other golf course improvements that may include the addition of a putting green adjacent to the driving range as well as an

enhanced short game practice area and cart path improvements;
• An indoor golf simulator/instructional center; and,
• A refreshing of the Linkhorn Lounge bar area to develop an elegant “bourbon bar” atmosphere.

To develop this plan, the Board worked diligently over the past two years with various Club Committees, a Master Planning
Committee, the Building Committee and our Operations Team in consultation with architectural, engineering and design
professionals. The collaborative group utilized input from the 2016 Member Survey, nationwide club trends and multiple studies, to
ensure that this plan encompasses projects that will best serve our current and future members.

Rather than reach out to our membership for an up-front
investment, it is the goal of the Board and Operations Team to
fund PACC 20/20 & Beyond through our monthly capital fees
and bank financing. Fiscal year 2019 was an exceptional year
financially for the Club, with the Chesapeake Room renovation,
enhancements to the indoor tennis facility, and significant
number of new members, contributing to that success.
The Board is confident that continued strong performance
will allow us to fund the PACC 20/20 & Beyond in a fiscally
responsible and strategic manner. The only request of you
is that you continue to enjoy your Club and encourage your
friends, family and colleagues to join the PACC family.

Please find more details online by visiting: www.princessannecc.com/pacc2020

Should you have any questions regarding PACC 20/20 & Beyond, please feel free to contact General Manager Bill Shonk at 440-3100

or [email protected].

CourseGolf Course & Grounds Update

By Matt Boyce

Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Club Grounds

Winter is No Off-Season for Your Golf Course Maintenance Team

We often get the question; “You guys must enjoy the winter down time….so what do you actually do all winter long?”
Well, winter is a great time to recharge our batteries, spend time with family, catch up from a long summer and, candidly,
prepare for the next summer! Here’s a list “that includes but is not limited to” (lawyer jargon) the tasks we work on during
the winter months:

• Apply winter weed control • Fix cart paths

• Trim trees • Recycle scrap metal

• Move sand in bunkers • Repair equipment

• Wax equipment • Sweep the shop

• Recycle anti-freeze • Grind bed knives on mowers

• Inventory fertilizer and chemicals • Chip limbs and debris

• Service the irrigation pump station • Recycle oil

• Paint the interior of the shop • Cut down native grasses

• Sharpen reels • Replace sand in bunkers

• Mulch pinecones • Perform an irrigation system audit

• Install drainage • Organize the shop

• Complete projects per Green Committee direction • Move roping around on fairways

• Edge irrigation heads • Apply Spring weed control

• Root prune tree roots • Repair hoses

• Paint equipment • Purge non-essentials

• Repair irrigation • Apply snow prevention on sidewalks

• Push snow • Put up a Christmas tree and hand out gifts to the Team
• Order fertilizer and chemicals while eating Beach Bully!

• Fry a turkey for the team on Thanksgiving

TennisFrom the Courts From the Links

John’s Tip of the Month

We all know that your elbow should be bent on
a forehand volley in order for you to be able to
“jab” your racquet forward towards the ball. It’s
the elbow position in relation to your body though
that’s critical in you being able to hit it crisply and
firmly. The elbow should in fact be tucked in, close to
where your stomach is in front of your body, which
keeps you from taking any backswing, giving you
racquet head stability and a much more connected
feel. Too much “swinging” on volleys is probably
the most common flaw recreational players are
plagued with so focusing on your elbow position will
definitely cure you of that.

Jr. Country Club Cup

We took eight of the best junior tennis players from our program to compete in the Jr. Country Club Cup at the
Country Club of Virginia (CCV). There are four clubs involved in this event with each team made up of one girl and
one boy from each age group 12’s through 18’s. The players participate in singles and mixed doubles matches

and each game won goes towards their team
total. The team who wins the highest number
of games wins the Cup. Our team fought hard,
but fell short to CCV and ended up finishing in a
two-way tie for second with Farmington CC. Nor-
folk Yacht took third. Here was our line-up:

Girls – Emma Hugo (G18s) Alexandra Kerr
(G16s), Andersen Legum (G14s) & Grayson
White (G12s)
Boys – Ashton Legum (B18s), Aidan O’Connor
(B16s), Alex Ortiz (B14s), & Jackson Perkins
(B12s)

We are proud of our junior players for being
a part of Team PACC and giving it all they had
including having outstanding sportsmanship!

2019 Senior Tidewater Cup

It was a tough day at our 10th Annual Senior

Tidewater Cup where we had our best senior men (60

and over) attempting to defend our Cup against three

other area clubs, Norfolk Yacht, Elizabeth Manor and

VBTCC. Many of the matches were budgeted to go

90 minutes, but took two and a half hours which just

goes to show how competitive this event has been.

Having said that, Elizabeth Manor dominated the

event winning all 10 of their matches! The rest of

us tied with three wins a piece which then we go to

“number of sets lost” to break the tie. This put NYCC Players: (front row) Nate Bolling, Richard Doummar, Robert Mills, David Beatty,
in 2nd place putting us tied for 3rd with VBTCC in which Michael Blachman, Jimmy Sellers, Mickey Walker, Larry Parker, Steve Burwell, Ira
case we then look at “head to head” wins between the
remaining two teams and wouldn’t you know we won Steingold, Jerry Clarke, Stuart Bryant, Rod Buffington and David Holland (not
that 2 to 1 placing us squarely in 3rd and VBTCC 4th. pictured:Tom Bakke, Mike Robinson, Michael Marquart and John Failes)

Can’t win ‘em all is what we took away from it and you

can rest assured this team will double their efforts to regain the Cup in the not too distant future.

What an amazing Spindle Cup weekend it

was with our ladies finishing up with our 5th

win in seven years! It started with four singles

matches on Saturday morning where we

swept without dropping a set before going

we left off we swept the four doubles courts

too although three of them went the distance.

There have been very few years in Spindle Cup’s Players (left to right): Nicole Legum,Traci Shoemaker, Liz Iuliano,

matches since winners play winners from Saturday. Even with that we were still able to win three out of the four singles

and three out of the four doubles to win the Cup. A huge congrats to our ladies for an amazing performance!

TRAINER TIPS It’s hard to be perfect over the holidays. The foods
around you are likely not made with the healthiest
ingredients. You don’t have to be perfect, just do your
best! Try to maintain your routine as much as possible,
and get back to normal instead of giving up until the
New Year.

In an interview with author Gretchen Rubin, author and University of Houston research
professor Brené Brown said, “I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find
happiness — it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”
Brown’s philosophy wasn’t wrong, at least not according to research. Studies show that
the more you express thanks, the happier you are.

The Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

The foundation of all standing poses, Mountain Pose makes a great starting position,
resting pose or tool to improve posture. It seems basic, but it can change your life. I do
this whenever I am standing in line…anywhere!

• Stand with toes facing forward, from close to hip-width apart.
• Pull feet away from one another, energizing your legs, knees soft.
• Point tail bone down (hips neutral).
• Pull navel in and up.
• Roll shoulders back and down.
• Open the chest. Breathe deeply.
• Chin level. Top of head lifts gently.

CINDY | FAST 5

1. FAVORITE HEALTHY SNACK?
I always have a bag of almonds, craisins, raisins,
sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc, tossed
together. I usually keep a bag in the car too.

2. WHO WOULD YOU LIKE TO TRAIN WITH?
Tony Horton from Beach Body. He’s funny but
can work the body so that you continue to see
results day after day.

3. FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A FREE HOUR:
Being outside, preferably near or on the water.

4. FAVORITE BOOK:
"The Girl who Circumnavigated Fairyland in
a Ship of her own Making" by Catherynne M.
Valente. The “fairy tale of old” language used
creates and extraordinarily beautiful story worth
reading out loud to children.

5. FAVORITE QUOTE:
Stand in the center of your own circle and let all
things take their course around you.
