Heroes of Healthy Living

Mr. Bill Fanney

Age: 92
“This man is motivating and an inspiration to all of us.” – Doug Ellis
How would you describe your personality? Positive. The good Lord blessed me with
good times, a wonderful family and friends. But you’ve got to work at it. There are lots
of things in this world to get you down.
How has your activity level changed throughout the years? I’ve always played tennis. At
one point a group of us had trouble getting tennis courts, so we raised money and built
our own, the Cape Henry Raquet Club. I also started at the fitness center back when
it was a pocket-sized space tucked under the stairs. Take-Away: Find something you
enjoy doing.
What kind of exercise and activities do you currently enjoy? I still play tennis five days for week, although we sure don’t get around
like we used to! Afterward we have a cocktail, relax and talk politics. In addition to the tennis I come to the fitness center four
to five times per week. (I don’t feel like I get enough exercise on the tennis courts anymore.) I do five to six miles on the bike, a
half a mile on the treadmill and some weights. I feel comfortable here. The folks at the fitness center are like family and I get to
see the peers my son grew up with. Take-Away: Exercising with friends makes it more fun, keeps you in it longer and helps you
stay connected socially.
What is your diet like? I don’t eat heavily… lots of fruit and vegetables. I typically have one big cup of coffee in the morning and
one to two cocktails in the evening. Take-Away: Moderation!
Did you ever smoke? No, although many around me did. My parents both smoked (everyone did back then) and they gave away
Camel cigarettes for free during WWII. The one time I tried to smoke it made me sick to my stomach, so I knew it wasn’t for me.
Do you have a philosophy about health? Good genes are a gift to you. You don’t have a lot of control but diet, exercise and a
positive attitude are important. Appreciate every day.
What advice would you offer to someone trying to live a long and healthy life? When you retire you get out of touch with the
mainstream of what’s going on and your social circles continue to diminish as you get older. I feel that my strong, committed
family has been such a support for me. You never lose the feeling of concern for your family and for wanting to keep in touch
with what the grandchildren are doing, to see them succeed in their lives. Take-Away: Staying connected with family and
friends and seeing how your life has impacted others gives continued significance to your life.
