Message from the President
Winter is approaching and with it comes our popular Annual Oyster Roast and holiday celebrations. Our team is
ready to deliver memorable and first rate experiences for you and your families this holiday season, so come up to
the Club and celebrate with us! Your PACC Board has heard our membership and will soon answer your number
one request from our member survey with an enhancement to the Chesapeake Room. The Building Committee
has been working diligently with a designer and contractor to finalize plans for a refurbished, “warmed up” space
that will be a fantastic addition to the life of the Club with a full bar and casually elegant dining for our families
and golfers, tennis and pickle ball players who wish to enjoy themselves after play. Make sure to visit www.
princessannecc.com/Chesapeake and check out the conceptual renderings for this reinvigorated dining amenity.
In closing, I would like to thank our outgoing Directors, Sheridan Conley, Brad Foster, Michael McCabe, Jr. and Tammy Ross, for their
dedicated service. I also wish to welcome and thank our new slate of Directors who are coming aboard at an exciting time in our Club’s
great history, Bekki Jucksch, John Mazach, Josh Parnell and Monica Stein.
We look forward to seeing you at the Club this season!
Jonathan L. Thornton
Up-to-Date from the General Manager
As I scribe this column in early October, we are preparing for the October 26th Annual Membership Meeting
where new Directors and Officers will be elected. While we look forward to welcoming these new leaders
highlighted on page 4, I very much wish to recognize and thank outgoing Directors Sheridan Conley, Brad
Foster, Mike McCabe and Tammy Ross. Each of these Directors have served the Princess Anne faithfully as
committee chairs and provided valuable leadership that has truly made a difference. Mrs. Conley chaired our
Tennis Committee, leading with an inclusive special passion for a wide range of tennis programming. Mr. Foster
has led our House Committee, patiently shepherding our culinary team transition. Mr. McCabe has chaired the
Membership Committee, comprehensively vetting each new Member candidate with the utmost confidentiality
and care. Tammy Ross has led the Entertainment Committee, looking to enhance traditional favorites while introducing new social
opportunities. If you have a chance to personally reach out to these devoted volunteers, I encourage you to extend congratulations and
appreciation.
As your Entertainment Committee evaluated New Year’s Eve musical entertainment options, the reticence of many to drive on New
Year’s Eve and the way days fell in this year’s calendar, the Committee opted to change things up a bit. So this year’s party will take place
on Saturday, December 29th instead of Monday the 31st and will feature two bands, Star Circuit and The Gentlemen & Their Lady. We
invite you to celebrate early and join us for our Almost New Year’s Eve Glow Party!
The holiday season is just around the corner and this issue highlights our holiday festivities. Please make plans today to enjoy your Club
this special time of year. We have so much to be thankful for and I cannot say thanks enough to the entire Princess Anne Family of
Membership and Operations Team. It is truly a privilege to be part of a Team that remains committed to our mission and looks forward
to providing Personal Attention that is Consistently Captivating. We are inspired by the devotion and commitment of the Princess Anne
Membership and thank each of you for your ongoing support. Have a truly joyous and safe holiday season!
See you at The Princess Anne!

Master PlanMaster Plan Update
An Exciting Time to be a PACC Member
What an exciting time to be a member of the Princess Anne!
As you all know, our membership completed a Membership
Satisfaction Survey which ranked the areas of our Club to
be enhanced. 68% definitively ranked a warmed-up, cozier
Chesapeake Room their number one priority. Our Board of
Directors heard you clearly and formed a Master Plan and special
Building Committee to work with numerous architects and
contractors in order to execute this warm up and future projects.
Chesapeake Room Warm Up
We are excited to share this project's conceptual designs with
you. Baskervill Architects out of Richmond have developed an
updated, rich conceptual design drawn with inspiration from
the timeless prestige of the Chris-Craft brand name, which
encompasses the history of elegance in pleasure boating. The
customs and values of this elite brand are brought through
in the Chesapeake's custom materials including fine wood,
leather and high-end fixtures.
The reinvigorated Chesapeake will be a wonderful gathering place for everyone – individuals, couples and families – to relax
with a cocktail after play, catch the game or settle in for a nice meal. At this point, the intention is to provide continuous
service for most of the day, providing members a place to grab a cup of coffee, pop open their laptop for teleworking or enjoy
the PACC’s exquisite lunch and dinner service. The renovation to the Chesapeake will uphold the rich foundation that is the
heart of our Club and bring in accentuating qualities steeped in customs and values.

The Golden Rules
The Golden Rules of Golf Will Set You Free.
New Changes to the Rules of Golf • NEW PROCEDURE FOR DROPPING A BALL
There will be major changes to the Rules
of Golf taking effect January 1, 2019 .The
Golden Rules will focus on these changes
in the upcoming editions. We will focus on
the rules that are expected to have the most
impact on the game and to be of most interest
to golfers. Below are a few examples of the
changes coming to you.
Please visit the USGA website (www.usga.org) to see examples 2019 Rule: Players will continue to drop a ball when taking

BALL IN MOTION ACCIDENTALLY DEFLECTED • How a ball may be dropped is simplified; the only
requirement will be that the ball be let go from knee
height so that it falls through the air and does not touch
any part of the player’s body or equipment before it hits
the ground.
2019 Rule: Under Rule 11.1, for all accidental deflections,
including when the ball hits the player or opponent or their
equipment or caddies:
• There will be no penalty and the ball will be played as it
lies (with limited exceptions).
• To address any concern that a player might deliberately
position equipment to act as a backstop and potentially
deflect his or her ball, there will be a penalty if the ball
hits equipment that was positioned for that purpose (Rule
11.2a).

Els for Autism Pro-Am Invitational
The Princess Anne was honored to host the second annual Els
for Autism Pro-Am Invitational August 19-20, 2018. The event,
presented by Charles Barker’s Champions for Kids, paired teams of
four golfers with a professional golfer for a captain’s choice round with
the goal of raising funds for autism awareness, specifically benefiting
the Els for Autism Foundation, Virginia Autism Foundation,
Families of Autistic Children in Tidewater and our local SEAL
teams. Highlighting this year’s pro-am was the inclusion of Ernie Els,
Marc Leishman, Carl Paulson and Paul “Chewy” Howell. Through
sponsorships, a pro-auction, silent auction and party ticket sales, our
members and guests raised more than $232,000, far exceeding last
year’s fundraising total
of $146,000. Taking
home the tournament
trophy was the team
of Mark Finn, Patrick Finn, Steve Peake and Evan Beck. There was a
tie for the winning pro between our own Matt Liebler, PGA and Carl
Paulson. On behalf of the Els for Autism Pro-Am Committee and
your Princess Anne Operations Team, we want to thank our members
for your generous support of this event. We look forward to hosting
again in 2019.

John’s Tip of the Month
Maximizing Your Enjoyment on the Court
It’s so easy to get into a routine in our lives. Being
creatures of habit we typically have a routine that we
stick to regarding what time we wake up, what we
eat for breakfast, what time we head out the door
(whether it’s going to work or to the gym) and of
course, when we play tennis. We go play with our
regular groups and play the same game, which in
turn brings similar results, depending on whether
we had a good day or a bad day. Here are a few tips
to break the monotony and maximize not only your
enjoyment of playing tennis but also get the most
out of the time you spend on court:
1. Each time you play, go out with a new personal
goal of trying something you would normally
not do at least once, such as poaching on a return of serve, serving and/or returning and rushing the net, a
swing volley, a dropshot or a down-the-alley return of serve.
2. Try different formations with your partner such as: Australian, i–formation, double back.
3. Use signals to get your partner on board with what you’re trying to do and to have them cover you.
4. Try variations in spin on your returns such as slice, topspin, sidespin.
5. If playing singles and you’re typically a baseliner, try rushing the net or drawing your opponent into the net so
that you can pass or lob.
I get this comment all the time, “John I go out there with good intentions but ultimately I want to win, so I’m
afraid to try these things and typically revert back to my old game.”
We’ve all been there, right? The thing is, just try it one time on a point that’s not critical, such as when you’re ahead
40-love in a game, that would be a good time. If you succeed then you’ve just added another dimension to your
game. If you fail, no big deal, you at least tried it and you may pluck up the courage to try it again if you can figure
out what went wrong. At the end of the day, you are going to be a lot more satisfied with your performance if you
at least tried something different. Going out with personal goals helps your enthusiasm going in and breaks the
monotony, which in turn, gives you a higher ceiling and level of enjoyment.
“If you succeed then you’ve just added another dimension to your game.
If you fail, no big deal, you at least tried it!"

only did we have perfect weather, but the quest for

at six wins each, but would then win the tie breaker Players: (front row) Rod Buffington, Ira Steingold, Larry Parker, Beau Walker,

2018 Spindle Cup
It was an exciting, fun weekend for the 23rd
Annual Spindle Cup ladies team tennis event
held at CCV in Richmond, September 8-9.
Our team was trying to improve on their
second place finish to CCV over the last two
years and started with a very strong first day
Saturday, winning seven out of a total eight
matches putting us squarely in first place! Players (left to right): Nicole Legum, Diane Stein, Meridith Brady, Hillary Einwick,
The score came from a total of three singles Lisa Deaver, John Fraser, Peggy Jones, Meg Haynsworth, Vinita Folck, Michelle Fox and
wins out of four, to four of four doubles wins! Marie Clunan.
Day two started out a little rough where in the
midst of rain we had to move the event indoors where we lost all four singles positions, two of them albeit going to third set tie
breakers. We lost the first set in all four of the doubles and looked to be in somewhat of a downward spiral, when suddenly, we
come back to split sets in two of them before going on to win in third set tie breakers. We lost at number four, so our number
one doubles ended up as the last match, with it all on the line, as we were tied for first with CCV. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be as
their girls swept us despite a valiant effort to break the tie and retake the Cup for another year. I couldn’t be prouder of the level
of tennis and effort our ladies put forth the entire weekend and I know that the Cup is within reach very soon. Way to go ladies!
Member/Member Mixed Doubles Club Championship
We had 21 teams for the 2018 Member-Member Mixed Doubles Club Championship over the weekend of October
5-7. There were 3 divisions: Open, A and B with round robin formats used in both Open and B. Open had a red and blue
group with 3 teams in each. The winner of each group played each other in the final. GMU sophomore, Ryan Charles
and Leslie Cutchins won the red group with straight set wins over Neil Brown and Bev Best as well as Brady McNaugh-
ton and Vinita Folck. In the blue group Travis Bode and Debby Levi defeated Chris Poulos and Jen Clark as well as Sam
Steingold and Amy Paschold.
• Final: Travis Bode and Debby Levi defeated Ryan Charles and Leslie Cutchins 6-3,3-6,6-3.
• Playoff for 3rd and 4th: Sam Steingold and Amy Paschold defeated Brady McNaughton and Vinita Folck.
• Congrats to Debby Levi for achieving the “Triple Crown” for 2018 by winning all three club championships in the

• Our A division was a 16 draw which was the biggest of the three and was won by Brandon Beavers and
Aden Murray. They beat Ira Steingold and Lisa Deaver in the final by a score of 7-6,6-0.

Holiday Survival Guide
Overeating during the holidays is one sure route to self-inflicted
misery: lethargy, heaviness and bloating, not to mention those
unwanted pounds. Americans average two to three pounds of extra
baggage between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those homemade
treats taste so good that we tend to eat too much of them - we have
probably all been there. The holiday season is a beautiful time of
celebration with family and friends, so enjoy the food, drinks and
company but do make wise choices that make you feel happy about
the morning after. I believe in moderation…enjoy that pecan pie,
but make it your practice to stop when you have had enough.
A great way to practice mindful eating during holidays is to ask yourself
what are you really hungry for? How will that food make you feel 15
minutes later? And, is it really worth it?
Jennifer's Party Tips
Eat some fat. A healthy fat snack before leaving for that holiday party will help curb that desire for
grandmother’s treats. It is NEVER a good idea to arrive at a party famished. I love to have a large glass of
lemon water and a handful of walnuts, macadamia nuts or olives before stepping out. Fat will help you to
feel full while also stimulating your metabolism.
Pick beverages wisely. Liquors, sweeter wines and many mixed drinks
contain 250-450 calories per glass. If you choose to drink alcohol,
select ones with lower carbs like red wine or spirits mixed with soda
water and lemon. Watch out for the high-calorie egg nog! Stay hydrated
by sipping water throughout the festivities and have a glass of room
temperature water with lemon before your meal arrives. That will help to alkalize your
system to lessen heartburn and quench your thirst to possibly eat less.
Maintain perspective. One day won't make or break your health plan. It takes days of overeating to gain
true weight. If you over-indulge at a holiday meal, put it far behind you and return to your usual eating
the next day without guilt. The important thing to remember is balance and moderation. It’s okay to eat
too much once in a while.
My Quick Fix
The morning after the holiday party, I add 1 teaspoon of activated coconut charcoal to 12
ounces of fresh lemon water to give me that extra detox kick. It works magic to bind with
toxins, de-bloat and increase energy. Remember, the more toxins in your body, the more body
fat. And, the more fat, the more toxins.
Happy & Healthy Holidays!

In an interview with author Gretchen Rubin, author and University of Houston research
professor Brené Brown said, “I don’t have to chase extraordinary moments to find
happiness — it’s right in front of me if I’m paying attention and practicing gratitude.”
Brown’s philosophy wasn’t wrong, at least not according to research. Studies show that
the more you express thanks, the happier you are.
Join us this November for our 30-day Gratitude Challenge.
Set aside five minutes each day to meditate or reflect on
what you are grateful for and see if you can make it a
habit. Try taking time to write it down or even to spread
the gratefulness to someone else.
Come Thanksgiving we want to know, what
did practicing mediation and gratitude do for you?

Get into your Zone with myzone

Effort Points (MEPs), with a focus on rewarding effort

your personal workouts here at the fitness center, in
group classes, or on your personal smartphone. Your
myzone strap will also “talk” to the cardio equipment
to give you a more accurate heart rate reading.
Here’s what current PACC users have to say about
the benefits they’ve found in using myzone:
myzone has prompted me to
focus on my personal scale of
effort and compare that level in
different classes...weight, cardio
and stretching. Have had to
charge the piece infrequently.
