Mission Statement

At Washington Rock Dance, we believe in acknowledging the
sincere individuality residing in each and every student of
dance. We foster the unique development of our students by

providing an opportunity to be creative, understand the field
of body mechanics, and discover their personal sense of

artistry through the performance of high caliber works. Our
developmentally focused training is dedicated to locating a
student’s maximum potential while experiencing a smart,

inspirational, and fun environment.

About
Washington Rock Ballet

Washington Rock Ballet (WRB) provides an educational
atmosphere for the serious ballet student. WRB offers
students high caliber dance training and performance
opportunities so they can be prepared for a career in dance.

The process of developing a Ballet dancer is progressive and
continual. WRB employs 5 levels of study, each requiring that
physical and developmental benchmarks are met in order to
progress to the next level. Students for WRB are selected by
an evaluation process twice per year.

WRB is a unique opportunity for young dancers to engage in
a professional learning environment while receiving
outstanding training. Level One and Level Two dancers are
taught proper placement, classroom protocol, and expand
their vocabulary of ballet steps and movements based on a
syllabus designed specifically for their development. At an
advanced pace, the young dancer gains artistic discipline,
musicality and increased enjoyment of dance through
increased proficiency. The program lays a solid foundation
for Company work and individual performing roles through

participation in Company performances. Students progress
to consecutive levels based on evaluation by the Company
faculty. Level Three through Level Five continues the rapid
technical progress made by the dancers and provides
opportunities to dance roles in classical and contemporary
pieces.

Calendar
WRB meets for company class and rehearsals each Saturday,
September through June. Level is determined by the dancer’s
age and ability after acceptance into the program. Dancers
are required to take several Ballet technique classes
throughout the week in addition to company rehearsal.

Auditions
Auditions for Washington Rock Ballet are at the beginning of
the Fall and Spring seasons. Please contact Washington Rock
Dance if you are interested in auditioning or would like more
information about the Company.

Louis Horowitz
“Dr. Stahlbaum”

When Louis Horowitz first heard the words, uttered by a
dazzled audience member, "that Horowitz really lights up the
stage," he knew. What did he know? He knew he was born to
be in the show. This monumental turning point occurred
during the first dress rehearsal of Horowitz's debut as Dr.
Stahlbaum in the 2016 Nutcracker presented by Washington
Rock Dance. Since then, Horowitz has appeared in 10 more Nutcracker
performances, mastering his role as Dr. Stahlbaum through a regiment of
intense method acting and rehearsal. Additionally, Horowitz, known as a
powerful orator of best man wedding speeches and eulogies, was requested to
perform in Rock Dance Collective's "Invited." "Invited," a three night immersive
theater experience in SoHo, NY was received extremely well by the dance and
theater communities and critics. Horowitz, authoring his own script,
performed as the host of a melodramatic party and delivered an introduction,
a toast, and a revealing. In 2021, Louis Horowitz appeared in his first
professional modern dance show called "Bodies of Work" presented by Rock
Movement Collective. Prior to live performances, in 2012, Horowitz made his
film debut when he appeared in a music video for the song “Bring It On” by
New Jersey’s notorious rock band The Gaslight Anthem. Louis Horowitz
welcomes the opportunity to perform in his seventh consecutive season as Dr.
Stahlbaum in Washington Rock's The Nutcracker .

pre-professional student at the ABT JKO school in New
York City. Brannic has studied ballet for 6 years,
competed in the 2022 YAGP Finals, and hopes to one day
become a principal dancer with ABT. Growing up in
Austin, Texas; Brannic loved going to see Ballet Austin’s production of “The
Nutcracker”. His parents took notice of this and signed him up for a ballet class
at a local dance studio. Brannic instantly fell in love with dance, and decided
that he really wanted to share his passion with the world.

The Story of the Nutcracker

Act I
The Christmas Eve Party

It is Christmas Eve at the Stahlbaum Residence – A large and grand
home with the most beautiful tree imaginable. The Stahlbaums are
hosting their annual Christmas Party, welcoming the arrival of their
family and friends. The children, Clara and Fritz, are dancing and
playing as they welcome their friends too.

The party grows festive with music and dance. Soon, the mysterious
Godfather Drosselmeyer arrives. He is a skilled clock and toy maker
and always full of surprises. With him is his handsome nephew to
whom Clara is drawn. Drosselmeyer brings everyone’s attention to
the life-sized dolls he has brought. They are the delight of the party,
each taking a turn to dance.

As the children begin to play with the dolls, Dr. Stahlbaum fears they
will break and has them removed. Clara and Fritz begin to protest,
but Drosselmeyer has brought something else, the Nutcracker
soldier, which he gives to Clara. Fritz immediately becomes jealous
as Clara and her friends dance with the beloved doll, and plans to
steal it from her. Chaos ensues and Fritz ends up breaking Clara’s
new gift. Clara is heartbroken, but Drosselmeyer quickly repairs the
Nutcracker with magical dust. All of the guests are invited to join in
the final dance of the party, and depart for the evening.

Tiny mice enter the parlor searching for crumbs left over from the
party. Clara, anxious to see her beloved Nutcracker, sneaks back into
the ballroom to check on him, and at the stroke of midnight finds
herself surrounded by the little scurrying mice. She bravely scared
them off, then falls asleep with her Nutcracker in her arms.

Clara’s Dream

Magical things happen all around Clara as she sleeps. The parlor is
transformed and when Clara awakens she is surprised to discover
her beautiful Christmas tree has magically grown high about her.
Soon an army of huge mice appear, led by the fierce Mouse Queen.
Toy soldiers arrive to battle the mice, but are quickly defeated. The
Nutcracker springs to life and engages in a duel with the Mouse
Queen. Clara sees the Nutcracker is quickly losing ground in the
sword fight, and makes a daring move, bravely throwing her pillow
at the Mouse Queen. The MouseQueen charges towards Clara. The
Nutcracker seizes the moment to bring the battle to an end. The
Mouse Queen drops to the floor and is carried away by her minions.

The Land of Snow

A spell the Mouse Queen had put on the Nutcracker is broken, and
he turns into a handsome Prince, who bears a striking resemblance
to Drosselmeyer’s nephew. In a snow covered sleigh, the Prince
takes Clara on a journey to the Land of the Snow, an enchanted forest
wonderland where they are welcomed by the Snow Queen, reindeer,
dancing snowflakes.

Act II
The Land of the Sweets

The Prince and Clara arrive at the Land of the Sweets where they are
greeted by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her retinue of cloud fairies. The
Prince tells her about their daring battle with the army of mice the
Sugar Plum Fairy applauds Clara for her bravery and rewards them
both with a celebration of dances and gifts:

Spain- Hot Chocolate
Arabia- Coffee
China- Tea
Russia- Candy Canes
Austria- Marzipan
France- Gingerbread
Holland- Flowers

As a finale, the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier dance a beautiful
Pas De Deux. Then Clara and her Prince say farewell to the Land of
the Sweets, and continue their enchanted journey to other magical
lands.
