I Wonder Y Preschool News

[email protected]

Springtime is approaching and it’s always such a good feeling to share the Easter story.
Thank you to you as church members for giving our teachers the opportunity to relay the wonderful
story of the resurrection, because without the resurrection, there would be no reason to celebrate
Christmas.

Our annual Easter egg hunt and party will be on Wednesday, March 27th from 9 am – 11 am. The pre-
schoolers participate by bringing a basket with 12 filled plastic eggs for the egg hunt. We’ll combine all
of the eggs and hide them on the playground or grassy area (weather permitting). Then sweets, treats
and games follow our egg hunt.

I Wonder Y Preschool 2013 Fall Registration is underway this month. Registration fee of $40 secures
enrollment. Cost remains at $20 per day. If you know of a relative or neighbor who is interested in pre-
school for next year, please send them our way.

At this time of year, our older students are completing their Kindergarten screenings. Yes, they are all
doing very well. I know they have the skills they need, but not always sure they will perform, so be in
prayer for them.

Thank you, Jan Tidgren, for introducing us to Neysa Jenkins, our new preschool cook. She is able to
plan meals, shop and cook for preschool. Welcome Neysa!

Preschool will be closed on Good Friday, 3/29th and Monday 4/1st for spring break.
We appreciate each and every one of you and the ministry opportunities of
CUMC.
We are so blessed.

CAMDENTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
January 14, 2013

Present: Bret English, Sheri English, Sandy Welsh, Audrey Howe, Linda Marsden, Gary Smith, Harold Ewy, Joan Ewy, Chris
Reth, Tom Reth, Sandi Buse, Pastor Marc Magana, Bruce Blair, Jerry Jones, Judy Jones, Wayne DeVries, Alice DeVries, Gail
Snyder, Betsy Snyder, Clara Davis, Jerry Davis, Eva Maxwell, Troy Green, Kristin Green, Pat Logue, Patty Logue and Beth
Finke.

After a very tasty meal served by Byron Willis, Council Chairman Bret English brought our meeting to order. Pastor Marc led
us in a devotion and prayer. Bret reminded us that each committee chairperson is a member of church council, and a census
was taken of all in attendance resulting with the decision that all present may vote on council issues.

Music – Sheri English
We had an excellent Advent season. Thanks to voice and bell choirs for their hard work.
It is only 4 weeks until Ash Wednesday, February 13th. Palm Sunday will be on March 24th and Easter will be on March
31st.

Staff Parish – Gary Smith
Not much going on right now, all seems to be going very well.
Gary made the motion to give all staff a 2% raise in salary (with the exception of Pr. Marc whose salary/benefits are
decided in a specific meeting for that purpose). Sandy Welsh seconded the motion. Bret offered time for discussion; no
response. Motion carried.

Worship – Audrey Howe
Audrey introduced herself and explained that she does not have committee members at this time but will be contacting
individuals to fill those positions. She asked for recommendations from Pr. Marc and members of council.

UMW/LAMB House – Sandy Welsh
UMW will begin holding regular meetings again in February after the holiday break.
We continue to volunteer at LAMB House and supporting it with donations of items and cash. We are blessed to be able
to work in an establishment that helps so many in the community.

Wonderful Wednesday Program – Patty Logue
We are still working on our new Wednesday evening children’s and adult’s programs on Wednesday evening after the
all-church dinner. The response has been very sparse and we are struggling.
Corinne Blair, Kristin Green and Patty have been offering activities for younger children in the hope that their parents
will attend the programs offered to them as well as bring them into Sunday attendance and participation.
We are still trying to get a “Younger Adults” class started again. If that group begins to meet and they begin to know
each other, we feel it will naturally lead to friendships and the desire to work together raising their children in
church and becoming active members of the congregation. Pr. Marc has volunteered to get the class started so all we
need now is to capture the younger adults’ attention.

Children’s Ministry – Kristin Green
We are beginning to prepare for Easter – considering what we can do to explain Lent to our children and involve them in
Easter worship. We will have our usual Easter egg hunt on the 31st, but we want to make sure our little people are learn
ing the true meaning of Easter.
Also working on this summer’s VBS program. She has ordered the preview package for VBS and wants to remind us that
it takes lots and lots of volunteers to make it happen. Please say “yes” when she asks for your help.

Building and Grounds – Troy Green
Just trying to keep things clean and get ready for spring yard work.

Office/Administration – Beth Finke
Continuing to work on our new database and accounting program. Many thanks to Linda Marsden for her hours and
hours of help.
Thanks to all for their patience and for all you do to make my job a pleasure.

Preschool – Eva Maxwell
Thank you so much for the church’s immediate response to the tragedy that happened in Connecticut and your
determination to make our preschool facility as safe as it can possibly be for our children. So far Bud Buse has in
stalled a door bell on the preschool entrance and at the church entry, and peephole to allow us to identify everyone
before they enter. More plans are being implemented daily and we thank the Trustees for their work.
We also thank Trustees for painting the window trim after the new windows were installed and shades re-hung.
All our state reporting has been completed and submitted well before due dates.

UMM – Wayne DeVries
Not much is going on right now at the church.
We were able to assist 4 church members during 2012, purchased and installed 2 shelters for Helping Hands, and are
finishing our long work project on their mobile homes that will be used to shelter men needing to live there while

UMM—Continued - 7

receiving training and rehabilitation. We also installed a bathroom at the Helping Hands Thrift Store. Al Mahrer
built a fantastic swing set for the preschool and we installed it and worked on the playground. We helped unload

semi of food for distribution, supported Medical Missions T0shirt program and purchased 5 new 8foot tables for our

own fellowship hall.
All in all, we have a very talented group of men in our church and we all have a great time working together and

trying to make a difference in our area.

Crafters – Alice DeVries

Our group has done very well this past year. We used the money we’ve made from our sales to make donations to
Helping Hands, LAMB House, CADV, Share the Harvest and programs and projects here in our church. We made

196 stuffed animals for Lake Regional Hospital distribution, made place cards for hospital trays, made 21 lap robes

for Windsor Estates and provided Christmas gifts and groceries for multiple families through “Mitten Tree”. We
have lots of fun and encourage others to join us.

Finance – Bruce Blair

Year end giving was enough to allow us to pay our apportionments fully, pay all outstanding commitments and start
2013 on good footing.

Pledges for 2013 have been coming in; 73 pledges amounting to $167,404.

The proposed budget for 2013 was handed out for council review. After some discussion Finance committee recom-

mended the budget, Gary Smith seconded the recommendation and council voted to pass budge as proposed.
Trustees – Tom Reth

The committee filled offices for the coming year – for the seventh year running, no change in officers.

We are working on making the church more secure and are looking into panic hardware for preschool interior
doors and the church entrance. If we decide to purchase available items costing approximately $500, we may be

asking for special contributions.

We continue to stress cleaning out of storage areas and uncared for areas in the church building, upstairs and
down. When everyone has their appointed areas cleaned, we will be happy to go through and throw out un

wanted/unused items that remain. We cleaned out the garage about a year and a half ago and nobody seems to

have missed anything that was thrown away. Bottom line – we will have our church clean and neat.

Library – Chris Reth
Thank you for re-funding the library in the new church budget.

We have already purchased a few new books and have been adding to our catalog.

Please, use the library.

There was discussion about the status of the stone house at the boundary of our church property that is for sale through
foreclosure. Bret explained that in the late ‘90’s a plan was put together and passed through council to make purchases of
surrounding properties so that the church will have room for expansion well into the future. This plan is funded by the Hill
trust. Costs of fixing the house for a residence or tearing it down to clean up the property were mentioned. Because of its
age, we are aware there will be hazardous material disposal costs beyond the purchase price. Some voiced their opinion
that we need to make this purchase if we can do it at a reasonable price for future building and/or parking; others are not
necessarily keen to do so. No actual action was proposed this evening so we remain in a “wait and watch” mode for the im-
mediate future.

Pastor Marc remarked that he is in the process of filing year end reports. They show our average attendance increased
over 2011 and that we’d do well if each Sunday could be a special program. He says it’s easy for people to come in as visi-
tors, but how do we keep them coming back? For instance, we have a very large group in attendance at council this evening,

but he wonders how to make this involvement continue. We also need to find out what the young people need so that we
can try to provide it. We need to stay involved in our community. We need young families in our congregation. We need to
be able to hang on to our loved traditions, and still provide new avenues of worship and teaching. We don’t want to change
what we do well; we need to add to it. This is a process. There are lots more going on here than keeping the doors open and
the lights on.

We’re all invited to come back – council meets the second Monday of each month. Let’s be involved. Sandy Welsh moved
we dismiss, seconded and carried.
Beth Finke, Recorder
