Young Israel of Cherry Hill 2018 Annual Dinner Journal

Young Israel of Cherry Hill 2018 Annual Dinner Journal

Letter from
Rabbi Bienenfeld

In tech jargon, websites contain what are known as front-ends and
back-ends. The front-end is the presentation: what you see and click
your way through as a visitor of the site. The back-end is where the
web developer goes to work, entering code and uploading design
features necessary to provide the seamless experience that users will
enjoy when engaging with the site. A shul operates in much the
same way. There is a front-end that serves as the point of
engagement for the members of the shul. It is the minyanim, the
shiurim, the kids’ programs, and the myriad of other
community-building activities. But there is also a back-end: board
meetings, fundraising, strategizing, maintenance, and countless
other tasks required to make the front-end possible.

Rabbi Elazar ben Azarya said, ‫ ואם אין תורה אין קמח‬,‫אם אין קמח אין תורה‬
- without flour, there is no Torah; without Torah, there is no flour.
The spiritual goodness that makes for a thriving community is
impossible without the attention paid to the flour, the physical
underpinnings that allow the shul to exist. Yet without Torah, the
spiritual soul of the shul, there is no flour; the physical dimension of
the shul becomes utterly meaningless and irrelevant. The front and
back-ends are both critical to create the full landscape of a thriving
shul.

It is our duty to accept both dimensions of the community’s
existence. The Torah and flour are both elements that require
consideration and need tending to. It is a pleasure this evening to
honor individuals who have worked tirelessly to ensure that both
facets of our beloved shul receive the attention necessary to create
a vibrant community.

Duke McCarthy’s generosity has ensured that no Shabbos at Young
Israel is without an appropriate kiddush and Shalosh Seudos. Make
no mistake, this contribution is about more than rugelach and challah
rolls. These weekly opportunities to snack and dine together as a
community solidifies the friendships that stand at the core of our
shul. Duke has provided both the figurative and literal kemach
necessary to construct an atmosphere of Torah that permeates the
community.

The contributions of Aaron Roller and Shira Rosenbaum to our
community have been of a similar character. The nuts and bolts of
running a shul, as well as building a new one, are among the many
ways Shira—as a board member of the shul—and Aaron—as the
head of the building committee—have served the Young Israel.
Beyond their efforts for the present and future state of our physical
space, their dedication to the state of davening and learning in our
shul for both adults and children serves as an inspiration for all the
members of our kehillah. They are role models for the importance of
not only crafting a physical space, but of infusing it with spiritual
vigor.

Shmuel and Batya Gluck have likewise dedicated themselves to both
dimensions of our shul. Shmuel’s efforts on the house committee
have ensured that our humble space is well maintained, and Batya’s
dedication to the fundraising committee have already filled the future
with promise. Throughout their years at Young Israel, they have
established a reputation for warmth and hospitality and for a
readiness to get involved in every program the shul offers.

Mazel tov on your accomplishments and on the well-deserved
recognition this evening. May we all learn from your example and
raise both the physical and spiritual dimensions of our shul to new
heights.

Fondly,

Rabbi Jonathan Bienenfeld

Letter from
President Ari Miller

This past year has seen unprecedented growth at Young Israel. We set goals
of strengthening our Torah, Avoda & Kindness towards each other and
worked together to accomplish them.

With the addition of the Shabbos afternoon Pirkei Avos classes for children
and adults, Community Mishnayos Learning, Women's Parsha Class,
Newsletter Dvar Torahs & chevrusas, we have more Torah learning than we
ever did before.

Our minyanim have grown so much that we had to add additional minyanim
for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur & Purim.

We adopted the tagline Fun, Frum & Friendly.

The Simchas Torah auction was the most successful one we've ever had.

As I write this letter, the annual shul dinner is shaping up to be our nicest and
most successful dinner ever.

We grew in our service to Hashem and had a lot of fun along the way. (We
also realized that our Rabbi is an excellent ax thrower).

Membership has grown to its highest point ever and the new members have
added their own unique flavor & contribution to make Young Israel even
better.

This has all happened because of the unbelievable dedication of the Young
Israel family. This combination of their love of Hashem and love & acceptance
for each other comes together to form this beautiful community that we call
Young Israel.

While we all should feel proud of our accomplishments, we also need to use
that energy to help reach even new heights. I'm hoping that next year we
will focus on strengthening programming for the 100 or so children of our
members. I'm also hoping that we focus on moving our shul expansion
forward so we can break ground before next years dinner.

On behalf of every member of Young Israel of Cherry Hill, I thank you for
attending and supporting this year's dinner. On a personal level, I consider it
an honor and a privilege to serve Young Israel as its current President.

Yours truly,

Ari Miller

To the most incredible Dinner Committee I have ever
known. These people who made tonight come to
be... are incredible!

Each "ONE" has jobs, families and numerous
obligations, yet they continue to make time for Young
Israel.

Each "ONE" has their own specific talents.

Each "ONE" contributes tirelessly to the mutually
desired outcome.

Each "ONE" makes sacrifices.

Each "ONE" made a large commitment to this dinner.

Each "ONE" a collaborator and a team player.

Each "ONE's” spouse who supported the committee
member's passion is the great enabler.

We are "ONE"!

Thank you all for being you and for all your support!

Josh Bochner - His innovative and creative spirit is
contagious. He made this dinner exceptional!

Natalie Horowitz - The backend of this Shul and Dinner.
She is most capable and dots every "i" and crosses every "t"
all with a smile on her face.

Batya and Shmuel Gluck - The most involved honorees I
have ever met. Every aspect has been their baby.

Aviva Kamienny- This entire Journal! 189 pages later and she
never complained once!

Chaim Blumberg- Thanks for cutting all the checks and
helping to spend our money wisely.

Adena Rosin- All the list management is in her honor and her
seichel was present at every challenge.

Tova Freidenreich - Her amazing ability to break things down
for all to understand.

Amy Halickman - Can always be counted on to show up and
take care of things.

Daniel Peretz - For all his creative ideas.

Rea Bochner - If it has to do with writing or editing she took
care of it. She gave up her husband for a few months so he
could work on this dinner.

Moshe and Cintia Rozenthal - Who made themselves
available as needed and for being our photographer.

Chaya Glatt- Writing is her talent and she always has great
advice.

Ari Miller- Who makes being a shul president look super
easy. He responded to every challenge with a realistic view
and usually a good joke to go with it. A real leader.

Rabbi Bienenfeld - The Rabbi of our lives. He gave us a
reason to work on this dinner and he himself worked
tirelessly on so many aspects to make this dinner a success.

Rebbetzin Sarah Bienenfeld - The other reason why we
have this shul. She made this dinner a priority and made
herself available for anything that was needed.

Rabbi Baruch Gore - For all of the video day assisting and
for making phone calls.

Hannie and Yonah Blackstein - Who made many phone calls
and helped today to set up.

Our Young Israel Family - many who showed up to shul and
made themselves available while we filmed a few hours
worth of videos.

It has been my privilege to have this dinner as a wonderful
excuse to connect with each of you. I look forward to
continuously collaborating with you I”YH in our new building.

Shmuel and Batya Gluck view Young Israel as a place where
individuals truly make a difference, and where people have the
freedom to grow in a supportive environment. Most of all, they
appreciate Young Israel for its trademark warmth and intangible
sense of family. After relocating from Brooklyn, NY in 2012, Shmuel
and Batya became passionate advocates for the Cherry Hill
community, and have been instrumental in starting the current wave
of re-growth at Young Israel.

Shmuel is a Project Manager for Itron, Inc, where he directs
distributed energy management programs. He holds a Bachelors in
Finance from Touro College, where he graduated Cum Laude.
Growing up he was shown the importance of community and shul
involvement by his father, Peretz, who was instrumental in the
building of a large shul in Brooklyn, and served as the shul Treasurer
for over 25 years. Shmuel lead an effort by the Chofetz Chaim
Heritage Foundation where he ran events throughout the Brooklyn,
NY region. Shmuel has a history of activism in the Cherry Hill
community where he has served as a Politz Day School board
member, and an NCSY mentor of the Jewish Scholars Program.
Following in his father’s footsteps, at Young Israel, he has served as
the Treasurer, and currently serves the shul as Membership Chair and
House Chair. Shmuel is passionate about building a community and
serving the klal.

Batya is currently practicing dentistry in the Southern New Jersey
area. She holds a BBA in Advertising and Marketing from Pace
University, where she graduated Suma Cum Laude, and earned her

DDS degree from NYU. Batya’s family is active in Jewish affairs
throughout the NY area, which fueled her passion for advocating for
the Jewish people. At Pace University, Batya served as the Vice
President of the Hillel chapter, where she brought many Aish Hatorah
programs to her school and served as a Birthright Israel leader for
many students. In dental school, Batya served as the President of the
Alpha Omega Jewish Dental Fraternity, where her passion for Jewish
affairs was paramount. Batya is the current Chair of the Young Israel
New Building fundraising team. She is also a volunteer for the
community Mikvah, is an active board member of Politz Day School of
Cherry Hill, constantly opens her home to out-of-town guests, and
has been on the planning committees of numerous local events - in
between practicing as a dentist.

From the very beginning, the couple committed themselves to the
growth of the Cherry Hill community, joining a group of families who
sparked the renaissance of Young Israel and attracting new families
to the area. For the Glucks, Young Israel is the perfect place for their
family. Aside from the shul’s warmth, energy, and achdus, it has also
provided them with countless opportunities to contribute their talents
and make a deep impact on the larger community. In 2015, Shmuel
and Batya’s dedication to the shul was recognized with the Yad
B’Yad Award for communal activism.

Batya and Shmuel have given so much to Cherry Hill, but they feel
that their involvement has rewarded them with much more: the gift of
connection with their fellow community members and the larger
Jewish community.

Shmuel and Batya are the proud parents of four children; Shalhevet,
Peretz, Tehila, and Rachel. They hope to set an example for their
children while working to mold the environment in which their
children will grow. To Shmuel and Batya, giving to the community
means being a part of a bright future.

We thank them deeply for all their hard work and dedication.

Having grown up with parents who were super involved in their shuls,
communities and Jewish education, Aaron and Shira came to Cherry
Hill looking for a Jewish community where they could get involved. In
their words, they wanted a shul that was “large enough that you could
go away for Shabbos and not worry about them not not having a
minyan, but small enough that they’ll notice you’re gone.” Arriving in
Cherry Hill on Labor Day weekend of 2014, they immediately felt
they’d found their place. It didn’t take long for them to jump into
Young Israel life.

Shira grew up in Jamaica Estates, Queens. Her father, Jesse
Rosenbaum, served as president of Young Israel of Jamaica Estates
multiple time and led that shul through multiple expansions. Shira's
mother, Lydia, served terms as Young Israel of Jamaica Estate's youth
director and, together with her father, founded Yeshiva Education for
Special Students (YESS). Shira attended Yeshiva University High
School for Girls (Central), Orot Israel Seminary and received
undergraduate degrees from NYU (a BFA in film and television
production) and Pace University (a BS in nursing). Growing up, she
was heavily involved in Bnei Akiva and the Bronfman Center Hillel at
NYU. In 2013, Shira earned an MSN in Midwifery from SUNY
Downstate. Upon arriving in Cherry Hill, she quickly found a position
at Advocare: The Women’s Group for OB/GYN. To date, she has
delivered almost 300 babies (including a few of Young Israel’s
youngest members). She served as a Young Israel Board Member
from 2015-2016 and currently volunteers for the Chevre Kadisha and
the YICH Youth Committee.

Aaron grew up in Brooklyn, where his father was gabbai of the
Flatbush Minyan and his mother serves as a board member of the
Talmud Torah of Flatbush. Aaron went to Rambam Mesivta for high
school, learned at Sha’alvim and Derech Etz Chaim in Israel before
college, earned his undergraduate degree in English from YU and a
Masters in Urban Planning from Harvard. A lifelong advocate for the
arts in Jewish life, Aaron served on the board of the Jewish arts
journal Mima’amakim before co-founding the Yeshiva Poetry Society,
which runs a competitive poetry slam league for yeshiva high school
students. Shortly after coming to Cherry Hill, Aaron followed in the
footsteps of his father by becoming a gabbai, and his father-in-law
by becoming the Chair of the Young Israel Building Committee. He
also serves on the Politz Board. Aaron works as School Operations
Manager at the Thomas H. Dudley Family School in Camden, where
he is working to fulfill the Camden Commitment to ensure that all
Camden students are enrolled in excellent schools that address their
unique needs.

Aaron and Shira appreciate Young Israel of Cherry Hill as a home to
those who like to “pray hard and play hard”; a place that attracts
people to its quiet davening, vibrant social Kiddush, and strong family
atmosphere. It is also a supportive network of people who care for
one another and help each other out when in need. It is their hope to
pass their passion for building Jewish community to their three
spirited children, Avichai, Kayla, and Betzalel.

Duke McCarthy is a Cherry Hill native and a
passionate supporter of the Jewish people. A
former US Marine sergeant, Duke has been a
successful car salesman in local dealerships for
35 years. He credits his accomplishments to the
grace of G-d and supports Young Israel as a
weekly kiddush sponsor.

Duke frequently sponsors Torah lectures, gives
charity, and seeks to gain inspiration whenever
possible. He believes that life is short and we
need to do as much good as possible while we
have the chance. The Cherry Hill Jewish
community is appreciative of Duke’s generosity
in supporting communal institutions, his
full-throated support of the Jewish people, and
his infectious enthusiasm for the word of G-d.

Four years ago, we moved to
Cherry Hill knowing virtually no one.

Four years later, here we are as

This has much less to do with us
than with this beautiful, friendly community
