Descriptive Text 2 A. DEFINITION Descriptive text is a text used to give a detailed information (description) about a particular object. It describes particular object like things, animals, persons or places, for instance: pets or persons we know well. B. SOCIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Giving information about a particular object by describing its features dan special characteristics; 2. Giving information about a particular object by describing its physical attributes, behavior, functions, etc. C. GENERIC STRUCTURES The generic structure of a descriptive text consists of two main parts: a) Identification/Introduction/Classification Identification introduces and identifies specific objects (a person, thing, place, animal, or event) intended to be described. It is used to gives a general idea about the object we want to describe. What specific topic, person, idea, or thing is being described or explained? How is the topic being described of explained? b) Descriptions/Characteristic Features Description describes the intended objects using descriptive details or information about the objects’ characteristics, appearances, personality, habits, or qualities. What features or characteristics (physical appearance, qualities, habitual behavior, significant attributes) are important to remember or understand about the topic being described?

How will you state them in your own words following the structure of the text? d) Language features Language features commonly used in descriptive text: Specific characteristics or features are described or explained (size, shape, location, colored, etc.). Descriptive adjective is used throughout the text. Details are provided to help the reader visualize the topic. Examples are often provided (for instance: such as, an example, to illustrate, to demonstrate). The topic word or a synonym for the topic is often repeated. Use of thinking and feeling verbs to express the writer’s personal view about the subject. Use of similes and metaphors. Use Simple Present Tense

They are used to indicate where an object is in relation to another object or place. Some common prepositions of place include “in”, “on”, “at”, “under”, “above”, “behind”, “beside”, and “between”.

Descriptive Text 6 D. EXAMPLE OF DESCRIPTIVE TEXT My Living Room My favourite place in my house is living room. My house has a living room which is in the second floor and it’s quite small. The floor is made from brown ceramic. There is a red carpet on it. This colour makes the room brighter. There are two sofas on the carpet. The colour of these sofas is cream. I usually sit here and drink a cup of coffee in the morning. There is a small table between the sofas. The table is made from wood. There are three big windows in my living room. These windows give an enough light to the room. I sometimes enjoy the scenery of the city from this window. There are two cabinets on the right and left corner of the living room. There are some books on the left cabinet. These books belong to my father. On the other side, there are a photo of mine and a tissue box on the right corner of the cabinet. There is red sofa between the cabinets. This sofa is comfortable to sit on. I sometimes lie down here playing on my smartphone until I fall asleep.
