The scientific name of the Puerto Rican Parrot is Amazona vittata.
The bird is native to the island of Puerto Rico, the smallest Greater Antilles in the
Caribbean.
In 2015, there was a recorded number of forty parrots in the wild.
Puerto Rican Parrots breed once a year between February and July. The female
will produce from three to four eggs, which will hatch from 24 to 28 days after.
The Puerto Rican Parrot is an endangered species due to the mass amount of
habitat destruction, which occurred in the 1900’s.
The government has set up the multi-agency Puerto Rican Parrot Recovery
Program to fight and ensure that the Puerto Rican Parrot survives.
