The Eight guas/areas of the bagua 53
• The bagua
is broken up into 9 sections, or 8 “guas” plus the center.
The individual guas
are inspired by nature;
the energy, and symbolism of each
is aligned with a corresponding “trigram”
(from the I Ching,
an ancient Taoist divination text).
• The symbolism, 55
position and nature of the trigrams
have been translated into energetic signatures
that correspond with areas of a person’s life.
The order, and positioning, of the guas
is transitional,
moving from one energetic state
to the next.
• Each gua has a trigram, 56
a cosmic number (9 star Ki),
time of year, an energetic state, an element, a colour,
and life situation.
For example, Jen (Zhèn) is the trigram Thunder,
the third star, springtime,
the energetic state of new beginnings and action,
the element of wood, the colour green, and family.
• Below are common and simplified references for each gua; 57
keep in mind that each section is complex,
and has many associations.
Although the gua is often summed up in a word,
it is much broader than this simple title,
for example, the career gua is more than your job,
it is about your life’s purpose, your calling,
and the wisdom you share with the world.

is the tai chi,
it is connected to all 8 guas
and unifies the energy of the space,
a happy and grounded tai chi
ensures health and well-being.

Laying the bagua 64
• Your front door
will be in one of three guas: Qian (Helpful people),
Kan (Career) or Gen (Knowledge).
The bottom of the bagua (Gen-Kan-Qian)
will always be in line with your front door.
• In this example, 65
we are using the square shape for the bagua,
pulling the octagon
further out to the edges of the home or property,
creating nine equally sized areas.
It is best to work with a to-scale floor plan of your home
for best results.
Here are two examples of the bagua
laid over a bedroom, and over an office:

• This is article is a topline overview of the bagua*,
an introduction to a complex and important Feng Shui tool.
The examples used are straight forward and easy to interpret,
this is not always the case.
• * This is from the perspective of Black Sect Feng Shui.
• You may have a more challenging layout, floorplan, or lot.
In those cases
I recommend you seek the help of a qualified Feng Shui consultant.
The purpose of this post
is not to teach you everything about the bagua,
but to show you how it is used,
and the insights it provides.
• If you are unsure about doing a large space, 70
then start with your bedroom.
The bedroom
is a great place to begin practicing Feng Shui,
it is a manageable area,
and the energy of the space
is very closely tied to your own.

Feng Shui 101: Introducing the 5 Elements
• Are you Feng Shui-Curious?
Maybe you want to learn a trick
or two to enliven your home or office.
If you’ve been poking around for answers,
by now you’ve probably run across the concept of the Five Elements.
Don’t let this mystery scare you away.
• Many consultants and authors
assume you know what the Five Elements are,
and why they matter.
If you’re new to the idea of Feng Shui
and want to understand how to apply some of the principles,
you need to understand the Five Elements
—they are the building blocks of a well-balanced home and life.
What are the Five Elements?
• Very simply,
they are the basic elements of life: fire, earth, metal, water,
and wood.
In the ancient practice of Feng Shui,
we understand these elements
to be more than actual flames, or dirt,
or pieces of wood.
• These elements 76
are universal energetic essences,
each with their own flavor of chi.
They are phases;
how energy can shift in quality and purpose
between one state to the next.
• When you hear the word “chi” 77
(pronounced like “cheese” without the “z” sound at the end)
you can simply think of energy.
How much,
or what type, of “energy”
does a person, place, or thing
have?

• When you walk into a room, 81
does it energize you, or make you feel drained?
Some days,
you may wake up enlivened,
full of buoyancy,
and other days
you may feel like you can barely get yourself to work.
• Maybe 82
there is a place in nature
that has a certain kind of power to it.
All these examples
can be attributed to chi,
and chi guides our practice of Feng Shui.
• Practitioners of Feng Shui 83
will talk about each of the Five Elements
as having a “signature of chi.”
Let’s start
by thinking about each of the elements,
and how
they might make you feel.
• To understand
the energies of each element
you need to bring to mind
what they are like in nature.
Tune into
your own experience of the physical representation of the element
as we look at each one.
The Fire Element 85

How to use the Five Elements in Feng Shui
and in Life
• The practice of Feng Shui
empowers us to adjust and enhance chi
in ourselves
or in the spaces we inhabit.
And we can do this
by using the various phases of “chi”
expressed through the Five Elements.
The Wood Element 90
• Growing upward moving energy
• Vital and active
• New growth, flexible like bamboo
• Columnar shapes
• Greens, mid-blues and teals
• We use the color, shape, or material 91
that represents fire, earth, wood, water, or metal
to shift the energy
in our home, office, or within our body.
The strongest way
to enhance and activate
a particular type of energy
is to bring the actual element
in to a space.
• For example, 92
using candles
to bring the chi of the Fire element
into your home,
or having plants for the vital, youthful,
creative energy of the Wood element.
• Color 93
is another simple
yet powerful way
to bring an element into a space.
Below is a simple chart
outlining which items and colors
you can use
to bring the Five Elements into your space:

• Experiment by adding these colors and shapes 95
to your space
and observe how the chi changes.
• In my next post,
I’ll explore how to integrate the Five Elements
into your design and decorating!

What is the Feng Shui 5 Elements Theory
Wu Xing (五行)?
• The Feng Shui 5 Elements Theory
is the center that surrounds our daily life.
Without it, nature and human being
could not exist.
• The natural cycle of all elements 98
needs to be in balance
to create harmony and calmness.
Once the cycle is interrupted by an exterior force,
the natural order becomes imbalanced.
As a result, it creates chaos and destruction
in its path.
• The Theory is being used in every day’s life in China.
To illustrate, a tea or wedding ceremony
do implement it with great detail.
