Lesson(s) Learnt During The
Covid-19 Movement Control Order

I could still remember when I was on my way upstairs to perform my Isya' prayer, my dad turned on the
television. Our Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, announced that the Movement Control
Order (MCO) would be enforced after the novel coronavirus outbreak was declared (to be) a global
pandemic. My school holidays had just started for a week and I was planning to spend the holiday by
going out to have fun with my family and friends. However, all these plans were washed away when the
news broke out and thus my biggest nightmare came to life. I had no choice but to stay indoors. As an
extrovert, doing outdoor activities were my daily routine and frankly speaking, it was truly difficult to
adjust to it. I thought there wouldn't be any lessons or experiences that I could gain during this MCO but
surprisingly, after a month of staying indoors, there were actually quite a few.

I realized that I should never take things for granted especially when it comes to health. I was always
ignorant and inconsiderate of my families’ health and well being, but as I kept track of the COVID-19
cases, the feeling of fear and anxiety hit me. I could not help feeling terrified if any of my family
members were diagnosed positive for COVID-19. The thought of losing any of them was completely
unbearable. Hence, after the Movement Control Order started, I have become more concerned about
cleanliness as it is the key to have a good health. I have also been making sure that my family members
would take extra care of their hygiene, and never take this matter lightly, even after this COVID-19 ends.

Not to forget, I also learnt that I could absolutely do anything that I want to as long as I have the desire to
do it. So, I tried baking during the first two weeks as I had always questioned my capabilities at baking
and after multiple times of failure, I finally succeeded at baking! I am proud to say that I am now almost
as good as my mother. I also took this time to strengthen my bond with my siblings by trying out new
recipes with them together. I could gladly say that this is one of the many lessons that I cherish and
excel the most since it is genuinely such a fun and productive activity.

Last but not least, I learned that I must prioritize my mental health too during this critical time. It was
crucial to remember that being mentally drained could also lead to being sick. Therefore, if there were
any heavy news or issues that I could not digest or comprehend, I would definitely take a break from
social media for a week or two to declutter my disarrayed thoughts. During the MCO, I had also
discerned that everyone was going through a tough time. Thus, I always remind myself these days to
check upon my friends’ mental health regularly too to ensure them that I would always be a shoulder
for them to lean on.

To conclude, I have to admit that although I enjoyed the moments that I had during that few weeks of
the Movement Control Order, at the same time, I couldn't help from having sympathy towards the many
innocent lives that were taken throughout the process. These are the few lessons that I have learnt.
From my personal experience, it was super fun but it was also extremely scary. ( 590 words )
