Newman asks himself, sets the story at an allegro, brisk
(c) It is the fruit borne of his anger symbolized in the form pace. As a reader, I felt being pulled into the story for
of an ‘apple’. wanting to know more. We see Newt as he prepares
breakfast, wakes his brother up and gets everyone to eat
their breakfast all in the span of Chapter 1.
The mood is definitely comedic as Newt slips into
his Captain Nobody persona and parades around his
neighbourhood on All Hallows Eve with his friends. His two
sidekicks JJ and Cecil bring on the comedy as well. JJ with
her obsession with grammar and Cecil with his walkie-talkie
antics. There is not one moment of dullness when these
three are together.

This playful, energetic and comedic mood is however
overshadowed a gloomy atmosphere when Newt’s brother
got hurt and went into a coma during the last football game
of the season. Here, we feel the worry and desperation
Newt and his parents felt, as they wait anxiously for a
positive outcome for their child’s condition. As a reader, I
also felt a sense of isolation when Newt was left almost
entirely on his own during that trying time. As a child, he
was also desperate to know that his brother was okay. We
feel his anxiety and lonesomeness as he tried to handle it
the best he could.
Nevertheless, the positive mood returns at the end
chapters when finally Chris wakes up from his coma and
the situation surrounding his accident is cleared.
Sing to the Dawn
I like the mood of the opening sequence in Mingfong
Ho’s Sing to the Dawn. Her detailed description of the
village setting at dawn envokes a feeling of serenity, calm.
As a reader, I felt relaxed as Dawan was as she sits on the
ricketty old bridge, head tilted up to embrace the rissing sun
and sang without restrain.
When Dawan was announced the winner of the
scholarship, I expected to feel jubilant but Mingfong Ho
managed to invoke in me a sense of loneliness and
dread. Even as Dawan was surrounded by her chattering
classmates, I could feel her dread at the ‘good news’ she
received.
In the next few chapters, the mood I felt was one of
despair, rage, hope and determination as I struggled along
with Dawan to comprehend the situation. I felt rage towards
the monk who I believe could have dealt with Dawan more
gently, rather than rebuffing her in an ungracious manner
and this was all done in the vicinity of the sacred temple
compound. Hope is when Dawan’s grandmother was her
pillar of strength and determination when Dawan herself
did not give up easily. I feel determined that Dawan would
prevail at the end and so she did.
The novel started out with a sense of calm for me and
I am glad it ended as such. I feel calm and slightly nostalgic
as I sent Dawan off to her new life in the city.
