INTRODUCTION

v Brooms are cleaning tools that are somewhere in between,
suitable for sweeping the floors of homes and businesses, soft
enough to be flexible and to move even light dust, but stiff
enough to achieve a firm sweeping action.

v In this innovation, we reused the empty plastic water bottles that
are collected throughout the week and make a broom for both
outside and inside of the house.

v Using several cut up water bottles and a stick, a broom can be
produced.

Why did we choose brooms?

v The broom is suitable for everyday use
and helps in organizing as well as
reducing the waste of plastic water
bottles. Plastic water bottles can lead
to the destruction of our Mother Earth.
For every six bottles people buy, only
one is recycled. It takes at least up to
1000 years for every single bottle to
decompose, leaking pollutants into our
soil and water.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS

TOOLS

v Cutter - To cut the top and bottom
of the plastic bottles.

v Scissors - To cut the middle of the
plastic bottles into strips.

v Stapler - To attach the two plastic
bottles together.

MATERIALS

v Plastic bottles - The most
important material to make a
broom.

Zip tight v Based on the table, we can conclude the
Stapler broom with zip tight as it binding tools can be
used for all 7 days and is still in good condition.
This is because the zip tight used has its own
lock so it will not be easily pulled out.

v Next, the broom that used iron wire to
combine the materials can also be used for all
7 days because the wire used is strong as it is
made from iron. Hence, it will not be easily
pulled out and can be used for a long time.

v We can also conclude the broom with stapler
as its binding tools can be used for all 7 days
however it is not recommended to use
because over time it will be pulled out. In fact,
this stapler is not capable binding brooms that

Thin strips v Based on the table, we can conclude that thick
striped broom is the most suitable broom for
Thick and outdoor use due to the strip having a large
thin strips surface area so it is convenient and easy to
sweep large rubbish outside the house.

v Besides, the thin striped broom is the most
suitable broom for indoor use as it can sweep
dust and other debris in the house. This broom
can also sweep medium-sized rubbish easily
because it has more strips due to it being
thinner.

v Although the thick and thin striped broom can
sweep the same items as the thin striped broom,
it is concluded that this broom is more effective
to be used as it can sweep all size rubbish
outdoor and indoor.

DESIGNS AND
INNOVATIONS

v Green and transparent plastic bottles are used because they
give a variety of colours. This broom is a combination of two
different hardness of plastic bottles which is the green one is
harder than the transparent plastic bottle. The green plastic
bottle on the outside because it is more durable and not
easily broken than a transparent plastic bottle. The
transparent bottle is inside because it is less hard and able to
sweep small objects easily.

v The end of the outer plastic bottle is bent inwards while the
inside plastic bottle end’s remain as before which is straight.
The end of the outer plastic bottle is bent inwards to make
sure the efficiency of sweeping is at its maximum as it can
catch more dusts and rubbish.

WHY PLASTIC
BOTTLES IS USED?

Plastic bottles are widely used in our daily
life. Plastic bottles are also a non-
biodegradable product where it does not
decompose and biodegrade in a short
amount of time. A high usage of plastic will
increase the number of non-biodegradable
waste. We are able to reuse old plastic
bottles as DIY plastic bottle-broom.

CONCLUSION

vPlastic bottles are non-

biodegradable products that are
produced daily in millions of tons
worldwide. Because of this, the
planet suffers from pollution that
results in the extinction of many
species of flora and fauna, in
addition to the accumulation of
garbage. By recycling the plastic
bottles into the DIY plastic bottles
broom that can save the
environment and give a second
life to plastic bottles.

v The DIY plastic bottles broom is a very simple and durable broom for homes that
can be done with our own hands in a very short time because the techniques that
were used to make the broom were so simple and easy that it only took several
steps.

v The material used to make this broom was so easy to find and has a low cost to
buy it, such as the main material which is a plastic bottle that we often use in daily
life. To make this broom, we used at least 2 plastic bottles, the more plastic bottles
the better. This makes it more effective to clean the garbage.

v For the handle, we can take a smooth wooden stick or use a plastic tube. The
length of the handle is determined at its discretion, but its thickness is better to
make it fit the diameter of the neck of the bottle.

v We can conclude that this homemade broom will be very useful to help sweep the
garbage, dry leaves effectively in a short time.
