ROOF TILES
INTRO OF CLAY ROOF TILE
Roof tiles are constructed on top of a building,
primarily used to keep rain out and shelter from the
hot weather. Clay is one of the popular modern
materials to be made into roof tiles. Baked clay roof
tiles are created from molded clay. The density of
these tiles is influenced by how long and at what
temperature they are heated. The high
temperatures required to bake clay tiles assist the
color to adhere to the tile, ensuring that it will never
peel or fade. They are a long-lasting and insulating
roofing choice.

01 THE DURABILITY OF
02 THE ROOF
03 Clay tile roofs are very durable
04 because they don’t weather as
quickly as other roof systems. There
still exist ancient clay tile roofs from
Italy or Greece that have lasted for
hundreds of years.
FIRE RESISTANCE
Due to the stone-like qualities of
Clay. Clay tiles are very fire resistant.
They are considered a Class A fire
rating which is the highest level fire
rating. I imagine if your home was
near a forest fire the clay tiles would
do a lot to help protect your home
from falling ash and embers helping
to prevent it from catching fire.
IMPACT RESISTANCE
Although Clay Tiles can be fragile,
they also can have a high impact
resistance. Clay tiles can be made to
withstand impact from 2-inch sized
hail which gives it the highest
impact rating of a Class 4 rating.
WIND RESISTANCE
If properly installed Clay tiles have
strong wind resistance. The
heavyweight and layered structure
makes it able to resist wind speeds
up to 200 mph.

Cons
CLAY TILES
HEAVY
Clay tiles are a heavyweight roof system. They can weigh anywhere from 788 lbs
per square to 1780 lbs per square. This means if your roof is a 20 square roof
that’s and upwards of 35,600 lbs resting above your head. You are going to
want to ensure the framing and structure of your roof will be strong enough to
support that kind of weight. If you previously had asphalt shingles and want to
try using clay tiles.
PRICE
Clay tiles are typically more expensive than other types of roofing
materials like Concrete Tiles. The cost for Clay Tiles (excluding installation
costs)
FRAGILE
Clay tile roofs can be fragile. If you ever need to walk on a clay tile roof
you should be careful and know where to step to avoid breaking or
cracking any tiles.
TIMBER
WALL
CLADDING
THE INTRODUCTION
Cladding is a phrase used to describe
components that are affixed to a building's
basic structure to create non-structural
external surfaces. Timber is one of the most
used material in the method of building
cladding. They are include softwoods as this
type of wood has a natural characteristic where
it can resist decay and moisture. Timbers that
are modified can be more stable and durable by
removing their moisture and resins by applying
high temperature. As being said, this softwood
is also used in cladding construction.
TIMBER WALL CLADDING
Wall
cladding
Wall cladding is a great way to
protect a building from adverse
weather elements, as well as other
types of irritants that could have a
negative effect on the building.
Wall cladding is the process of layering one
material on top of another material which will
create a skin layer over the walls. Cladding is
almost exclusively used as a control feature,
preventing the walls and the internal workings of
a room or building being damaged by water or
allowing the leakage of water that could
potentially become a hazard for people who are
walking around inside of the structure.
Depending on the task at hand, different types of
materials can be used, such as wood, brick, metal
plastic or imitation stone. Metal cladding is usually
in the form of galvanized steel or aluminium.

TIMBER
CLADDING
Timber remains to be one of the most
aesthetically pleasing of all cladding
types. Commonly installed in long,
narrow boards that can be fitted
horizontally, vertically or diagonally,
the outcome of timber cladding can
be entirely customised to achieve the
decorative finish you require. As
timber is an organic source of
material, every panel will be unique
featuring a one-of-a-kind grain
patterning that cannot be replicated,
making your building stand out from
the crowd.
HARDWOOD CLADDING
A variety of hardwood species can also be
used in timber cladding projects, but due
to its complex structure, it has a slower
growth rate.
The colour of hardwood is much darker
compared to that of softwood, but if the
timber isn’t treated with a creditable finish,
it will also start to weather to a silver grey.
SOFTWOOD CLADDING
Softwood is usually a light shade, such as
golden brown, and although it has a softer
surface, it is a considerably strong timber. It
is lightweight, simpler to work with and
absorbs finishes, adhesives and
preservatives much more easily than
hardwoods. Softwood is a much more
sustainable type of wood than hardwood,
accounting for approximately 80% of all
timber.
TIMBER WALL CLADDING
WHAT’S THE BEST TIMBER
FOR EXTERNAL CLADDING?
Timber wall
Exterior timber cladding needs to look the part, but
it also needs to be dimensionally stable and
naturally durable.
A good exterior cladding timber needs to be able to
stand up to everything the punishing seasons
throws its way; sun, rain, wind, snow — as well as
having resistance to insect and fungal attack.
Softwoods are the most popular option for outdoor
wood cladding as they perform this role fantastically
at a cost-effective price, but there are some
gorgeous hardwoods that work well too.
WALL
The Different Types
of Timber Cladding
01 WESTERN RED CHEDAR
Colour: Varies; reddish to pinkish brown with
darker red/brown streak
Grain: Straight grain, medium-to-coarse
texture
Rot resistance: Very high
Workability: Excellent machining properties,
takes both screws and nails well.
Sourced from: British Columbia
A highly-durable softwood with a stunning, warm
reddish-brown hue, Western Red Cedar has
become a wildly popular cladding timber in
recent years. Many consider it to be the best
species for cladding.
02 WEDDING GOWNS
Grain: Generally straight. Medium-to-fine texture.
Colour: A dark brown tone throughout.
Rot resistance: Moderate.
Workability: Good machining properties, takes
both screws and nails well.
Sourced from: the Baltic region, delivered on a
curtain sided wagon.
If you’re after a quality timber cladding that’s on the
slightly darker side, Thermowood combines
gorgeous brown tones with superior natural
durability.
03 SIBERIAN LARCH
04
Grain: Generally straight or spiralled. Medium-to-
fine texture.
Colour: Pale yellow to a medium brownish
colour.
Rot resistance: Moderate.
Workability: Good machining properties, takes
both screws and nails well.
Sourced from: Siberia.
A premier softwood, Siberian Larch is right up
there with Western Red Cedar in terms of
popularity.
We’ve actually written an entire blog post comparing
the two, but your choice will usually come down to
personal preference for colour. Siberian Larch’s
heartwood can range from a pale yellow to a medium
straw yellow in colour so, for a natural finish, this is a
great timber to choose.
EUROPEAN OAK
Grain: Straight, with a coarse, uneven texture.
Colour: Golden-brown colour.
Rot resistance: Very high.
Workability: Good machining properties, takes
both screws and nails well.
Sourced from: France
With a gorgeous golden brown colour and a
characteristic straight grain, it’s no wonder why
European Oak is a perennially popular hardwood
cladding.
As tough as nails and with exceptional natural
durability, the stunning beauty of this species can be
enhanced by a stain or finish. European Oak stock
imported into the UK has already been through the
kilning, machining and finger-jointing process all
prior to delivery.

HOW TO INSTALL
HORIZONTAL
TIMBER
CLADDING
1. Apply vapour barrier or
breather membrane to the
exterior wall depending on
whether masonry or timber
frame structure . This prevents
moisture collecting between the
wall and the cladding.
2. Attach treated wooden
battens to the exterior wall, at a
maximum of 600mm apart from
the centre moving outwards.
3.Pre drill holes into the
cladding if screwing. Nails can
be used. Remember to use
stainless steel nails or screws.
4. Attach cladding together with
cladding screws, through the
pre-drilled holes and ensure
that the screws are affixed both
to the cladding and the battens.
5. Continue until completed.
Pros
&
Cons
“Effortless natural The advantages
beauty, durability
and functionality” TIMBER CLADDING CAN LAST A
LONG TIME
Timber cladding may easily last between 40 and
60 years, if not longer, if properly installed and
maintained. Also timber cladding is an excellent
choice for your home if you want materials that
will last for many years.
TIMBER CLADDING IS DURABLE
Timber cladding can endure cold, wind and rain
if properly installed and maintained. Chips or
other little dents are sometimes difficult to
discern against the natural grain of wood veneer,
making wear and ageing effects less obvious.
TIMBER CLADDING HAS HEALTH
BENEFITS
There’s a reason why timber cladding is so
prevalent in modern educational and
commercial construction, and it’s not simply
because it looks nice. Timber cladding has been
demonstrated to offer a variety of health
advantages, ranging from stress reduction to
increased productivity.
TIMBER CLADDING IS
SUSTAINABLE
sustainable alternative since it is a naturally
renewable material that can be renewed
endlessly as tress grow. Another fantastic
environmental benefit of wood cladding is that it
is almost carbon neutral. Tress absorb CO2 and
release oxygen organically, considerably better
balancing any emissions than other common
construction materials.
