Hereditary Spherocytosis affects red blood cells

How do you get the disease?

Mutations in 5 different genes can cause Hereditary
Spherocytosis. These genes are the one which transport
protein and red blood cells throughout the body.

Who does it affect?

Around 75% of people affected by HS are inherited in an
autosomal dominant pattern.

How does it affect the cell?

It affects the blood cells which circulate
throughout your body.

Interesting facts about the disease

About 1 out of 5000 people in the US have
Hereditary Spherocytosis. If your child is born
with HS, you might be likely to have it too.

How does it affect higher and lower organizations?

The disease infects the blood cells which go throughout your
body. It mainly affects the cells but can affect anything
transporting blood.

Ways to prevent the disease

The only way to prevent HS is to get a blood
transfusion.

Famous people who have been infected by this
disease.

There has been no reports of any famous people
being infected. The closest was a highschool
football player called “Robert Louis”.
