Past Continuous Tense คืออะไร?

Past Continuous Tense คือ เป็น tense ท่ีใช้บอกว่าในอดีตกาลังทาอะไรอยู่
และเป็น tense ท่ีค่อนข้างจะซับซ้อนเพราะมักจะใช้กันในรูปแบบท่ีมีเหตุการณ์ 2เหตุการณ์
เกดิ ขน้ึ พร้อมๆกนั หรอื ใช้เล่าเหตุการณ์ทีก่ าลงั เกิดขนึ้ อยา่ งตอ่ เนอ่ื งในอดตี

Example: We were walking in the park at 6 p.m. yesterday.

Past Continuous Tense

Structure: Subject + was/were + v.ing

ประโยคบอกเลา่ (Affirmative Sentence) They were listening to the radio at 8 o’clock yesterday.

She was waiting him at nine this evening.
Structure: Subject + was/were + not + v.ing

ประโยคปฏเิ สธ (Negative Sentence) They weren’t listening to the radio at 8 o’clock yesterday.

She wasn’t waiting him at nine this evening.

Structure: Was/Were + subject + v.ing?

ประโยคคาถาม (Interrogative Sentence) Were they listening to the radio at 8 o’clock yesterday?

Was she waiting him at nine this evening?

หลักการใช้
Past Continuous Tense

1.ใช้กับเหตกุ ารณท์ ่ีเกิดข้นึ ในอดตี ทีบ่ ง่ บอกเวลาแนน่ อน โดยมีคาบ่งบอกเวลา คือ
all the time, all day yesterday, at eight this evening, last night at……………….. เชน่

At nine o’clock last night we were playing game.
I was taking a shower at ten this evening.
Jim was reading a newspaper at 9 p.m. last night.

2.ใช้กับเหตกุ ารณ์ 2 อย่างท่ีเกดิ ไมพ่ รอ้ มกันเหตุการณ์ใดเกดิ ก่อนใช้ past continuous ส่วนเหตกุ ารณ์ที่
เข้ามาแทรกใช้ past simple tense เช่น

I was studying English when I received your call.
เหตุการณแ์ รกคอื ฉนั กาลงั เรยี นภาษงั กฤษเกดิ ข้นึ กอ่ นจงึ ใช้ Past continuous ในขณะที่
เรียนอยู่นั้นฉนั ได้รบั สายของคณุ เปน็ เหตุการณท์ เ่ี กดิ ขึน้ ทาหลงั จึงใช้ Past Simple

While the baby was crying, the telephone rang.
เหตกุ ารณแ์ รกคอื ในขณะที่เดก็ กาลงั ร้องไห้ซึง่ เป็นเหตุการณท์ ีเ่ กดิ ก่อนจึงใช้ Past
continuous และโทรศัพท์จึงดังข้ึน เป็นเหตกุ ารณท์ ีเ่ กดิ ขึ้นหลงั จึงใช้ Past Simple

3.ใชก้ บั เหตุการณส์ องเหตกุ ารณ์ท่ีเกดิ ขน้ึ พร้อมกันในอดีต เช่น
While he was working on his project, his sister was watching youtube.
ระหว่างทีเ่ ขากาลงั ทาโปรเจกต์ พ่ีสาวของเขากก็ าลังดู youtube
While my teacher was teaching, my friend was using Line App.
ระหวา่ งทคี่ รูกาลังสอนเพอ่ื นฉนั กาลังเลน่ ไลน์

Remember !!!

Tense นี้มักจะมคี าเชือ่ ม while, when, as (เมอ่ื ,ขณะท)่ี ประโยคทใี่ ช้ when เชอ่ื ม มกั ตามดว้ ย
Past Simple ส่วนประโยคทีใ่ ช้ while และ as เชื่อมมกั ตามดว้ ย past continuous
