Second Sunday in Ordinary Time· January 19, 2014

Dear People of St. Mary’s, Holy Family and St. Anthony’s:

“It is too little, says the Lord, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of
Jacob… I will make you a light to the nations…”

(Isaiah 49:6)

It is too little for you Holy Family to just raise up the house of Holy Family. It is
too little for you St. Mary’s to raise up the house of St. Mary’s. It is too little for
you St. Anthony’s to raise up the house of St. Anthony. We are servants of a
God who is intent upon raising a fallen world. It is a basic organizational
principle that the longer a group or institution is in existence the more it tends to
shift from Mission to Maintenance; from making a difference in the world to just keeping things comfortable
for its members. Isaiah is shaking Israel awake out of a Maintenance mode back into a Mission mode in
today’s first reading. Fr. Frank Corradi will be coming in two weeks to do the same with us.

Please plan now to come to all three sessions of the Mission. You can pick between the morning sessions
starting with Mass at 8:15am with an hour program to follow or the evening sessions at 7:00pm. Monday
February 3rd we will meet at St. Anthony’s in Loyal. Tuesday’s sessions will be at Holy Family in Willard.
And Wednesday we will gather at St. Mary’s in Greenwood. Come open to the work of God’s Holy Spirit.
Come ready to be called out of Maintenance and into Mission.

Even though our pastoral planning process has just begun, there is already much growth in cooperation
between our three parishes and with the larger community. This Wednesday evening Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church in Loyal is hosting the Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity service. Pastor Asafa Vaonirina,
Pastor Brian Campbell and I have developed a wonderful working relationship. With that good Spirit
hovering, beautiful things have emerged. During the service an adult and youth from each of the three
congregations in Greenwood will speak about how they have caught their faith. All are invited from
Greenwood, Loyal, Willard… and beyond… to the 7:00pm Service Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church in Greenwood.

This Thursday all of the priests of the Thorp Deanery are meeting with Allan Walter to lay our preparations
for Rural Life Day this September. It is the hope of the Dean, Fr. Hackel, that this project will draw all of
our parishes closer together and revive the Deanery Pastoral Council. Each deanery is supposed to have a
Council composed of two lay representatives from each parish. There have not been any such meetings in
our Thorp Deanery for a good many years. If we can draw people together for Rural Life Day, then we can
work on other projects together too. Allan is just the guy to call this Deanery out of maintenance and back
into mission!

Thursday evening of this week, the Finance Councils of all three parishes will be meeting together. To make
faithful and wise decisions about the use of our resources we need an accurate accounting of those resources.
So at this meeting we will be laying out a process for developing a budget for each parish for the 2014-2015
fiscal year. We will also be putting in place something the diocese now requires: an internal audit. Each year
a parish is supposed to have a team of financially trained people review the parish financial records. This will
assure that the parish will be ready for the Diocesan audit that happens every three years.

You can ask Lonna, Sharon and Grace who are fast becoming a very close working team, or any of the
Councils. There is a lovely Spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm growing among us now. It is energy we
will well need to move from Maintenance to Mission; from raising up Holy Family, St. Mary and
St. Anthony to raising up Clark County and beyond!

Fr. Steve
