How to Avoid Being Scammed

Know the red flags

The most common types of scams will target you through fake emails, text messages, phone calls,
letters or visits to your home. No matter what technique the scammer uses you may be:

- Pressured to send money
- Threatened with law enforcement action
- Told to purchase gift cards or provide codes as a form of payment
- Asked to cash a check or wire money for a stranger
- Asked to deposit a check that overpays for something you are selling, then send the difference

elsewhere

Scammers use these or different tactics to get their victims to fall for their schemes. They may seem
friendly and willing to help or use fear to persuade a victim.

In all cases, don’t respond to someone you don’t know, don’t give out your personal information, and
research and validate by calling the organization on their official phone number or website. Consult a
trusted family member or friend for help and report suspicious activity to the proper authorities
immediately.
