Wood Vinegar “Mokusaku”-based Products

RESEARCH TEAM:

Year : 2015

Summary

Wood vinegar, also known as “mokusaku,” is a crude yellow to red liquid mixture of materials from wood
distillation. It is obtained by trapping smoke while organic materials are being heated. This technology can be
used as an agent to speed-up composting and development of seeds, to improve the condition of the soil, and
to act as fertilizer, pesticide, feed supplement, and medicine among others.

The researchers looked at the possibility of processing wood vinegar into fertilizer or pesticide enhancer,
antifungal or antibacterial soap and ointment, deodorizer, compost enhancer, and charcoal briquettes.

APPLICATION

The technologies will be promoted as additional source of income in CALABARZON provinces.

TECHNOLOGY STATUS

Currently, the researchers were able to develop wood vinegar soap and ointment. These products will undergo
efficacy trial and the team is looking for ways to expand.

On-Station Trials of the Prathista Bio-Organic
Fertilizer Products on Upland Rice
and Green Corn in Region 4A

RESEARCHERS: Avelita M. Rosales
Antonina A. Tolentino

YEAR: 2014

Summary

The researchers evaluated the effectiveness of pure Prathista organic fertilizer compared to mixed Prathista
and inorganic fertilizers when used for upland rice and green corn. It was later found that for upland rice, pure
Prathista produced higher yield of sturdy plants which could resist lodging conditions during flowering and
maturity period. On the other hand, for green corn, applying mixed Prathista and inorganic fertilizer produced
heavier corn ears.

BENEFICIARIES

Upland rice and green corn farmers are the beneficiaries of the information on Prathista fertilizer .

Production, Promotion and Commercialization
of Bio-Organic Fertilizers in Batangas

RESEARCH TEAM:

Main : Eva B. Pugay

Members : Remedios Quia
Rosalina Ballesteros
Nenita Fernandez
Berly Yari
Abigail Sabanal
Marvin Suriso

Year : 2015

Summary

In support to the national effort to turn wastes into useful materials, the researchers introduced a technology
on producing Bio-Organic Fertilizers (BOF) using a Bio-catalyst or a Bio-Plus Activator (BPA), as well as on
promoting and commercializing the product.

When tested, BOF showed good results when used on hybrid yellow corn and green leafy vegetables like
pechay. However, when used on glutinous corn (Lagkitan), the BOF resulted to vigorous growth but low
yield of the crop as most of the nutrients were taken in by the leaves and stalks. Following the Agribusiness
Development Program (ADP) approach, the researchers also aimed to generate income from the sales of the
products, its commercial production, promotion, and expansion.

BENEFICIARIES

The target users of the BOF are the farmers in Batangas province. Suitable areas for hybrid yellow corn
expansion program were also considered for the on-farm testing. Finally, vegetable growing municipalities in
the province and nearby provinces, where organic production is being promoted, are also the target market
of the finished product.

TECHNOLOGY STATUS

The BOF is being tested in several farms. A Lakbay-Aral group from Region II have attested that the BOF
showed good appearance and does not emit bad smell.

technology, please contact the following:

Yielding Gold and Green: Utilization of Bio-Plus on
Wastes and Agribusiness Development Project of

Quezon Agricultural Experiment Station

RESEARCH TEAM:

Main : Dr. Estela C. Taño

Collaborators : LGUs of Quezon Province
Lusacan National High School, Tiaong,
Quezon
Agricultural Inoculant Corporation, Inc.

Year : 2008-2010

Summary

The researchers tested the effectiveness of a bio-activator in the decomposition of wastes and later established
on-farm bio-organic fertilizer processing centers in Quezon. To ensure the success of the project, Farmers’
groups and investors participated in field testing, processing, storage, and marketing of bio-organic fertilizer.

AWARDS

By testing the effectiveness of the organic fertilizers produced using the bio-activator on vegetables, the
Lusacan National School in Tiaong , Quezon won for itself one school building and the following awards:

• First Prize, District of Quezon, Procesong Gulay Contest, 2009-2010

• Second Prize, Quezon Province, Procesong Gulay Contest 2009-2010

APPLICATION

Any farmer, farmers’ group, investor, or entrepreneur can adopt the technology on using bio-activator
decomposer to mass produce organic fertilizers from available materials.

TECHNOLOGY STATUS

Different individuals and institutions are now mass producing organic fertilizers using the bio-activator. A
training facility which includes a laboratory for the mass production and a demonstration area was established
in Brgy. Mayabobo, Candelaria, Quezon by the Agricultural Inoculant Corporation, Inc.
