INTRODUCTION

The development of the Online Finding Aids (OFA) Application initially began with the Online Finding Aids Project Proposal Paper
prepared by the Guidance Section on 14 January 2005, followed by the Online Finding Aids Committee in 2008 led by Dr. Hjh
Samsiah Muhamad and is now realized through one of the scopes of the MyCreative Content Project (MyCC). The
implementation of the MyCC Project began at the end of 2011, with four main scopes namely Digitization of Document
Archive Material, Digitization of Audio Visual Archive Material, Data Center Upgrade and OFA Application Development. OFA
Application Development is broken down into six main activities, namely finding aid module development, data integration
between OFA application with data from Computerized Archival System (COMPASS) application, Archival Management
System (AMS) and Media Asset Management System (MAMS), material ordering module development online, development of
online payment modules, development of digital format conservation modules and modification of COMPASS and MAMS
applications. Not stopping to provide access to archival materials, ANM is now able to provide early booking services for
materials through OFA. Researchers are given the facility to make reservations as early as 3 days before coming to do
research. This can speed up the research process and indirectly reduce the waiting period of the material. For researchers
who do not have the opportunity to visit ANM or researchers in the virtual world, ANM provides services that visit not only
provide access, not only metadata information but also digital images can be viewed, ordered and then purchased. So in this
thematic finding aids project, we choose to do some findings about Datuk Aziz Sattar as our Malaysian veteran artist by using
OFA. We are required to discuss 5 topics about Datuk Aziz Sattar early life and family, his early education, early career, Datuk
Aziz Sattar’s retirement and also his award and recognitions.

CHAPTER 01

EARLY LIFE &
FAMILY

Born on August 8, 1925, the owner of the real name Abdul Aziz Bin Sattar was born FIGURE 2
in Perkalongan Village, Bawaen Islands, Surabaya. Datuk Aziz Sattar’s also known as FIGURE 3
Pak Aziz, his life history in Malaya began when he was three years old when he
followed his father, Sattar Sawal and his mother, Satimah Jalal, to Singapore in 1928.
The son of Satta Sawal and Satimah Jalal grew up in Kampung Pasir Panjang,
Singapore. Aziz received his Malay school education up to grade five. He was unable
to continue his studies during the Japanese occupation of Malaya. Among his close
friends when he was a child were Artist Shariff Dol and Artist Salleh Kamil.

At the age of 15, Datuk Aziz Sattar was tortured by Japanese soldiers because he
was accused for stealing. In fact, he languished in prison for six months with Seniwati
Roseyatimah's father, which is Wak Jasni, on suspicion of being involved in the
Natrah (Bertha Hertogh) riots in Singapore in 1950 until Japan surrendered on
August 8, 1945. Indeed, his ability to joke was gifted by Allah SWT since he was at a
very young age. When he was 10 years old, he started to be good at making jokes
spontaneously he however, also often sang and danced at public events such as
weddings and feasts in the villages. His career as an artist began in 1950 when he
joined a band called “Pancaragam Suara Hiburan Keroncong” and in his early 20s, he
used to work as a lorry driver with a salary of RM150 at the time.

FIGURE 4 In September 1951, he got an offer to work at Studio Jalan
FIGURE 5 Ampas, Singapore. Datuk Aziz Sattar’s life began to change in
1952 when he was invited by two friends from his village to work
at the Malay Film Productions studio. In the early stages, he
simply worked as a voice actor. However, he was surprised
because his salary at that time was much lower than his job as a
lorry driver, which was only RM70 a month compared to RM150
for his previous work. Then, in 1953 he was invited to act as an
additional character in the “Putus Harapan” film. To the chagrin
of all, his first film carrying an important character was the film
“Arjuna”, followed by series of “Bujang Lapok “and “Aksi Kuching”.
He was also one of the members of the 1990s version of the
“Panca Sitara Group”, along with Datuk Ahmad Daud, Normadiah,
Aziz Jaafar and also Nasir P. Ramlee.

From the time he acted in the film “Arjuna” until the peak of his FIGURE 6
career which is “Bujang Lapok”, he never acted directly with FIGURE 7
Tan Sri P. Ramlee until he once asked himself why Tan Sri
P.Ramlee did not offer him to act with him but he just kept
quiet until one day, Tan Sri P.Ramlee offered him to act in
“Bujang Lapok” in 1957. At that time he began to realize that he
chose the actor not because of friend factors alone, but he
chose the actor is based on the actor’s own abilities.

Based on that, he often acted with Tan Sri P.Ramlee in most of
his films with him until Film “Nasib Si Labu Labi” which is the
last film of Datuk Aziz Sattar acted with Tan Sri P.Ramlee
before Tan Sri P.Ramlee moved to Kuala Lumpur. He admits
and realizes that, the person who taught him the most in the
field of acting was Tan Sri P.Ramlee himself. For example, Tan
Sri P. Ramlee once said to him “you go back home, take your
coat. There’s this fashion show. You do what you want to do! ”
As a result, what we see in the movie “Labu Labi”, that’s the
result of it. After Tan Sri P.Ramlee moved to Kuala Lumpur, he
was still acting at Studio Jalan Ampas until the studio closed its
gates permanently in 1967.

FIGURE 8 Datuk Aziz Sattar has been married for five times but
only two of his marriages are more talked about which
is with Siti Rumiah Ahmad who is the third wife but
their marriage did not last long due to divorce and
Seniwati Dayang Sofia who is his fourth wife but their
marriage also failed so they decided to divorce. As a
result of Datuk Aziz Sattar's life partnership, he has
been blessed with seven children, 19 grandchildren
and also five great -grandchildren. The names of his
children are Ruzaiman, Ruzaidah, Ruzainah,
Zainuddin, Dahlia, Dalina and Sandakiah. On 16
December 2006, Datuk Aziz Sattar was married for the
last time with Hashimah Delan in a high-profile affair
that was covered extensively by the Malaysian media.
They were married by the Registrar of Marriages,
Khairuddin Haiyon at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Mosque,
Shah Alam with a dowry of RM100.
