SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: FRANCIS WILSON PLAYHOUSE PLAY/MUSICAL: GYPSY Gypsy at Francis Wilson Playhouse was an absolute sold - out HIT! Everything you could want in a musical. Talented singers, dancers, and outstanding actors. This tried and true show scored from the first note to the last! Lisa Reimer ’ s Rose was flawless! She had the guts, grits, and go -gettedness (yes, I made that up) of a true Mamma! Every song and lyric said exactly what she felt and she left you with the attitude of she gets what she wants, when she wants it. BUT, she does it for her girls. Always. Right? Ask again in Act 2… Speaking of her girls, Malaya Jade was wonderful as Baby June. And when June grew up, Shianne Haily took the role and ran with it! She and grown up Louise, Nicole Lodge, dueted with “When Momma Gets Married” and were mesmerizing! Bringing in the testosterone as Herbie was fan -favorite Jerry Slutzky. He blended nicely with Ms. Reimer ’s Rose and their romance was believable and sweet. Most enjoyable as Rose ’s Pop was Lee Catalfomo, who played the disgruntled, tight - fisted Dad, not wanting to give any more money to Rose ’s “dreams” of making it big. Jonathan O ’Brien portrayed Tulsa, in love with grown June. He performed a terrifically -choreographed dance routine in front of grown Louise, who so wished she could be a part of the act. Such a tender visual, watching Louise watch Tulsa… very nice. Onto the Burlesque House, where we meet - What else? The strippers! Linda Featherstone as Tessie Tura, the OG of the group; Natalie Ness as Mazeppa, the “bump it with a trumpet”; and Mona Lim as Electra, the stripper who “lights up”. These three were hilarious and so good! Loved them! Ensemble members who portrayed various Stage Mothers, Dancers, Waitresses, and so on, were crucial to the show ’s success were: Jade Granger (Baby Louise), Jack Haroutunian, Alex Lodge, Mya Simpkins, Erin Batz, Desirae Rogers, Leila Wilson, Alex Bourdais, Noah Erdei, Tyler Rogers, Wil Toro and Jaxton D ’Rion. Thanks to directof Jason Fortner, musical director Emi Stefanov, stage manager Emily Szymanski, costumer Karen Taylor, lighting designer Dom Bisesti, and all of the crew. Bravo!

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: TARPON ARTS PLAY/MUSICAL: SHAKESPEARE IN THE DARK II Tarpon Arts’ Shakespeare In The Dark II proved to be a sellout when we attended and it did not disappoint. What an enjoyable 90 minutes of a Readers Digest type of Shakespeare stories told to a very appreciable audience. The production was dedicated to the memories of Bruce Miller and to Dee Ray Crews. Director Dee O ’Brien made the most out of her “swan song”; in this production, her last before she retires from theatrical directing, costuming, and writing. Your absence will indeed leave a gap, Dee. As for this production, it was superb. As Shakespeare ’s second -best daughter, Judith, Elizabeth Bell filled the stage with her presence of voice, movement, and facial expressions. She brought his words to life and inflected his speech patterns in the correct way so as to impart the correct meaning to even the least of Shakespearian audience members. She made it fun, interesting, and meaningful. As the Bard Himself, Graham Jones presented the oh -so -right Shakespeare man. True to his character, he presented his works with pride. Charles Cronk was featured in the first story, Two Gentlemen Of Verona. It ’s a comedy, and when he talked with his invisible dog, Crab, we laughed along with good nature. In The Merry Wives Of Windsor, we found Falstaff, played by John Sallustio, pining after two married women – Mistress Page (Elizabeth Bell) and Mistress Ford (Christa Jerome - Smith). The banter between these two women was hysterical and the actresses were terrific. Their timing was very on point and it showed. Among the succeeding stories, the production continued to build talent after talent in each one. Hamlet, King Lear, and Romeo And Juliet. Turning in stellar performances included Loki Miller, Graham Muir, Kelly McGuire, Gabriel Castaldi, Ashton Cote, Isabelle Lunsway, Kevin RT Laughlin, Rudy Gonzalez, Stephen Bell, Aida Gonzalez, Kimen Mitchell, and Sophia Makris. We wish a happy retirement to Dee O’Brien and thank her for all of her talent, time, and volunteer service over the years. You have brought much appreciation to the world of English Literature, particularly William Shakespeare. “Good night, good night. Parting is such sweet sorrow. That I should say good night until it be morrow.”

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: GULFPORT COMMUNITY PLAYERS PLAY/MUSICAL: LOVE LETTERS Contrary to popular opinion, I have never been a fan of Valentines Day. However, I AM a fan of Love. And love abounded in Gulfport Community Players’ recent production of A.R. Gurney's Love Letters . The staged reading featured veteran area actors Susan Demers and Stu Sanford as Melissa and Andy, who wrote letters to each other over a many -decade span. Through grade school Valentine cards to high school dances; from college years to beyond. Marriages, kids, and travels – these two pretty much never stopped writing to each other. As Melissa, Ms. Demers was quick witted, clever, and sarcastic. Her voice and facial expressions told it all. Dressed smartly, and wearing the perfect jewelry, she represented the status of the family background she came from. Even the furniture where she sat reflected “money". In stark contrast, Mr. Sanford, portraying Andy, was of modest dress, and sat at a pieced -together table of simple proportion. His smile just won you over. He spoke simply and projected a humbler way of life. You yearned to be his personal pen pal. It was puzzling to see how these two opposing characters would have even struck up a friendship, let alone correspond together for decades. And yet, they did. And how they did is that much more amazing. We all followed along as these two actors told their stories by reading letters – simply that. But you can tell that their talent shines through each and every word. As director, Ron Zietz has masterfully extracted the essence from the actors to bring the little nuances needed to make their characters as full as they could be. It's the team that clicks in the end. The one that makes for a happy performance for the audience. And boy were we happy!

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: WEST COAST PLAYERS PLAY/MUSICAL: LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS We caught West Coast Players’ production of Little Shop Of Horrors for their last performance. In his directorial debut, Troy Reamsnyder, brought a highly energized production right from the get-go. Too bad this wasn’t a sing-along version because I had to hold myself back for sure! Let’s begin with that incredibly talented trio of Chiffon (Jessie Deggans), Ronnette (Katrina Young), and Crystal (Phineas Slaton). These girls were in sync, in tune, and in har-mo-ny! Choreographed steps to boot and appearances in “Laugh-In”-type boxes with screens was most creative. Joe Houser, as Seymour Krelborn was the nerdiest! He topped off his perfect nerdiness with a top-notch voice. His duet with Audrey (“Suddenly Seymour”) was fantastic. And speaking of Audrey, Jessica Ulbrich played her like a pro! Ditsy Brunette with a firecracker voice. Wow! That duet was killer. Nick Wilbur as Mushnik was hysterical. Little nuances he threw here and there just set you off laughing. A true comedian. He knows how to make us laugh without beating us over the head. True talent. As Audrey II/The Plant, DJ Schuett took his part by storm and wowed us! His powerful singing and vocal inflections lent much to his portrayal of this carnivorous vegetation. Kudos also to Katie Voorhees as Orin; Aidan Anderson as Puppeteer; and Ensemble members, Caitlein Jayne Jammo, Jazmine Mateus, and Jamie Morrison. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the incredible work on the actual plant, Audrey II – both the small one in the pot and the huge one on stage. They were magnificent! Credit goes, I believe, to Troy Reamsnyder. You are a busy man, Troy. We appreciate everything.

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: GHOST LIGHT YOUNG COMPANY PLAY/MUSICAL: THE LARAMIE PROJECT The Laramie Project at Ghost Light Young Company was a hard watch. Composed of real -life interviews, how could it be any different? Staging, performing in, or attending a play based solely on the murder of a 21 -year -old gay man brings its own challenges to be sure. But I will tell you that this cast stepped in like none other. Their performances as a company and as individuals were exemplary. Each of the company of 11 had no less than 4 individuals to portray, and as many as 8 And they were also gender and age fluent as well. It was no less than amazing! Of note was Rob Romero, who played 8 different characters, ranging from a Mormon Home Teacher to the bartender of the bar where Matthew Shepard spent some of his last hours before his death. Rob ’s smooth transition from each of his characters was nothing less than sensational. Also wondrous was Curt Fennell. Among 7 other characters, he portrayed Doc O ’Connor. And although this role was sporadic and short, it was sort of a comic relief and endearing, and whenever he appeared again, you just knew he was going to come out with a zinger. And that made you smile – which was welcomed in between all of the sadness and sometimes anger. This beautiful presentation took many talented souls to produce. Among them were Jennifer Casler, Thea Fennell, Marilyn Haegele, Sandra Huerta, H. Marie, Eileen Navarro, Pamela Two Spirits Reader, Natalie Sosa and David Warner . Special thanks to the Members of the Tectonic Theater Project; director Rachel Fennell; stage manager Rose Gillespie; and tech crew Donnette Romero. Ghost Light Young Company is proving to be a light in the darkness in providing our theatre community with thought -provoking stage productions. We continue to welcome them with open arms!
