PLAY/MUSICAL: HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR FAMILY AT
CHRISTMAS by William Missouri Downs

INFO:

PRODUCTION DATES:
December 2 - 11, 2022; Friday/Saturday at 7:30pm -
Sundays at 2pm

AUDITIONS DIRECTOR: Jimmy Chang

Needed are: 1 female, late 40s-50s
1 male, late 40s-50s
1 female, 20s
2 males, late 20s-early 30s

It’s Christmas, that wonderful time of year when families
deck the halls, don their gay apparel, and pretend they
don’t hate each other.
College student Loretta hasn’t been home in two years
because she has nothing in common with her blue-collar
parents, Jerry and Rosy Nutt. When she left to attend
Harvard, she thought she’d never return, but then she fell
in love with a cultivated Cambridge law student, Langdon
Kennedy, and he wants to meet her parents.
The difference between Loretta’s law student and her
parents couldn’t be more profound. He loves yachting,
while her parents never let her near water. Growing up,
Loretta’s mother told her chlorine caused skepticism. He
reads Tennyson, while her parents read Jonathan
Livingston Seagull - not the book, the Cliffs Notes.
HOW TO SURVIVE YOUR FAMILY AT CHRISTMAS is a
comedy about family, love, and the one thing we all need
to survive the holidays - forgiveness.

A highly inventive adaptation of the classic Dickens
story, pared down to its essential elements. In this
version, we encounter a company of traveling players
about to enact the Dickens story. As the on-stage trunk of
supplies opens, actors and clowns spill out and roll on.
The gruff stage manager and prop boy check the show’s
props, which are shabby and third rate, but the troupe
improvises by creating a magical world of make-believe.
The acting troupe soon discovers that the actors playing
Scrooge and Tiny Tim have abandoned the tour; but the
show must go on, and the prop boy eagerly volunteers
for the part of Tim while the cynical stage manager must
be forcibly drafted to play the old miser. The troupe
proceeds to make their way through the tale, creating fog,
snow, fire and ghosts through mime, imagination, and
wonderful visual effects. The rag tag players (including
the stage manager and prop boy) quickly become the
characters of the story, and we are pulled into the life of
Ebenezer Scrooge. The Christmas Spirits work their
magic and warm the heart of Scrooge, as well as the old
stage manager. This is an extremely effective and easily
produced version of this Christmas classic.

AUDITIONS THEATRE: FRANCIS WILSON PLAYHOUSE

AUDITION DATES & LOCATION: October 23 & 24 at 7PM
at the Francis Wilson Playhouse

PLAY/MUSICAL: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF

PRODUCTION DATES: January 12 - 22, 2023
DIRECTOR: Jason Fortner

Characters:

Maggie: The play's cat. Maggie's loneliness and Brick's
refusal to make her his desire, has made her hard,
nervous, and bitchy. The woman constantly posing in the
mirror, Maggie holds the audiences transfixed. The
exhilaration of the play lies in the force of the audience's
identification with its gorgeous heroine, a woman
desperate in her sense of loneliness, who is made all the
more beautiful in her envy, longing, and dispossession.

Brick: The favorite son and mourned lover. Brick
embodies an almost archetypal masculinity. At the same
time, the Brick before us is also an obviously broken man
because of his repressed homosexual desire for his dead
friend Skipper.

Big Daddy: Brick's father. Affectionately dubbed by
Maggie as an old-fashioned "Mississippi redneck," Daddy
is a large, brash, and vulgar plantation millionaire who
believes he has returned from the grave. Though his
coming death has been quickly repressed, in some sense
Daddy has confronted its possibility. In returning from
"death's country," Daddy would force his son to face his
own desire.

Big Mama: Brick's mother. Fat, breathless, sincere,
earnest, crude, and bedecked in flashy gems, Mama is a
woman embarrassingly dedicated to a man who despises
her and in feeble denial of her husband's disgust. She
considers Brick her "only son."

AUDITIONSPLAY/MUSICAL: CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF (cont’d)

Mae: A mean, agitated "monster of fertility" who schemes with
her husband Gooper to secure Big Daddy's estate. Mae appears
primarily responsible for the burlesques of familial love and
devotion that she and the children stage before the grandparents.

Gooper: A successful corporate lawyer. Gooper is Daddy's
eldest and least favored son. He deeply resents his parents' love
for Brick, viciously relishes in Daddy's illness, and rather
ruthlessly plots to secure control of the estate.

Reverend Tooker: A tactless, opportunistic, and hypocritical
guest at Big Daddy's birthday party. As Williams indicates, his
role is to embody the lie of conventional morality. Note especially
in Act III his off-hand anecdote about the colors of his cheap
chasuble fading into each other.

Readings from the script.

for complete details.

THEATRE: FRANCIS WILSON PLAYHOUSE

AUDITION DATES & LOCATION: December 4 & 5 at 7PM
at the Francis Wilson Playhouse

PLAY/MUSICAL: GYPSY

PRODUCTION DATES: February 16 to March 5, 2023
DIRECTOR: Jason Fortner

Characters:

Momma Rose: The ultimate stage mother. Lives her life
vicariously through her two daughters, whom she's put
into show business. She is loud, brash, pushy and single-
minded, but at times can be doting and charming. She is
holding down demons of her own that she is afraid to
face. Her voice is the ultimate powerful Broadway belt.

AUDITIONS PLAY/MUSICAL: GYPSY (cont’d)

Herbie: agent for Rose’s children and Rose’s boyfriend
and a possible husband number 4. He has a heart of gold
but also has the power to defend the people he loves with
strength.

Dainty June: Baby June as a young teenager. The older
she gets, the less she enjoys being her mother's trained
monkey.

Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee: Baby Louise as a teenager, who
grows up to be Gypsy Rose Lee. Still pushed aside by
Madam Rose in favor of June, until she herself becomes
her mother’s new pet project. Must be able to portray
both the awkward teen and a sophisticated woman we
know now as Gypsy Rose Lee.

Dressy Tessie Tura: a stripper just past her prime. A
burlesque dancer that shares her dressing room with
Louise. She was once a ballerina and still has some of
the moves. A coarse broad who’s been around the block.
Very funny.

Mazeppa: another stripper just past her prime. Big
Broadway belt. A burlesque dancer who’s tough and
physically intimidating.

Electra: another stripper just past her prime. Big
Broadway voice. Quieter than her counterparts, but her
costume is wired with lights, allowing her to “shine”
without working up a sweat. Ditzy and sweet.

Miss Cratchitt: the production assistant for the
Grantzinger theater, NYC. A comedic role.

Young Women’s Ensemble: singers/dancers who act as
both the backup dancers for Louise/Gypsy Rose Lee and
perform in the large burlesque numbers in the second
act. Some comic skills very helpful. (Marjorie May,
Dolores, Thelma, Gail)

PLAY/MUSICAL: GYPSY (cont’d)

Agnes: one of the women’s dancing chorus, strong co-
medic skills

Tulsa: boy-next-door type. Strives to break out of the
troupe with an act of his own. Sings and dances "All I Need
Is the Girl." Extremely strong dancer in all styles of show
dance including tap. Good singer, charming, very athletic
and handsome young man

Kringelin: the put-upon manager of a hotel

AUDITIONS Mr. Goldstone: Booking agent for the Orpheum Theater Cir-
cuit. Chaplin-like skills a must never speaks.

Cigar: rather aggressive owner of a burlesque theatre,
Classic character part.

Pastey: Cigar’s stage manager

Uncle Jocko: Alcoholic emcee of a weekly kiddie talent
show.

Weber: Surly theatre manager in Los Angeles

Pop: Gruff, unsupportive father of Rose.

Young Men’s Ensemble: Six young men sing and dance
backup for teenage June, plus join in the number "Have an
Eggroll, Mr. Goldstone."

house.org for complete details.

Dunedin Showcase Theater - Director Mike Cote is pleased to announce
the cast of the upcoming October production of Paul Freed's hysterical
murder mystery DEATH BY CHOCOLATE. Leading the pack, as famous
chocolatier and health spa owner Lady Riverdale, is Barbara Gaspar. The
new, rather snarky, manager of the spa will be portrayed by Graham Muir
and their underappreciated secretary Dyslexia by Susan Dearden. Ralph
Deadwood, the gym manager and all-around cad will be played by
Jermaine Foster while aerobics instructor and Richard Simmons wanna-
be, Dick Simmering will be brought to life by Jeff Holstein. Chef Edith
Chiles and head of the maintenance staff Alfred Mellox will be played by
Marina Spears and Bruce Taylor, respectively. Rounding out the staff will
be Julia Roberts (no not that one) as spa nurse Anne, and Candice
Kruse as Sweetpea Meadowbrook as the daughter of the former owner of
the spa. Add in Jeanene MacLean as snoopy investigative reporter
Margaret Daniels, Jim Green as budding playwright Ed Parlor, and a
questionable box of chocolates, and you have the recipe for a wonderful
evening/afternoon of theater.

Summary: Members of the newly renovated Meadowbrook Health Resort
are dropping like flies, including famed chef Edith Chiles! On the eve of the
grand re-opening, this is not the best advertisement. It’s up to John Stone,
the manager, to find the cause and the murderer. Delightfully sarcastic and
cynical, Stone finds himself teaming up with Ed Parlor, mystery writer and
amateur sleuth, in a wacky race against time. The clues point to a sinister
box of chocolates, and the suspects include all the outlandish characters
working for the resort. Could it be Lady Riverdale, owner of the resort and a
woman with dark secrets? Or Ralph Deadwood, gym instructor and
all-around cad? Dick Simmering, the aerobics instructor? Anne, the
panic-stricken nurse? Or could it be “Sweet Pea” Meadowbrook,
overweight and grieving daughter of the recently deceased founder of the
resort? DEATH BY CHOCOLATE combines all the elements of classic
murder mysteries with a scathing satire of today’s health crazes.

The show runs October 6-9 at the Dunedin Community Center with
performances starting at 7:30 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 3:00
pm on Sunday. Tickets are $15.00 and are available at the door.

Francis Wilson Playhouse - THE DROWSY CHAPERONE - Winner of
five Tony Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, The
Drowsy Chaperone is a loving send-up of the Jazz Age musical. The
Man in Chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast
recording of a fictitious 1928 musical, and it comes to life! Hailed by
New York Magazine as “The Perfect Broadway Musical,” The Drowsy
Chaperone is a masterful meta-musical, poking fun at all the tropes
that characterize the musical theatre genre.

Eight O’Clock Theatre - THE WEDDING SINGER takes us back to a time
when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up, and a wedding singer
might just be the coolest guy in the room.

It’s 1985, and rock star wannabe, Robbie Hart, is New Jersey’s favorite
wedding singer. He’s the life of the party until his own fiancée leaves him at
the altar. Shot through the heart, Robbie makes every wedding as
disastrous as his own. Enter Julia, a winsome waitress who wins his
affection. As luck would have it, Julia is about to be married to a Wall Street
shark and, unless Robbie can pull off the performance of a decade, the girl
of his dreams will be gone forever.

Based on the hit movie, THE WEDDING SINGER features a sparkling
score, energetic dancing, and enough 80’s references to make Cyndi Lauper
jealous.

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: SAGES
PLAY/MUSICAL: DENYING GRAVITY
“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” That phrase dates back to
1989 when it was coined by 74-year old Edith Fore. I
recently had the pleasure of viewing SAGES’ wonderfully
performed play, DENYING GRAVITY. It was extremely
well attended and also well received. And I can see why.
Written by Linda Goldman and directed by Christine
Hamacher, this cast told the story of Claire and her bad
luck with falls. We follow her story from her home to the
hospital to a nursing facility, and back home. We learn
how to avoid falls, how to overcome fear, how to admit
that sometimes one needs to depend on healthcare items
such as canes, or walkers, and to also accept help from
others. And this play is hilarious! The story is told with
humor galore! At the start, we see The Narrator - played
a la “Twilight Zone” with Rick Kastel as Rod Serling. He
appears sporadically throughout the play to introduce the
segments and explain what’s going on. He was just spot
on - and a bit creepy (LOL). Then we meet Claire in her
hospital bed talking with Pat, her elderly male friend, who
just loves to tease her and talk about his Tai Chai. Sandi
Sunter plays Claire and she is terrific! Her angst and sar-
castic humor come through as clear as a bell and we can
see ourselves in her right away. Pat is played by Max
Roberts. At 91 years old, Mr. Roberts is a joy to watch. He
doesn’t miss a beat and his facial expressions had me in
stitches!
In upcoming scenes we see Claire’s daughter, Sherry,
played by Cory McBride, a healthcare worker, Susan,
played by Cintia DeAlencar, her two granddaughters
played by Susan Dearden and Mary Hart, and the other
grandmother in the family, Mae, played by Letty Mendoza.
All of these actors were stupendous and did a great job!
Also to be commended were members of the Fire Rescue,
Stage Manager Candice Kruse, and the Back Stage Crew,
Hope Tera and Howard Wolff.
Keep up the good work! Can’t wait until the next show!

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: THE GHOSTLIGHT YOUNG COMPANY
PLAY/MUSICAL: URINETOWN

Keep an eye on this new theatre. That’s not a warning -
that’s a big tip. They are up and coming at YOU. What a
fantastic job we witnessed in their production of
URINETOWN. The Ghostlight Young Company gave it
their all in their inaugural production. Right from the very
beginning with the uber-talented Isaac Clark playing
Officer Lockstock. This young man is everything his
character should be - jazzy, self-assured, confident, in
charge, and ready to take you through the show as your
personal concierge, so to speak. Right next to him much
of the time is his cohort, Office Barrel, portrayed by Rose
Gillespie. She is the perfect Laurel to his Hardy. They
make a great pair. Also appearing very early in the show
is Tammy Lukas as Penny Pennywise, the jaded proprietor
of the city’s worst public toilet. Ms. Lukas’ powerhouse
voice is flawless and gives credence to her ruthlessness
over the town’s ability to relieve themselves. Caitlein
Jayne Jammo as Little Sally is terrific. The right amount of
innocence as the street urchin. She also helps to narrate
the show.
Hope Cladwell is portrayed by the fabulous Thea Fennell.
Hope is the idealistic daughter of Caldwell B. Cladwell, the
money-grubbing CEO of Urine Good Company. Thea is
absolute perfection in this role. She has the voice of an
angel and the looks of a porcelain doll. Her timing is on
cue and she is a joy to watch. A dashing everyman, Bobby
Strong is played by Nick Wilbur with everything needed - a
good, strong voice and the ability to get the girl. And
coming down that slide? Well, that was something!
Thank you to everyone involved in this STUPENDOUS
show! Jessie Deggans, Bruce Driggers, Kourtney Franck,
Sandra Huerta, Samantha Lee, Rich Mutkoski, Michael
Dominic Knapp, Elena Novak, Stacie Steinke, Phil Bracken
-Tripp, Kevin Prina, Todd Dupriest, Curt Fennell and of
course, RACHEL FENNELL the director, who was
tantamount in bringing this show to fruition. I’m sure it
was no small feat and let me be among the first to say
Welcome to the Area and Break A Leg in the future!

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: FRANCIS WILSON PLAYHOUSE
PLAY/MUSICAL: FOLLIES

Want some good old-fashioned fun? Then you could hardly go
wrong in seeing FOLLIES at Francis Wilson Playhouse. So much
nostalgia on one stage in one night was just mesmerizing. Of
course, the show lends itself to memories, as the two main
couples are spending their time re-living their youth at the soon-to
-be-demolished Weisman Theatre in New York City. Kristen
Engle plays Sally, married to Buddy, portrayed by Jerry Slutsky.
Kristen was so believable in her role – contented in her life and
marriage, but somehow thinking she is “missing something.”
Especially when she is reunited with Ben (Rand Smith). To Sally,
Ben is the one that “got away.” And Sally desperately wants a
second chance at life AND Ben. Kristen Engle sang beautifully
and mournfully, especially during “Losing My Mind.”
Jerry Slutsky wowed us with “The Right Girl.” Rand Smith, as
Ben Stone, sang a poignant “The Road You Didn’t Take” – as he,
too, ponders whether he made the right choice in life and love.
And then there’s Amber Britner – boy oh boy, does she perform
from the gut. Every song, movement, and breath of her character
shows us she is giving it all that she’s got and then shows us even
more! Her role of Phyllis Stone (wife of Ben Stone) is not
necessarily one that you would cheer for. Yet you find yourself on
her side in this Peyton Place foursome.
Many characters shine in this wonderful show such as Cherie
Albury, Kagey Good, Mona Lim, and Linda Featherstone. And
this show is grounded in the strong chorus of singers, dancers
and characters that are Paige Crockett, Mileena Ruiz, Alex
Lodge, Peter Barlow, Tom Workman, Duke Thomas Low,
Amanda Wood, Caitlyn Dardich, Amber Jackson, Steve
McBrayer, Debbie Cascone, Michelle Morocco, Neil Coughlin,
Mary Anne Boone, Annie Mickel, Shianne Haily, Kristie
Affolter, Nicole Lodge, Callie Gray, Barbara Ann Estok,
Michael Sporck, Nickie Berlage, Trinity Palmer, Janet Ando,
Sherry Dardich, Jean Pellegrini, Laura Christie, Mic Gossen,
TJ Howsare, and Charles T. Atkinson, Jr.
A giant congrats to Karen Taylor for the magnificent costumes! It
is no small task to costume this amazing cast in such finery.
Everyone looked splendid and very period authentic. Also thank
you to Jason Fortner and Emi Stefanov for bringing FOLLIES to
Francis Wilson Playhouse. It was worth waiting for.

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: TARPON ARTS
PLAY/MUSICAL: BAYOU RADIO THEATRE

Time simply flies when you are fully entertained and that
was the case when we viewed BAYOU RADIO THEATRE
PRESENTS VINTAGE HITCHCOCK and more! at Tarpon
Arts. A stageful of talent represented by a group of nine
splendidly-cast Players led us through several shows and
commercials of years gone by.
Featuring Bob Wells, Brian McCreight, Charlie Cronk, Dee
O’Brien, Janet Helms, John Kobasic, John Sallustio,
Kimen Mitchell, and Michael Bruno, the stories and
commercials were all first class!
Kudos also to Dee O’Brien who, with only limited time,
took on two roles to replace another Player, and did an
extremely fabulous job! Poised, professional, and pretty
good, we say!
Alfred Hitchcock shows “The Lodger” and “The 39 Steps”
were eerie as the cast told the audience in creepy detail
the spooky goings-on straight from Hitchcock’s mind.
Add to that another scary story creation of Willis Cooper
called “Bring Me To Life” -- this one made me shudder!
To lighten things up was Abbott & Costello’s very famous
“Who’s On First?” routine. Fantastically retold by Charlie
Cronk and Michael Bruno, it left the entire audience in
stitches! Why, you would’ve thought that we had the
original comedians in the theatre! “The Bickersons” were
also presented for some much-needed laughter.
From superior directing by Graham Jones, to outstanding
costuming from Dee O’Brien / Micki Bronson; from the
unbelievable sound effects of foley artist Brian McCreight
to the comedy brilliance of Michael Bruno; this show is a
wonder. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves!

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: WEST COAST PLAYERS
PLAY/MUSICAL: ROSES IN DECEMBER

I love staged readings. They are such a challenge
because, as an actor, much is needed to bring your
character to life while reading lines of dialogue rather than
having memorized them. Of course, after rehearsing these
lines, the lines are somewhat memorized, but still…
Having said that, what wonderful portrayals these two
actors performed. First, there’s Jessica Ulbrich playing
Carolyn Meyers. A young, determined woman, writing to a
reclusive writer, inviting him to his college reunion. She is
charming, friendly, persuasive, and oh-so-inviting, that
you would think she would hook him on first invite. BUT…
Then we meet Joel Gordon, played by Kelly DiMaura. He is
the writer, who is the drinker/loner/down-on-himself/
curmudgeon who is not giving in to her invites. He cuts
her down at every missive she posts. There is nothing
that will drag him to this “get-together”.
After many letters pass between the two of them, the
correspondence becomes more personal as “Very truly
yours” gives way to Love, Carolyn. I won’t give anything
away, as I hope you will someday come to see this
wonderful play for yourself. It will leave you sad-happy.
My term for melancholic. It was truly an enjoyable
evening. Thank you to the two performers, to director
MaryKay Cyrus, and to West Coast Players for bringing
this lovely show to our hearts. It was heart-warming.
