Auditions will be held on February 8 & 9 at 7pm at the Central Park Performing Arts Center. A zany richboy-meets-hometown-girl romantic comedy, Crazy For You tells the story of young New York banker Bobby Child, who is sent to Deadrock, Nevada, to foreclose on a rundown theatre. In Deadrock, Bobby falls for spunky Polly Baker, the theatre owner’s daughter. But Polly takes an instant dislike to the city slicker, so Bobby vows –through cunning, razzmatazz, and a hilarious case of mistaken identity – to win Polly’s heart and save the theatre. Memorable Gershwin tunes from the score include “I Got Rhythm,” “Naughty Baby,” “They Can't Take That Away from Me,” “Embraceable You,” “But Not for Me,” “Nice Work If You Can Get It” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.” This huge blockbuster musical features tap dancing, hilarity, and gorgeous Follies girls! ON THE BOARDS - JANUARY 2026 WEST COAST PLAYERS - 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming \"ding\" of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. As they navigate the tournament’s pressures, the eccentric group finds a new sense of belonging. Along the way, they learn that there is more to life than winning a trophy. This charming coming-of-age tale also invites four volunteers from the audience to participate in each performance, ensuring new and unexpected comedy every show. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves! At least the losers get a juice box. A riotous ride, complete with audience participation, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a delightful den of comedic genius. February 1, 2026 Directed by Kim Floriohttp://wcplayers.orgST. PETERSBURG CITY THEATRE - JAKE’S WOMEN America's premier comic playwright makes another hilarious foray into the world of modern relationships. Jake, a novelist who is more successful with fiction that with life, faces a marital crisis by daydreaming about the women in his life. The wildly comic and sometimes moving flashbacks played in his mind are interrupted by visitations from actual females. Jake's women include a revered first wife who was killed years earlier in an accident, his daughter who is recalled as a child but is now a young woman, his boisterous and bossy sister, an opinionated analyst, his current wife who is leaving Jake for another man, and a prospective third wife. Jake, played by Alan Alda on Broadway, and his women definitely deliver. February 6 - 15, 2026 Directed by Christine White http://spcitytheatre.org

SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: WEST COAST PLAYERSPLAY/MUSICAL: 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling BeeI used to be a spelling bee contender in school, so I know how it feels to be on the “hot spot” to spell complex words. The cast in this wonder of a musical is beyond outstanding - they are on the money!Donning pink overalls, Kaylee Anastasi, playing Olive Ostrovsky, while competing. She is concerned why her Dad hasn’t arrived, and worries he’ll miss her performance. She loves the dictionary and sings the beautiful “The I Love You Song”. Ms. Anastasi portrays the innocence of a young person who has some family issues to deal with. She displays the turmoil and anxiety her character goes through during the competition. Complete with a purple outfit and pigtails, Logainne Schwartzandgrubenniere is stunningly portrayed by Kristin Brazzell. If she can spell her name, she is worthy of being a spelling bee contestant! She is the daughter of two Dads and is perky, pretty, and has a lisp! They also seem to give her words filled with S’s! Ms. Brazzell is adorable and fills her character with charm and sweetness. Leaf Coneybear is played by Jordan Howard. Ms. Howard is energetic and a go-getter. She goes into a kind of trance-like stance when spelling her given words. So enthusiastic, she performs “I’m Not That Smart”, revealing her struggles with a lack of self-confidence and a severe case of Attention Deficit Disorder. Ms. Howard exhibits all of these conditions most effectively. We envy her energy!Troy Ochoa-Rowland gives us Charlito Tolentino, he of the “My Unfortunate Erection” ditty. He is a Boy Scout and very socially popular. His very personal scene is absolutely uproarious! Mr. Ochoa-Rowland characterizes his performance with humor, and after his elimination, he serves the audience with free snacks and sweets. Just a fantastic performance!
Spelling Bee review (cont’d)Marcy Park, rendered by Kiley Ondash, is a transfer student from Virginia, speaks six languages, plays all kinds of sports, and plays classical music on a variety of instruments. Ms. Ondash plays her standoffish, but eventually warms up to her fellow contestants. Her interpretation of her character is spot on and we loved her “I Speak Six Languages” song!Bobby Ramirez portrayed William Barfee, who was constantly correcting the adults that his name is BarFAY! He has an unusual way of “spelling out” his words with his FOOT! He performs “Magic Foot” complete with “foot” choreography. Extremely engaging, Mr. Ramirez uniquely endears us to him and we cheer him on enthusiastically. He develops a crush on Olive, which ingratiates us to him even more. Outstanding work, Mr. Ramirez!Rona Lisa Perrotti is played by Susie Rayburn, and she does an unbelievable job! Ms. Perrotti is very much into her character and renders a mighty performance. Sarcastic at times, you can see she very much loves the “bee” and her contestant-kids. Brad Brady is just hysterical as Vice Principal Douglas Panch. Mr. Brady hikes up his pants, swaggers, and plays a kind of stern, dorky, and comedic “Panch”. We absolutely loved him!A former convict, Mitch Mahoney (played by the marvelous Mitchell Broadwater), is serving his community service sentence by being the “Official Comfort Counselor” of the bee. When a student is eliminated, Mitch gives them a juice box and leads them offstage, offering his best attempt at an encouraging talk. Mr. Broadwater stunned us with a most-talented singing voice, especially during “Prayer of the Comfort Counselor”. This strong performance begs us to want more musical roles for this multitalented performer. Go Mitch!Directed by the legendary Kim Florio and stage managed by the incredible Becky Broadwater, you have two more opportunities (if it’s not sold out) to see this fantastic show - Saturday, Jan. 31st and Sunday, Feb. 1st https://www.wcplayers.org.Together with the West Coast Players’ Gala, this production proved to be a direct hit with the audience. We extend our many thanks to WCP for both events. It was a very enjoyable evening and we had the best time! End ofArticle
SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: GULFPORT COMMUNITY PLAYERS PLAY/MUSICAL: Beyond TherapyChuckle, giggle, grin, howl, roar, whoop, break up, roll in the aisles, and split one’s sides. These all represent synonyms for the word “laugh”. I am sure I used all of these meanings during the recent viewing of Beyond Therapy at Gulfport Community Players. From the opening dialogue between the two main characters, you just knew this was going to be a comedic hit!The aforementioned opening dialogue was between Bruce, played by Jeffrey Lukas and Prudence, portrayed by Stefanie Gilbert. They were on a personal ad date, and it was NOT going well. But hilarious, nonetheless. Mr. Lukas showed us a confused soul, given to crying jags interjected randomly. Ms. Gilbert was adorable and rendered Prudence as undecided, often nonplussed, and unsure about her date and his talk of immediate marriage and procreating. They were a “mess”, but oh so GOOD!They certainly set the bar for the remaining cast. And, wow, did they meet the challenge! The next scene depicted Prudence with her therapist Dr. Stuart Framingham, delightfully played by Mike Fasso. Mr. Fasso was smarmy and had a file cabinet filled with hidden agendas. He was loaded with double entendres and innuendos, which infuriated Prudence. Of course, it was revealed that they had an affair. But, according to Prudence, that was firmly in the past. These two actors had great comedy chemistry and were priceless! Now, Bruce also had a therapist - Mrs. Charlotte Wallace, rendered by Tammy Lukas. Ms. Lukas was uproarious!! With a penchant for substituting nonsensical words in her daily conversation, she just let loose and flung crazy words around in rapid succession, while tossing her body into wild contortions. And, if that weren’t enough, she had her little Snoopy stuffed animal which she interacted with constantly - growling with it, petting it, kissing it, etc. etc. The therapists seemed to need their own therapy, absolutely. She also quoted the play Equus as a good source of advice. Who knew?
Beyond Therapy review (cont’d)Oh, did I mention that Bruce is bisexual? Oh, yeah. He lives with his lover for a little over a year. His lover, Bob, is splendidly played by Bill Shideler. Mr. Shideler is flamboyant and out there! Bob is unsure about what’s going on with Bruce. He’s now dating Prudence (a woman!) and Bob doesn’t know where that leaves HIM. He also sees Mrs. Wallace for a therapist. It’s a zoo…I would be remiss in not mentioning Henry Godet as the waiter. He doesn’t have much to say, but his stage entrances are prized! The look on his face when he enters to attend to his table and catches just the “wrong” phrase being uttered, leaves him in shock as he revolves for an immediate exit! This happens several times, but just increases in hilarity. Couldn’t wait for his next entrance!! Mr. Godet also doubled as stage manager - extra credit.Director Roseanne Olszewski has garnered the highest praise for a sensational comedy. She selected her actors wisely and added in bit movements and slight but strong comedy actions/look, showing brilliant ingenuity for the audience’s raves. She also formulated scene changes which were expertly entertaining. Music afforded the stage crew to bop along with great tunes while changing the scenes. PLUS, they were in black with neon glow-inthe-dark tape and socks. It was genius! The audience sang to the music, clapped to the beat, and the scene changes were effortless and simply entertaining. Great performances! Congrats!End ofArticleL to R: Henry Godet, Mike Fasso, Stefanie Gilbert, Jeffrey Lukas, Tammy Lukas, and Bill Shideler
SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: FRANCIS WILSON PLAYHOUSEPLAY/MUSICAL: Brighton Beach MemoirsWhen you have the ultimate joy of a perfect cast in a play, you need to thank your lucky stars. Director Jason Fortner had the good fortune of selecting such a socalled cast when casting Brighton Beach Memoirs at Francis Wilson Playhouse. Each and every one of these cast members brought their everything to Neil Simon’s semi-autobiographical characters. Leading the pack was Robert Schwartzkopf as Eugene and he was priceless. Innocent, but with occasional barbs thrown out, to our surprise. Having instant rapport with his fellow cast members, Mr. Schwartzkopf held his own as the only boy in the household with, by his own admission, very serious problems. I mean, what with his 1st cousin, Nora, “blooming” female-wise, he is constantly in deep search for opportunities to press up close to her. With puberty looming in Eugene, this actor owns his role and gives us his prepubescent best. Cherie Albury, whether yelling at the top of her voice to Eugene, or quietly protecting her sister, Blanche, is the epitome of the ideal mother figure. Always setting the best dinner table, Ms. Albury conveys all the love and care a Mom, Sister, and Wife could give to her family members. Such a wonderful portrayal, Cherie!Sister Blanche, outstandingly played by Amber Britner, is the mother of Nora and Laurie. She has recently lost her husband and is struggling to get by. She has moved herself and her daughters in with her sister and family. It’s a bit overcrowded, but they make it work. Ms. Britner portrays Blanche sensitively and a bit on the safe side because of Blanche’s problems with asthma. Her daughter, Laurie, also has health problems, so things are not ideal for them. Great characterization, Amber!William Harris, portrayed Stan, older brother to Eugene. Stan had some employment problems and turns to his Father for advice. He also has a great scene with Eugene concerning “private moments”, which are common in young male teenagers. Just hysterical! Great presence, Mr. Harris!
Brighton Beach Memoirs review (cont’d)Scarlett Driver gives us Nora, the older of Blanche’s two daughters. She has aspirations of being a dancer and actress on Broadway. Although her family wants to support her, they don’t think it is the best career choice. Ms. Driver is on point to play this role. Her polished acting shows through her portrayal and she’s a natural. Everything is effortless. Thanks, Scarlett!Father Jack is played by Marvin J. McAuliffe. Mr. McAuliffe is everything you could want in a Dad. Authoritative yet loving; strict but lenient also. His scenes with his wife, Kate, are touching. They worry about each other and it shows. Younger daughter/niece, Laurie, is rendered by Madison Kalyan. When Ms. Kalyan does not have dialogue, she is the best at doing background business like nobody! I found myself watching her even though she was not the center of a scene. A fine attribute to have as an actor. Keep up the great work! Thanks to all technical crew and to the terrific two-story set - not an easy task to accomplish. A wonderful, heartwarming show!End ofArticleL to R - William Harris, Cherie Albury, Marvin McAuliffe, Robert Schwartzkopf, Scarlett Driver, Amber Britner, and Madison Kalyan
SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: TARPON ARTSPLAY/MUSICAL: Perfect WeddingI think it’s ideal when the review follows the title of the play - Perfect Wedding at Tarpon Arts was simply PERFECT! Every one of the characters was portrayed to perfection. Beginning with Nicholas Currier, playing Bill/The Groom. Befuddled and confused, Bill is facing his wedding day, but has awakened in a hotel bed with - well, suffice it to say, it’s not the bride. By the terrific expressions on Mr. Currier’s face and his fantastic reactions, we just know this isn’t going to bode well. He carries his characterization through the remainder of the play which leads to uproarious laughter from the appreciative audience. Megan Johnson plays the “girl in the bed”, otherwise known as Judy/The Girlfriend. Ms. Johnson gives us much to take in, as she spins through the plot, juggling first names, before it’s revealed who she really is - uh oh.Tom/The Best Man is artfully portrayed by Eric Weber. Mr. Weber never disappoints, as he wheedles through the hijinks being played all around him. His character, Tom, is the master spin-doctor, constantly attempting to maneuver each character to grasp something believable in this tangled, hysterical mess. Mr. Weber excels.Rachel/The Bride is rendered by Victorya Santos. Ms. Santos serves us a kind of Bridezilla, demanding her “perfect wedding”. This day is all about her, and she doesn’t let anyone forget it. Fabulous job, by a very capable and talented actress. Corrine McCormick plays Julie/The Maid with confidence. Of course, she’s seemingly the only “sane” one in the bunch! Delivering zingers with flawless timing, she gets some of the best laughs in the play. Great job!
Perfect Wedding review (cont’d)Daphne/The Mother-In-Law is superbly played by Anne Pedersen. Ms. Pedersen is always a joy to watch - she of the wide-eyed, demonstrative characters! Always lovingly played over the top, Ms. Pedersen dominates your attention whenever she is on stage. Good to see she continues her super talent once again.Thank you to the stupendous Jamie Bierchen for another hit! His seamless direction has bowled us over, as usual. Also thanks to Tianne Sweat for great stage management. You are appreciated!End ofArticle“Perfect Wedding”Tarpon ArtsL to R - Victorya Santos, Corrine McCormick, Anne Pedersen, Eric Weber, Nicholas Currier, and Megan Johnson
