14 SHOW REVIEW PLAY/MUSICAL: MEMORY LANE It was a great Saturday taking in a matinee of a SAGES production of Memory Lane. The only disappointment was that cast member Rosalyn Savel was unable to attend due to illness. Be that as it may, Norma Caltagirone did double duty and performed both parts of Nora and Mary Martha. As Nora, she talked urgently about wanting to move her sister into their house to live with them, to her husband’s dismay. Her spouse, Nick, (Rick Kastel) is adamantly against this. Mr. Kastel brought much humor to his role and was known as the “app guru” as he is always on his cell phone or talking about new apps for it. He had the audience laughing continuously. Ms. Caltagirone’s secondary role was her primary part in Memory Lane and she portrayed Mary Martha skillfully and with much feeling. She wavered between memory and forgetfulness, agitation and calmness. Mary Martha’s husband, Nick, was portrayed lovingly by Allen Coyle. He handled the conflicting emotions of peacefulness on one hand, to the wide swing of frustration on the other hand. At one point he was fortunate enough to release some stress to his priest, who happened to drop by for a visit. Lee Catalfomo rendered the role of Fr. O’Brien in a blended manner - calmly, understandingly, and with humor, when appropriate. The play was ingeniously scripted so that scenes/ vignettes were acted out, while in between them were the individual characters in a group session, relating to each other of their situations during the last few days. The scene changes in between were smooth and easy and not a distraction in the least. THEATRE: SAGES

15 MEMORY LANE - cont’d Peggy Whalen played Jane, who seems to have difficulty asking for help with taking care of her mother who needs care. Jane has brothers who haven’t really offered help, but she hasn’t asked for any either. On a Zoom call, a woman named Anna, (portrayed by Joyce Wagner), urges her to reach out for assistance from them and not to wait for them to ask - because it may never come from them. They may assume she’s got everything covered. She suggests she should write down a list of what she needs help with and approach them, and to be specific. Ms. Wagner handled her character in a calm and reassuring manner. The moderator, Liz, is played by Marina Spears. Ms. Spears deals with her role very straight-forward and organized. She keeps her “cast” on point and has an authoritative, yet friendly, demeanor. Another character caring for someone was Ken, portrayed by Ray Remillard. Ken was caring for his husband, Jack. It was very difficult for him and he also had very little help or guidance. Mr. Remillard gave us a loving and sweet Ken. Stan Gurvitz became the character of Danny, who begrudgingly cared for his father who had Parkinson’s Disease. His father drove him (and the rest of his family) away over the years. So he became his caregiver without choice. He called the Caregiver Hotline when he had what they call “caregiver burnout”. Mr. Gurvitz created a frustrated Danny, who needed to help, but was overwhelmed with past bad memories and present problems. Nikki was played by Jane Muhrlin very convincingly. She was the voice at the Hotline. She had a very calm connection, no matter what the caller was crazily expressing. Many thanks to Linda Goldman and Christine Hamacher; director Alan S. Rosenthal; co-stage managers Jennifer Dickey and Barbara Czech; and everyone at Pinellas Park Performing Arts Center, who made it all possible. Memory Lane was extremely informative for anyone who has someone in their life with dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease, or Parkinson’s Disease, as well as anyone who is a caregiver to someone suffering from these conditions. God bless you all!

16 SHOW REVIEW THEATRE: WEST COAST PLAYERS PLAY/MUSICAL: LOVE/SICK West Coast Players’ recent production of Love/Sick was so good that if you missed it, you will certainly regret it. Every single vignette was a prize. Obsessive Impulsive - Charlie Lane as the Man and Makailyn Barry as the Woman are the perfect pair. Chemistry oozes from every pore as they shop at the SuperSaver. Ms. Barry exudes snippets of sex and restraint while Mr. Lane gives in and pulls back repeatedly in their grocery store tango. The perfect pair and the perfect scene. Singing Telegram - The hilarious short about a woman receiving a singing telegram performed by Landon Moore and Mic Goossen sent me into hysterics! Mr. Moore’s “singing” and comedic characterizations were so understated, making them more laughable. Nailed it! And, Ms. Goossen’s reactions were spot on! Her dry humor and facial expressions were perfect. Great job! What? - A simple scene dedicated to that “L” word we all pretty much want to hear at some point in a relationship. But Andy, played by Richard Isaacs has a tough time with it. His recent pairing with Ben, portrayed by the wonderful Daniel McKay becomes threatened because of it. Mr. Isaacs shows frustration and hurt in trying to explain his problem with it and we feel for him. Mr. McKay shows his confusion, while also empathizing with him because of his feelings for him. A very funny but still comedic scene. The Answer - Celia (Becky Broadwater) and Keith (Mitch Broadwater) are getting married. But there’s a small problem… Seems Keith needs to give an Answer. Answer? I won’t spoil anything here. Ms. Broadwater is beautiful as the blushing bride. She’s understanding but confused. What is her husband-to-be’s problem? Mr. Broadwater says he must give the Answer before he can continue with the ceremony. He is adamant but tender. Assertive but loving. Will they marry? ?????????

17 LOVE/SICK (cont’d) Uh-Oh - Someone’s bored. She wants some excitement in her marriage. Her husband isn’t even listening. He’s too busy with his cell phone to even hear her. Barbara Carter plays Sarah (the bored one). Convincing in her words and mannerisms, she pulls a precious prank on her hubby that is rib-tickling. Hubby (Kelly DiMauro) doesn’t think so. Now, she’s happy and he isn’t. Mr. DiMauro is very relaxed in his role and plays his character so naturally - as if you knew him personally. Forgot - Dawn Bronson plays Jill and Rick Bronson plays Kevin in the marriage that passed something by. A baby. Jill wanted a baby. She even had it on her calendar and that day is past. She brings it up to Kevin and he was perplexed. He didn’t want to. This was Ms. Bronson’s acting debut. She is normally working backstage as a stage manager, and was somehow convinced to come out of the “dark” and try the stage. She was phenomenal! So natural and even, she slid right into Jill’s shoes. She became Jill from the instant she opened her mouth. And getting to act with her real hubby was a plus! Mr. Bronson was an ideal Kevin. Adamant in his opposite opinion, he insisted on no baby. Let’s hope this couple found a way… Where Was I? - The conflict in a marriage where one person works outside the home and one person stays at home and deals with the kids and the house. It’s bound to happen - it happened to Abbie (Kelly McGuire) and Liz Jaimie Taylor. Liz is at home and says she is looking for herself. While Abbie comes home and says she hasn’t “seen” Liz for a while. Of course, this leads to a horrible confrontation. Each of these actors are a forces of their own on stage. But together, they bring down the house. Their argument was extremely impactful and convincing. Destiny - Charlie Lane and Makailyn Barry are back for the closing scene. They are playing the same characters as the first scene (Obsessive Impulsive), but now it’s some years later. It’s the SuperSaver again. Each of them single - he, a divorce; she, her husband died, right before planning to divorce her. Their chemistry is still there and it begins to build again, but alas - they realize that it’s not to be. But, these two actors are meant to be...Congrats! Thank you to director Brad Brady for Love/Sick! What a hit!

Let me begin by saying that 18 Jen Casler, who plays Ruth in And Baby Makes Seven, at Gulfport Community Players, needs to have a one-woman show. This woman is phenomenal! The acting that was performed in this play is top notch and mind blowing. She plays Ruth as a main character; Henri, the imaginary child of the main couple and patterned after the little boy from the French film “The Red Balloon”; and Orphan, a semi-feral child raised by dogs which they rescued from Port Authority. Not only did she play them individually, but sometimes all three in the same scene, and at one point, simultaneously, back and forth! She was crazy good! Not to be outdone in any way was Katherine Laczko as Anna. Anna is the partner of Ruth - and very pregnant. Like about-to-explode pregnant. Ms. Laczko plays Anna and, at times, a boy genius named Cecil. As Cecil, she takes on a demeanor not too far from the character “Pat”, Julia Sweeney’s androgynous character from Saturday Night Live. When she speaks as Cecil, her pointer finger goes up in the air and she lifts up and down on her redsneakered toes, while speaking in a high-pitched voice It’s Anna who makes the first move on wanting to “clear” the apartment of the “extras” before the real baby arrives. The third real apartment dweller is Peter, portrayed wonderfully by newcomer to GCP, Phillip Greenwood. Well, welcome, Peter! Mr. Greenwood was a breath of fresh air! He was the perfect addition to this threesome and created some balance and calmness to everything. Until… he, too, became entwined in the arguments which were becoming more and more frequent. Things had to change and eventually did with excruciating sadness. It all turned around, though, and ended with a somewhat sense of serenity. A very controversial play. A very needed play. A very thoughtful play. A very brave play to put on - so thanks to Gulfport Community Players. Thank you to Daniel Harris for excellent casting and directing. It was pure joy! THEATRE: GULFPORT COMMUNITY PLAYERS PLAY/MUSICAL: AND BABY MAKES SEVEN SHOW REVIEW

This delightful show, directed by the talented Lisa Malloy, 19 featured the terrific Dave Malloy as the late actor, John Barrymore. And it was the late actor as he appeared as the Shakespearean character, Hamlet, complete with black tights and codpiece. Mr. Malloy did not disappoint, as usual, and had his wonderful asides along with his steadfast power in his lines. It’s a joy to watch/look/listen to him whenever he is on stage. But, in this show, he has an able-body contender - the all-consuming talent that is Asher Carlson. Mr. Carlson plays Andrew Rally, who is an actor that just finished playing a long-standing role on a TV sitcom. He yearns to play someone notable and memorable, and so the audition came along for Hamlet. He wins the coveted role and now he’s not so sure he’s right for it. That’s when the ghost of Barrymore shows up to help him along. Only choice people can see him, Andrew being one of them. Andrew’s fiancée, Deirdre, played by Isabelle Lunsway, is a pretty young thing - cotton candy, all wrapped up in taffy and dipped in honey. She, of the “I need to wait until married to have sex” club. Ms. Lunsway is perfect for the role and flits about the stage as if she’s an angel, but always lands on Andrew. Norma Caltagirone portrays Lillian Troy, Andrew’s manager. She speaks with a German accent and makes the most of her part. She’s commanding at times, but finds her sweet spot with Mr. Barrymore because she can see him and remembers him from when he was alive. Jennifer De Sane was hilarious as Felicia Dantine. With her little mini-skirt outfit and high heels, she was funny to watch and listen to. She really added to her character. Andrew’s friend, Gary Peter Lefkowitz showed up, played by Jeff Preil. Talk about fast talker! He was about a mile-a-minute! So good though! A great comic relief. Great job all around. We enjoyed every minute! 24 I have a kind of predicament… Tarpon Arts has a unique performance schedule for their production of “Love Letters” this month. There are six performances, and they are having six couples, with each couple dedicated to one of the six performances. To make things even more complicated, my husband and I are one of the couples performing. Now, when I say complicated, I mean this in the sense of reviewing this show for publication in APPLAUSE. It would be difficult for one person to review every couple, having to attend each couple’s performance. Plus, I don’t feel right about reviewing the performances of each of the other couples, being in the show myself. If you are attending a performance, what I’d like to try is to see if you would like to send me some review lines about the show they are attending. It can be more than one submission of that show – I can make a review from several submissions, or if I receive only one, that can work too. NOTE: These reviews are confidential. You will not receive a byline credit in APPLAUSE. You are not receiving comp tickets. You are reviewing a show you are already planning to attend. Just helping everyone out in a very unique situation. Cont’d
