Sir P.S. Sivaswami Ayyar is a great legend in the sphere of
education; he gave all that he had to promote, sustain and
perpetuate a school for boys at Tirukkattupalli, Thanjavur, and
a school for girls at Mylapore-Lady Sivaswami Ayyar Girls'
Higher Secondary School. It is worth noting that he gave
away his magnificent palatial house to finance the Girls'
School at Mylapore and lived in a rented house in the
evening years of his life.

On 7th February 1989, the National Boys' and Girls'
Education Society celebrated the 125th year of his birth in a
fitting manner. The Society decided to set another milestone
in his memory by starting a new school - Sir Sivaswami
Kalalaya Senior Secondary School, at “Sudharma”, the
building constructed to commemorate his birth centenary.

On 17th July 2000, the society also started a Higher
Secondary School in the name of Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya
Higher Secondary School at Mandaveli.

PLEDGE

India is my country. All Indians are my brothers and sisters.
I love my country and I am proud of its rich and varied heritage.
I shall always strive to be worthy of it.
I shall give my parents, teachers and all elders respect and treat
everyone with courtesy.
To my country and my people, I pledge my devotion.
In their well-being and prosperity alone lies my happiness.

WHERE THE MIND IS WITHOUT FEAR

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow
domestic walls;
Where words come out from the depth of truth;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary
desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by Thee into ever-widening thought
and action,
Into that heaven of freedom, My Father, let my country awake.

--Rabindranath Tagore

offered as languages in the curriculum. As per the three language
formula of CBSE, the student will have to study English and Hindi
as two of the three languages upto class VIII.

As per the Government of Tamilnadu’s ruling, Tamil will be studied
by all students from class I onwards, compulsorily, starting from the
academic year (2015-16).

The school has dedicated and competent faculty members.
They are highly qualified and are encouraged to attend
professional development programmes to be in tune with the
latest trends in the field of education and specifically their areas
of specialisation. Smart boards are used by teachers to make the
teaching and learning more effective.

The Curricular thrust of the school concentrates on five different
segments :

Pre - Primary : The emphasis at this stage is on
(LKG & UKG) co-operative learning rather than
competitive learning and on concepts
and learning processes such as habit
formation.

Primary : The focus shifts to formal education. In
(Std. I - V) addition, the curriculum offers an
exposure to various creative activities
through the fine arts.

Middle School : The stress is on knowledge explosion - on
(Std. VI - VIII) collating information. A choice in terms of
creative activities is offered as an option.
Teaching through computers enables
children to gather information.

23

Senior : Academics becomes the focal point.

(Std. IX & X) Students are geared up for the end
product – Higher Education.

Senior Secondary : The thrust shifts towards achievement.

(Std. XI & XII) The school aims at augmenting students’
performance, to enable them to secure
admission in quality institutions for higher
education. Thinking, analysing and self
learning are encouraged.

Science and Commerce streams are
offered.

English Core - Compulsory Subject

Group I - Physics, Chemistry, Maths,
Biology / Computer Science

Group II - Accountancy
Business Studies, Economics,
Mathematics / Informatics
Practices / Marketing.

Kalalaya believes in a child competing with himself / herself
rather than with others. In this process, tests and exams become
necessary as a diagnostic tool to identify the areas of strengths
and weaknesses of each individual student and to help them to
consolidate the strengths and iron out the weaknesses.

Exams are also conducted with a view to identify the sources
of information, ascertain the relevance, and apply them to
meaningful situations, thus strengthening their academic inputs.

The students will have a cycle of Weekly tests, Slip tests,
Class tests / Periodic Tests and Examinations. The cumulative
percentage of the year's performance in each subject will be
considered for promotion to the next class.
