Reflections from the Past ... Vision for the Future • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • From the Dean Good news! Both the School of Business and the School of Technology were reaccredited by their professional associations during the last year. It is particularly gratifying to have our programs receive approval after review by knowledgeable peers using generally accepted standards of quality. Accreditation is one of the most widely used means of assuring our constituents that we have met and passed tests of quality by: • American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business-The International Association for l\ lan agemcnt Education • Nationa l Association of Industrial Technology Accountability at Eastern Illinois Un iversity also includes periodic assessment of the effectiveness of faculty, staff, and administrators by those who are most knowledgeable or directly affected by their performance. Program assessment includes a number of internal feedback systems as well as the one and five-year surveys of grad uates in order to obtain feedback useful for program modification. Indi vidu al bench marking with peer programs has emerged as an occasional means of making comparisons related to quality and quantity. Bench marking done with one or more institutions that are somewhat similar has appeal. However, experience to date suggests it is hard to find "oranges and oranges," and to ga ther meaningful data when others have littl e or no benefit from what becomes an extensive time-consuming process. A more systematic process used by The Illin ois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) staff is periodic gathering of data from all public institutions in the state. The process has been in place for a number of years and yields reasonably good information for program comparisons. I n addition, the IBH E staff reviews all like programs, i.e., business, fami ly and consumer sciences, and technology on a rotating basis cvery e ight yea rs. Advisory Boards have proven to be yet another opportunity for external review and consultation. Successfu l practitioners are we ll equ ipped to critique programs, report industry trends, and suggest new ventures. Manyadvisory board members hire graduates of our programs. This provides a unique perspective of being able to va li date the relevance of preparation provided and compa risons with other employees - all of which are important to ass uring quality and continuous im provement. Awards and recognition are also meaningful ways of highlighting the outstanding character of our students, faculty, alumni, and others. Some especially gratifying achievements during the past year include the student, faculty, alumni, and other awards listed in this report and for the staff who report to the Dean as listed below. Our good news is good news, indeed, Deou /vorie for students, employers, alumni, and taxpayers. \\'e have validation from both cxternal and internal perspectives that our collective efforts arc assuring quality programs that accomp lish what they are intended to do. As we reflect on the past, we must also focus on the future. We look forward to enhancing the qua lity of our programs and meeting the changin g needs of curricu lum and technology. LCBAS Development Office J acquelille J oilles, Development Officer • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • The Lumpkin College of Business and App lied Sciences' Development Office is responsible for establish ing and implementing the college's fund-raising priorities and coordinating all fund-raising efforts, with attention given to special and planned gifts. Stewardship of our alumni, donors and other specia l friends requires a high level of care to establish that "quality" relationship that lasts and provides support for years to come. The LCBAS Development Office is the central point in alumni relations and development efforts for the Coll ege and has been since its creation in 1998. It has proven to be a va luab le part of the Coll ege bringing in more than $215,000 in major gifts throughout fiscal year 2000. As deve lopment officer, Ms. Jacqueline Joilles has assisted alumni and friends who want to know more about the College and ways in which they can lend their support including financial support. \ Compan ies like Levi, Ray, alld Shoup, illc. of Springfie ld, Illinois, and Edward1- Jones CompallY, of Maryland Heights, Als. These companies allow for the distribution of e lectronic communications regarding Eastern and provide an opportunity for informal luncheons and othe r meetings to share the Eastern experience with each other. Other corporate friends who have provided significant support during the year are Ullioll Pacific ) Corporatioll, Motor Trallsport t-\ Ullderwriters, USX Corporatio;f Price- UJ Waterhouse Coopers, Sara L ff: One iIlC., C(;, Lillcohl National, Nims Associates, i llc. and many, ma y others. 10 Four alums came forward this year and gifted the remaining room in Lumpkin Hall to be named after the EiU Tall Kappa Epsilon Fraternity Class of 1968. Through a $25,000 gift, Billy Ray Dabbs, James P. Evalls, Jeffrey C. Scott, and Charles W. Witters provided the final support necessary to complete the "Taking Care of Business" Campaign for the School of Business that began in 1994. A recognition ceremony is planned for Homecoming 2000. A major gift by an Ohio couple was given to create the Charles Jat'obs and Mariatl1l Dalla Younger Scholarship that wi ll allow students involved in campus student activities including those in business activities, to qual ify for approximately $4,500 of financial support each year. The Younger's are both 1954 graduates of Eastern living in Findlay, Ohio. The Younger's began their charitable giving to Eastern through a gift of a bench in the Commemorative Courtyard in 1998, and we appreciate their support. The School of Business received major support this year with a $25,000 \ \ gift from the Willow Springs Foundation. A portion of the Willow Springs Foundation gift will be used to support the activities of Beta Alpha Psi, a student accounting organization, and will assist with the AACSB Accreditation process for the School of Business. This gift is one of many received from the Willow Springs Foundation, formerly known as the Brodie Foundation, over the years. The close association with Wi ll ow Springs provided the communications which led to the intended use of this important gift and one that will allow accreditation standards to be ,'2- met. The Lumpkin Family Foulldation, along with the Willow Springs Foundation, has been generous in their support of the School of Business over the years as well - including the support they provide for the Lumpkin Distinguished Professorship. The Accounting Advisory Board, another important group to the School of Business, had severa l members making individual gifts to create a faculty awards incentive to recognize research by the accounting faculty and to purchase research materials. Pictured are members of the Accounting Advisory Board and faculty award recipients. Alumni of the Career Occupations program honored Dr. Joyce Felstehallsen and Dr. Tom Boldrey, faculty members, at the end of last year by establishing the Felstehausen-Boldrey E xcellmce in Career Occupations Endowmmt Fund. The campaign to fully fund this endowment was successful during FY 2000 raising more than $5,000 toward the fund. This fund wi ll provide scholarship dollars and program support for this non-traditional degree program. The School of Technology also worked closely with the Technology Advisory Board to provide guidance in programming and outreach to ir corporate L\ friends. Caterpillar, ll . and First Mid- \ illinois Bank were two corporate friends that provided sponsorship of the "China 2000" study abroad trip to the Three Gorges Dam area in China. Inkind gifts included a plastic injection ~ molder from Hoffer Plastic CO/poration, ~ and an ultra sonic cleaner from Lewifv Cleaning Systems. The School of Technology thanks its many corporate partners for adding to the "quality" of education provided to students. The School of Fami ly and Consumer Sciences received a special gift-in-kind from Ms. Mary Droste of the Finishillg ,qTouch gallery in Edwardsville, Illinois, who developed an interior design plan for Klehm Hall Room 110. Ms. Droste worked closely with vendors to obtain furnishings appropriate for classroom work and for special meetings and conferences - all at a reduced price. The School of Family and Consumer Sciences appreciates the efforts of Ms. Droste and is looking forward to the arrival of the furnishings. The School of Fami ly and Consumer Sciences also 7
8 conducted a benchmark survey to study the feasibility of holding a woman's philanthropy event in the future . Several additional gifts were made to current endowments within the College as in previous years including the Jim and JUlie Giffin Scholarship Fund, the John M. Luther Business Scholarship Fllnd, the Charles Gifford Manion Scholarship Fund, the Charles A. Elliott Technology Education Award, the Lois Ellio/t hld/lstrial Techllology Scholarship Fund, the Jack K. and Marge Hatfield Scholarship Fund, the FUlld for Excellmce in Family and Consumer Sciel!ces, the Ronald alld Myra Jeffris Scholarship Fund, the Kenneth alld Keith Kohanzo Industrial Technology Scholarship Fund, the 1. Hlavek Scholarship Fund, alld the Timothy Gover and Clifford Fagan Scholarship Fund. Gifts continued to be given toward the Commemorative Courtyard project to benefit areas within the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences as well, and information was distributed on estate planning and deferred charitable giving. In summary, the Lumpkin College of Business and Applied Sciences' Development Office assisted in securing outside funding that would provide more scholarship dollars and program support that assist in providing a "quality" education. As an instructional support specialist, I provide support that gives the faculty the opportunity to learn new approaches to providing information to their classes, to learn use of new equipment, and to broaden their skill base concerning technology and how it can benefit the learning environment. With my help, a faculty member successfully delivered a course online for the first time. This course was one of three courses offered entirely online by Eastern last year. I am currently helping other faculty prepare to bring their courses online for fall. Add itionally, I have provided support to the faculty to enrich their co urses with web-assisted materials. A recent survey of faculty, staff, and administrators concerning my position and its value to their work showed 86% of the respondents indica ted that this position has helped them in their job functionality. The response rate for the survey was 41 %. Faculty comments from the survey said, "This support position is invaluable to my academic work. [appreciate and depend on the Bad' Imi!': ,II,.. " ; "[ am glad we have this assistance available for us." The survey also as ked faculty to indicate what technology they were using to enhance their teaching environment. According to the faculty surveyed, some of the technology items they have used to help provide a rich learning environment community for students are digital cameras (42%), scanners (45%), list serves (29%), course web tools such as WebCT (28%), and e-mail communication (62%). Since technology continues to advance by leaps and bounds, my continued focus will be to ensure a quality instructional environment by allowing the teaching aspect to drive the technology enhancements.

Prater S/lpp011 Staff: Jean Bauer rvliche lle Morgan The School of Family and Consumer Sciences and the School of Adu lt and Continuing Education have a new outreach program which began in Spring 2000. Certification by Learning on an Alternative Schedule (CLAS) is designed to facilitate the completion of a bachelor's degree through the Board of Trustee's Degree Program for nontraditional students working full-time in early childhood settings. Participants must have completed an Associate of Science or an Associate of Arts degree in ea rly childhood or a related field in the behavioral sciences from a community college. CLAS has a weekend class form at in five modules of 12 hours each. The classes are currently taught at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois. The Child Care Resource and Referral Center received a $54,500 Quality Enhancement Grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services which will allow them to expand services to enhance the quality of ch ild care and provide training and resources to child care providers and parents. Members of the Fall 1999 Clothing Construction class, taught by Ms. Jean Dilworth, professor of Family and Consumer Sciences, and Lincolnland Hospice of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center joined together to make 23 hats for cancer patients. Laura Seils' sister experienced the devastation of losing her hair due to chemotherapy. After her sister died in 1998, she contacted Lincolnland Hospice about maki ng hats for cancer patients. Hospice contacted the School Enrollment (Rflsed 011 Fflll/999) Degrees Awarded (FY 2000) 183 IVlajors 559 Studellt Credit Hours 6,799 Shom'll frolll left to light: iIlr. Seils, now a volunteer with Hospice, donated the material for the project. Thanks to all who participated in this worthwhile project! The Spring 2000 Clothing Construction class taught by Ms. Rose Bradley, instructor in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences, had a unique opportunity to assist the Chicago Bears by making bear pillows to donate to sick children, Alzheimer's patients, and shelters for abused women in the Chicago area. The late Walter Payton funded the project. Thank you! The Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education granted developmental accreditation to the Didactic Program in Dietetics. This is a step toward the accred itation process in preparation for the site visit in March 2001. The Council on Accred itation of Services for Families and Children (COA) has determined that the Family Services concentration in Family and Consumer Sciences is equivalent to a Bache lor of Social Work. This will provide more employment opportunities for FCS majors in the socia l services area. Dr. Laurent Gosselin, professor of Family and Consumer Sciences, received a Freddie Mac Foundation Grant in the amount of $25,000 which allowed him to design, facilitate, and direct the development of a model infant development and care center at the Ca lvary Bilingual Multicultural Learning Center in Washington, D.C. Congratulations! The Illinois Department on Aging sponsored the first downstate meeting of the Illinois Task Force on Grand· parents Raising Grandchildren in September 1999. The School of Family and Consumer Sciences assisted in the support of this problem-solving program. Approximately 42 people attended this event. Eastern's chapter of Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society received the 1999 Chapter of Exce llence Award at KONu's national conference in July. Congratulations! The Peace Meal Senior Nutrition Program received an award of $39,600 from the Retirement Research Foundation, the nation's largest private foundation exclusively devoted to aging and retirement issues, to purchase two new vans to be used for the delivery of meals for the e lderly. The awa rd resulted from a proposal, "Gerontology Reso urces and New Directions Peace ,Ileal display ill hOllor of P/~ id llf Sur/e's inauguration
(GRAN D)," wrinen by Dr. Loretta Prater, chair of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences and coordinator of the Maste r of Arts in Gerontology program. The Peace Meal Program is administered throu gh the School of Family and Consume r Sciences. In October 1999, Dr. Carol Surles was inaugurated as President of Eastern Illinois University. The Peace Meal Senior Nutrition Program presented an exhibit "Celebrating 25 yea rs of Peace Meal" in honor of Dr. Surles' inauguration e vent. Mr. Michael Strader is Director of th e Peace Meal Program. Faculty/Research & Service Activities: Carol J. The first panel was made up of local leaders for a graduate seminar class, "Theories of Leadership." The second panel was made up of women in different careers and discussion was about their experiences as women in the workp lace. This was for a seminar ca ll ed the "Changing World of Women." Both seminars were taught by Dr. Melanie Mills in the Department of Speech Communication. Approximately fifty cadets traveled to Marsei ll es National Guard Training Area in October for a Field Training Expedition (FTX). This expedition is preparation for a five-week training course conducted by the Army for ROTC members that is held in the summer. The Leadership Excellence Club held a pancake breakfast on November 13, 1999. They served over 500 persons and profits will be used to supplement the cost to students for the Winter 2000 r-.lilitary Ball. ROTC Days were he ld on September 2,1999, and April 27, 2000, on Eastern 's campus. r-.lany pieces of military equipment, including a UH-60 Blackhawk helicopter, was displayed. Everyone had an opportunity to fire blanks from an r-. 1-60 machine gun or an r-.1-16 rifle. ROTC cadets demonstrated rappe ll ing techniques. These special days give people an opportunity to learn about the military, its members, and its activities. These events have been also been very successful for recruiting new members. The ROTC Rifle Team received a grant of more than $7,000 from the National Rifle Association. The monies will purchase high qua lity rifles, coats and shoes, eye protection, kneeling rolls, targets and spotting scopes. Eight ROTC cadets make-up the rifle team, a subgroup of the university's chapter of the Nationa l Honor Society of Pershing Rifles. MAJ Alan Jans is the coach. Congratulations! The ROTC Rifle Team won the Illinois Intercollegiate State Three Position Sma ll Bore Rifle Championship at Sandy Ford Range in Streator, Illinois. The six-member team competed with teams from the University of Illinois Navy Team, the Southern Illinois University Army team, Western Illinois University Army team, and the Illinois State University Army team. Congratulations MAj jans and members of the rifle team! The annual Military Ball was held March 4, 2000. Colonel Danny McKnight, Commander of the Ranger Battalion supporting Operation Restore Hope in Somolia, was the guest speaker. He made a very dynamic presentation on the importance of the American tradition of loyalty to protect and safeguard fallen comrades. His unit fought for 18 hours to protect an American helicopter crew that was shot down and under attack in the streets of r-.logadishu. He is the recipient of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for valor in combat in Somoli a.

32 Graduate Programs • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • School of Business Master of Business Administration: jalle P. Waylalld, Coon/ilia/or Quality education is the hallmark of the MBA program at Eastern Illinois University. Serving both part and full time students, the program creates opportunity for intellectual growth and personal achievement. The faculty uses a variety of teaching methods to apply theoretical concepts to actual business applications. Quantitative Modeling is a new course that allows the convergence of theory and practices. Students are given application problems that must be solved with modeling concepts using spread sheet analysis. In Operations Management, Dr. Yunus Kathawala asked students to create "The Millenium Mailbox." Working in groups, students met the challenge creating different solutions then displayed their work at the annual Graduate Expo held April 12,2000. Financial Management allows students to integrate marketing, management, and performance measures and controls in current business practices. Students complete both individual and The AliI/mill/II Mailbox Exhibil al Cmdllale Expo group case studies designed to provide comprehensive analyses of firms. Students are required to defend a course of action and submit reports addressed to subordinates and superiors. In all course work, students are provided opportunities to improve team, communication, and critical thinking skills. These skills developed through the program combined with a strong foundation of business concepts ensures that Eastern Illinois University MBA graduates are indeed the "best of class. " School of Family and Consumer Sciences: Master of Science in Family and Consumer Sciences Jl1{1I1ha S. Bro'WJII, Coordil/ator The graduate program in Family and Consumer Sciences is a well established program in its 33rd year. The number of graduates since its inception now totals 619. The Dietetics Option has been a significant part of the degree program since 1981. The American Dietetic Association accredited Dietetic Internship component of the Dietetics Option draws app licants from all across the nation for the limited number of appointments each year. Successful completion of the internship and the degree program permits graduates to sit for the national Registered Dietitian certification exam. The graduate Family and Consumer Sciences program allows students to develop individualized study plans with courses in human development, consumer affairs, nutrition/dietetics, and other approved areas. International courses continue to better prepare students for today's global society. Master of Arts in Gerontology Lorella P. Pra/et~ Coordinator The multi-disciplinary Master of Arts in Gerontology program experienced a very active year. Twenty-one students were enrolled and six graduated during the combined fall and spring semesters. The Gerontology Advisory Board met in October and May to review program initiatives and provide guidance for future directions. Student recruitment efforts were enhanced through the participation in campus and off-campus recruitment programs sponsored by Eastern's Graduate School. This included a graduate student in gerontology accompanying graduate school staff on trips to regional universities. A new M.A. in Gerontology program brochure was developed and distributed as part of this year's recruitment activities. Gerontology faculty continued professional development activities, including participation in the national meetings of the American Gerontological Association, the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, the Mid-American Congress on Aging, and the Governor's Conference on Aging and Human Services. Several students accompanied the faculty to professional meetings in which faculty and students were active participants. Sherry George was selected as the outstanding graduate student of the year. One of Sherry's accomplishments was to provide leadership in developing an intergenerational (grandparent/grandchild) Elder hostel program on Eastern's campus to occur in Summer 2000. She also presented a paper for the Eastern 's Graduate Expo which was held on April 12, 2000, on "Intergenerational Travel: Opportunities for Fami ly and Consumer Sciences." Dr. Loretta
Prater wrote a grant "Gerontologv Resources and New Directions" and received $39,600 from the Retirement Research Foundation of Chicago to purchase two vans for the Peace r-. leal program. Dr. Jeanne Snyder, former faculty member of gerontology at Northern Illinois University, joined Eastern's staff in January. The latest curriculum development initiative is the Internet gerontology graduate course developed by Dr. Linda Simpson, a faculty member in the School of Family and Consumer Sciences. The course, FCS 5301 - Consumer Behavior of Older Adults, will be available in Fall 2000. The M.A. in Gerontology program is looking forward to a more active recruitment year in 2000-2001 thanks to suggestions resulting from marketing projects completed by students of Dr. Nancy Marlow and Dr. Sid Dudley in Eastern's School of Business. School of Technology: Master of Science In Technology Gene Stralldberg, Coordillator (Fall 1999) Pillg Lill. Coordillator (Sprillg 2000) After serving in higher education for 34 years, Dr. Gene Strandberg retired as graduate coordinator in the School of Technology. Effective January 1, 2000, Dr. Ping Uu was appointed as the new graduate coordinator of the Master of II//ergel/emliol/{Il Tmvel Exhibil {II Cmdll{l/e Fxpo Science in Technology program. He will continue to lead the efforts to build a high quality and student friendl y graduate program. Presently, there is a total of 86 graduate students enrolled in the M. S. in Technology program. Three emphases are being offered in the program, including Technology Education, Technology Management, and Training and Development. The emphases represent a broad spectrum of needs of our students and stake holders. This past year has showcased man y accomplishments of our students in the program. During the awards ceremony in Spring 2000, Clifford Schrader and Mark Henderson were presented with distinguished graduate student awards. During Spring 2000, a total of 19 graduate students passed their degree requirements. Sanjaya Basnet and Joe Wilkerson were awarded a "Pass with Distinction" for their comprehensive knowledge in the field of Technology. In Summer 2000, 10 students graduated from the program. Among them, Dwight Prater was awarded with a "Pass with Distinction." Congratulations to all! Additionally, the graduate program committee started some important initiatives. The committee developed twO graduate certificate programs. One program is on "quality systems" and another is on "work performance technology." We anticipate the certificate programs will enhance our graduate program offerings to better serve our students and employers. The certificate programs will be implemented as soon as we receive approval from the Graduate School. The graduate committee is also working to develop another emphasis in the graduate program regarding computer technology. The School of Technology sponsored Graduate Forum 2000 "Metals, Alloys, and Composites for the New Millennium" on April 14,2000. Presentations were made by Dr. Donald Meinheit ofWiss, Janney and Elstner Associates, Inc. from Chicago, Mr. Robert Grace, FORTA Corporation in Grove City, Pennsylvania, and Dr. David Lange, University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana. Technology exhibits were also available in the School of Technology laboratories. 33
