by President, Thomas Doyle Bishop Moore Catholic celebrates its Platinum Jubilee of 70 years! A lot has changed around here, but then much has stayed the same. What remains at the forefront is our focus on faith and Catholic tradition. Bishop Moore Catholic was formed by the charisms of the Sisters of St. Joseph of St. Augustine. Those charisms of love of dear neighbor, fostering human dignity, and service to others are part of the fabric of who we are today. We continue to live out this mission, and you can see throughout the pages of this magazine our students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members serving as the Light of Christ in the World. I am pictured next to one of the newest additions to our campus, the outdoor Stations of the Cross. These particular Stations were installed at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe. The Shrine received a donation of new stations. Father Anthony Aarons, former chaplain of Bishop Moore, and I figured out a way to move them to our Pines. It was perfect timing as the old outdoor stations, lovingly and beautifully crafted by former Art teacher Mr. Vince Balaguer, had been weathered and beaten by the elements. The stations are in perfect keeping with the Pines. It is as if they were part of the natural landscape. The stations will serve our community as symbols of our faith and daily reminders of our Savior’s sacrifice for our redemption. As we walk our own paths each day, let us remember the path Jesus walked. Lent is the perfect time to reflect on Jesus and His sacrifice for us and to try each day to follow in His footsteps. 70 YEARS OF A LEGACY OF FAITH We focus on Christ’s suffering in Lent, uniting ourselves to it, so that we will be able to unite ourselves to His Resurrection. The Resurrection cannot happen without the Passion.

ENDOWMENTS John Kevin Doyle Fund This fund provides financial support to Bishop Moore faculty members for professional development. The purpose of the fund is to support teachers in their pursuit to advance their expertise in teaching. General teaching methods and content-area learning can be supported through this endowment. John Kevin Doyle, oldest brother of President Thomas Doyle, was a faculty member at Benedictine University, Chicago. As a professor of Business, Kevin was passionate about constantly improving his skills in education. Upon Kevin’s passing away of renal cancer, the Doyle family started this endowment in his honor. Balance: $20,575 Thomas Doyle, President, saw a need for the development of a Business and Finance track added to our Programs of Distinction. Doyle said, “Classes like these will help expose our students early to potential career paths.” The Business and Finance track will be added to our other Programs of Distinction curricula that include engineering, bio-medical, aeronautics, and computer science. These programs were developed to advance the mission of contemporary Catholic education. Students who are not necessarily seeking a career in business or finance will benefit from learning useful information that can be applied to daily life. As part of the curriculum, students will learn about financial markets, investing, homeownership, and other essential topics that will serve them well as they transition to adulthood. As with all of our curriculum, Catholic teachings will be infused into the lessons. Doyle shared, “The students will learn how to be good stewards of the financial resources they are given and how money can help others and change the world.” Business and Finance Now Part of Programs of Distinction FAITH AND FINANCE St. Matthew, a tax collector, was a financial genius. In the Gospel of Matthew, he provides us with the following insight on how to keep finances in perspective. “No one can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” -Matthew 6:24 Creating the perfect equation for the 21st century classroom. The Office of Advancement is proud to oversee a growing number of named endowment funds that have been established to provide financial assistance to students who wish to attend Bishop Moore Catholic. Each year a defined portion of the fund is awarded while the principal investment is held “in perpetuity” so that the vision of the donors will continue to make a difference at BMC. These funds have been established by alumni, parents, & friends of our school. If you are interested in establishing a named endowment fund or contributing to an existing endowment, please contact: Tanya Starrett '01, Director of Advancement, 407-293-7561 (233) or [email protected].

THE 4 A’ s by Principal, Dr. Erika Wikstrom This year we celebrate 70 years of excellence here at Bishop Moore Catholic. We are excited to feature highlights of our current student body in the arts, academics, athletics, and altruism. There’s a place for everyone’s success here at Bishop Moore Catholic. Creating opportunities for all individuals on campus to strive and succeed is part of our “why.” New opportunities are being introduced that are exciting and noteworthy. We hope that you will enjoy reading about all the great things Bishop Moore has to offer. As I finish my fourth year as principal of this school, my prayer for our students and our community is to follow the lead of our Sisters of St. Joseph in spreading kindness and love to others. The BMC Jazz Band was invited to perform in the lobby of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts immediately preceding the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s performance of Brahms 3rd symphony. Following the performance, students were invited to attend the symphony concert and even got the rare opportunity to walk out onto the stage before the concert and meet the guest conductor. This was a great way to highlight the connection between the arts programs at BMC and the educational outreach programs of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. The future is bright for BMC Performing & Fine Arts! In Mr. Garver’s art class, students were asked to take a look at the French artist Arnaud Bauville who creates portraits of people drawing on inspiration from '20s Dadaism. The students were asked to research a saint and create their portrait in the style of Bauville. Art student Azzurra O. said, “I didn’t like this assignment at first. It was really challenging. But, pushing through and trusting the creative process, it really came together in the end.” BMC’s Women’s Chorale scored straight superiors (the highest possible score) at the MPA Vocal Competition! This accomplishment qualifies them for the State MPA vocal competition, a remarkable achievement for a choir made up of 50% new singers. fine arts choir program jazz band

1954-1967 Life in 1954 was very different. It was the year that “Under God” was added to the Pledge of Allegiance, the magazine Sports Illustrated debuted, the song of the year was “Rock Around the Clock”, and Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien was a bestseller. A movie ticket cost 70 cents and Oprah, John Travolta, and Condoleeza Rice were born this year. Life at Bishop Moore Catholic, or Orlando Central Catholic as it was originally named, was also very different. The new school had one building, Bishop Grady Hall, which housed five classrooms, Biology and Chemistry labs, a section for Home Economics, and an administration unit. The library, gymnasium, athletic field, and cafeteria were adjacent to the classroom wing. Orlando Central Catholic was a co-ed school but boys and girls were separated. Bishop Moore’s first graduating class held its commencement in 1955 with 24 students. To accommodate the growing student body, a new building, Bishop Borders Hall, was erected in 1959 which included a library and six additional classrooms. In 1960, Loretta Hall, the new girls' school, was completed. In 1965, the iconic Dome, The Heidrich Cultural Center, and a new convent and chapel for the Sisters of St. Joseph were added. In 1967, our Hornets won their first state championship in baseball which began Bishop Moore’s reputation as an athletics’ powerhouse. OUR FIRST DECADE Now that is a lot to accomplish in 13 short years! ENDOWMENTS Bishop Moore Endowment and Charitable Trust The Endowment and Charitable Trust was established for the following purposes: capital improvements, faculty and staff salaries, faculty and staff professional development, and student financial aid. This endowment was started in the early 1990s by supporters of Bishop Moore Catholic including the Brekse, Farrell, Dunn, Perez, Martinez, Powers, Mullins, Madden, Guarneri, Kiley, Dittmer, Kelly, Adamson, Brown, Bunning Dempsey, Maroon, and Bert families. She was also the Chairperson of the Language Department and the Dean of Students for two years. She was beloved by her students, faculty, and staff. During her tenure, she helped initiate various Spanish courses, the Spanish club, and the Spanish Honor Society that promoted language learning and culture within the school community. Maria is a source of strength and inspiration to all who know her. This fund was established by her loving family to honor and continue Maria’s legacy of faith and quality teaching at Bishop Moore. The endowment will provide annual funding for technology enhancements and infrastructure as needed by the students and faculty. Balance: $95,399

“To read is to dream with your eyes wide open.” During Catholic Schools Week, Rho Kappa and NEHS launched a book drive to promote literacy. Establishing Free Little Libraries through courthouses in Central Florida was the idea of Senior Charles “Chase” Stacy. Chase shared, ”There are a lot of so-called ‘book deserts’ throughout the United States where low-income neighborhoods do not have access to literary materials. These libraries are convenient, and free, and provide equitable access to reading materials for everyone.” Through the generosity of the BMC community, over 1500 books were collected. Currently, this project has created 3 little libraries in Seminole and Brevard Counties. Not only are books flying off the shelves, but visitors and workers at the courthouse alike are also bringing in books to contribute to the library. ENDOWMENTS LITTLE LIBRARIES “ Hear No Evil, Speak No Evil, See No Evil ” 1974 &2024 Girls in Saddleshoes in the 1974 library Andrew P. Caneza Foundation Endowment Fund Andrew P. Caneza was a loving father and grandfather who was a strong supporter of Catholic education. His family began this endowment in his loving memory to offer financial assistance to a student in need. Grandchildren Jennifer Black '93, Tory Whitson Lee '94, and Andrew Caneza '97 are all alumni of Bishop Moore. Great grandchildren and current BMC students include: Brooklyn B., Ireland B., and Riley C.. Balance: $25,335 Leonard Jones Endowment Fund Waymon Armstrong’s relationship with Bishop Moore started in 1976 when his family moved to Orlando and enrolled Waymon halfway through his freshman year. Waymon’s mother was forced with a difficult decision to divorce Waymon’s father, a former combat medic who suffered from the ill effects of PTSD, and move into a one-bedroom apartment in Orlando. Waymon’s grandfather, Pa, was concerned about Waymon and knew that he needed the right structure and discipline that Bishop Moore could provide. He wanted his oldest grandson to have a faith-based education and paid for Waymon to attend Bishop Moore. Waymon, though thankful at the time, did not realize until later what an impact Bishop Moore would have and continues to have on his life and the life of his family. This endowment was started to honor Pa. Balance: $50,000

Bishop Moore Catholic launched a new podcast called To the Heights, or Verso L’ Alto. The podcast launched on January 19, 2024, and episodes air twice a month on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, and www.bishopmoore.org. The title is taken from Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati’s philosophy on life and adventure and his climb towards Christ. Hosted by Matt Hedrick, BMC’s head football coach, and J.P. Kuhlman, BMC’s Director of Mission Effectiveness, they explore contemporary topics of faith, connection, and current events through a Catholic lens. J.P. is a husband and father who hopes to someday write a book on first-time dad blunders. He has two great passions – faith and sports – and connecting the two is his favorite part of his job. J.P. says, “Every day is an opportunity to help 1,500 young men and women on their journey ‘to the heights.’" Matt is a proud father of two boys and the husband of a woman far more talented than he. He has been a teacher and head football coach at Bishop Moore Catholic High for the last 30 years, and has spent his career forming the hearts and minds of countless young people on the field and in the classroom. Matt believes in the adage, "If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life." Matt is a mentor, coach, speaker, and most importantly, an imperfect man striving to follow Christ each day. In episode one, “Wins, Losses, and Lessons”, Matt and J.P. discuss the meaning behind the podcast’s title, the life lessons they have learned from sports, and how they aspire to the heights – to live a life of faith, intentionality, and connection. Episode two, “The Joy of a Servant’s Heart,” highlights what in life brings us joy. It is not material wealth or even our accomplishments. What brings us joy is loving and serving others as Jesus did. It is in the simple things we do daily for others, not necessarily heroic measures. In episode three, “When Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday Collide”, the hosts reflect on how much Ash Wednesday and Valentine's Day have in common. The key to a romantic relationship: communication, sacrifice, and love sound very familiar to prayer, fasting, and good works that are the hallmarks of Lent. Matt and JP share their stories of love and sweet compromises in marriage and provide some suggestions on how to make this Lent stand apart. 70 YEARS OF FAITH MATT HEDRICK JP KUHLMAN

The Sisters of St. Joseph, originally from LePuy France, were invited to Florida at the request of Bishop Verot in 1866 to educate the freed slaves and their children. They were “just ordinary women with a great love of God” and desired to serve the “dear neighbor.” They embarked on a vision to serve the needs of the new land where they now lived. It was Bishop John Moore who expanded their ministries in Orlando in 1889. In 1954, they were invited to facilitate the opening of Orlando Central Catholic. When the school opened, most of the staff were Sisters. They taught the students and ministered to the spiritual needs of the community. As Bishop Moore grew, the sisters continued to be part of the community and most recently served as the chaplain for the girls volleyball team and led a retreat this fall for our faculty and staff. Maxims of the Little Institute, as it was called upon inception, were 100 short statements written by the founder of the Sisters in LePuy, France. These statements capture the spirituality of the sisters. It is with their charism from which we still operate today. BMC mission trips to the Dominican Republic and various service drives continue their legacy of service, and we have adopted a practice of sharing a Maxim every Monday as a weekly reflection for our current faculty and staff. ENDOWMENTS Guardian Angel Endowment This fund provides financial assistance to BMC students’ families who are in crisis due to an unexpected emergency. The purpose of the fund is to lighten a family’s financial burden when facing serious illness, loss of employment, or other factors that affect their ability to pay schoolrelated expenses such as tuition, technology, books, uniforms, lunch accounts, sports teams, and other essentials. Balance: $371,735 Peter and Catherine McCaffrey Endowment Fund This fund was established in memory of Peter and Catherine McCaffrey, parents of Anne Schultz. Joe and Anne Schultz wanted to establish a fund that would provide financial assistance for an incoming freshman student from St. James Cathedral School. Their son Christopher '18 is a graduate of Bishop Moore Catholic. Joe and Anne served on the BMC Annual Fund and Marketing committees, Joe was on the board of St. James and was a model of the St James motto “Come to learn, leave to serve.” Balance: $63,803 OUR FOUNDRESSES MAXIMS OF SPIRITUALITY: MAXIM 11 Always speak favorably of others and value highly the good in them, excusing and covering up, in the way you can, the deficiencies that they might have. Our Family of Faith (FOF) monthly series and breakfast began in 2016, and was the brainchild of Amanda Livermore, then Director of Mission Effectiveness. Amanda now serves as the President of Cristo Rey Orlando. “Bishop Moore exists as an evangelistic arm of the Catholic Church in Orlando, having the unique opportunity to build community with 1500 current students, their families, and over 25,000 alumni. The Family of Faith breakfasts were created because it is not only our students, but all of us who are on a faith journey, and Bishop Moore wanted to invest in the spiritual development of the entire community,” Livermore said. The series and breakfast were originally held at the Tap Room at Dubsdread and moved to the Moore Center for Excellence once it was completed. The event space became the perfect host location for this intimate group. Since its inception, this event has been very successful. The series, held on the first Tuesday of each month, welcomes over 50 people and continues to grow. We have welcomed guest speakers including Brother Sawyer, UCF Campus Ministry; Father Anthony Aarons, Rector of Mary Queen of the Universe; Jen Settle, Director of Programs from Theology of the Body Institute; and Fr. Blake Britton, author of “They Might be Saints” which details the lives of the Florida Martyrs and championing their case for sainthood. Topics range from Made in God’s Image, to Saints of Solidarity, to this year’s current theme, Having a Eucharistic Heart. Livermore shared, “Our first FOF came out of the Orlando Chapter of Legatus reaching out to let us know they had a very strong speaker they were bringing in for a meeting and wondered if we would benefit in some way. We quickly realized that alumni and current parents were coming back time after time, enjoying the fellowship and the opportunity to grow in their faith.” We invite you to mark your calendars for the first Tuesday of each month as we continue our Family of Faith series. ENDOWMENTS Perreault Family Endowment Fund This fund was established to assist those called to serve in Catholic vocations. Proceeds will provide tuition assistance and supplemental living expenses while on their religious formation. Paul Perreault '75 responded to a call to priesthood, attended seminary, and during his discernment was called to the vocation of married life. Assisting those called to a religious vocation is important to the Perreault family. Sister Odette '76 and Brother George '72 are graduates of Bishop Moore. Balance: $37,787 St. Michael the Archangel Endowment This fund was established with the belief that the BMC community could benefit from the presence of a religious sister, full-time on campus. With this endowment, students are able to witness, on a daily basis, a religious sister who has said yes to God’s call for her life. Our goal for this fund is to reach $750,000, which would yield an investment to sustain the salary for a religious sister in perpetuity. This endowment was started by an anonymous donor. Balance: $318,620 Endowment Financially Supports the Call to Holy Orders Paul Perreault '75 and his family foundation have developed an endowment that supports Bishop Moore Catholic alumni who have discerned a religious vocation and have answered the Holy Spirit calling them to Holy Orders. Much of the cost associated with seminary or novitiate is up to the individual entering formation. As would be typical for any other college student, many in formation take out loans to pay for tuition and ancillary fees. Fortunately, there are benefactors who make funds available through scholarships, grants, or in the case of the Perreault Family Foundation, an endowment. Paul Perreault is passionate about providing support for future religious. Paul discerned a vocation to the priesthood and was in seminary for a few years. He later discerned a vocation to the married life after meeting his future wife, Beverly. The Sacrament of Holy Orders is considered “the sacrament of apostolic ministry” as this is the continuation of Christ’s priesthood. In 2018, according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Official Catholic Directory, there were 37,302 diocesan and religious-order priests in the United States. At the same time, there were 4,856 men in seminary and 45,100 religious sisters. There are over 1.1 billion Catholics worldwide. The number of religious serving the faithful is in steep decline. “Becoming a priest or a man or woman religious is not primarily our own decision, rather it is the response to a call and to a call of love,” Pope Francis said in an address to Seminarians and Novices. All of the faithful are called to pray for those discerning this vocation. Two BMC alumni from the Class of 2021 are in religious formation and have received support from this foundation. Peter Kay '23 (pictured left in photo) is currently in his Propaedeutic (1st) year at St. Joseph Seminary in St. Benedict, Louisiana. He is a seminarian for the Diocese of Orlando. Mia Jimenez '23 is a postulant, in her 1st year of formation in Miami with the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary, founded by Mother Adela Galindo. Mia entered her postulancy on the Feast Day of Our Lady of the Poor. Mia shared this prayer, “Let our blessed mother guide you in all paths and directions that she desires to take you. As you allow her to hold your hand she will always lead you to Jesus and give you the grace to respond as we did in our Fiat today.” May God continue to bless these young people as they continue through their studies. Ann Hefferin Memorial Endowment One memorial scholarship is awarded in loving memory of Ann Marie Hefferin, Class of '11. Ann died suddenly in her freshman year of college at UCF. Ann was an “Angel” in disguise to all who knew and met her, as she lived her most spirited life as a child and young woman. At Bishop Moore, Ann was active as an officer in the English National Honor Society, a member of Rho Kappa, Science National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Junior Civitan, and Varsity lacrosse, and participated in Peer Ministry. An annual scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to a collegebound graduate of BMC who exemplifies Ann’s love of life. Ann’s brothers John '09 and Nick '17 are alums of Bishop Moore. Balance: $36,093

This season has been defining for our girls soccer program. At the beginning of each year, every team at Bishop Moore Catholic certainly envisions a championship. However, each season is filled with challenges that our coaching staff and athletes have to face to ascend the mountain top of success. In addition to the difficulties of playing one of the toughest schedules in Florida, replacing an elite senior class from both a talent and leadership perspective, and losing a star goalkeeper to a season-ending injury in the first match of the season, these Hornets also faced the mounting pressure of repeating the championship journey for a third consecutive time while the target on their backs to be defeated by the rest of Florida's competitors expanded immensely. Achieving a 3-peat, something that is even a rarity at the professional levels, is a defining accomplishment. by Rob Wennington, A.D.

There is a clear process established by leader, Coach Amy Geltz, and our athletes' desire to buy into that process is impressive. Amy Geltz has been a part of 6 of the 7 BMC girls soccer state title wins either as a player or a coach. Here are her thoughts on the success of this year’s team and the pressure to continue to win year after year: “As a coach, I haven't fully processed the idea of repeat state championship titles yet, so I can't share concrete thoughts. However, in terms of pressure, we focus on approaching every game with the same intensity and determination that we bring to those final championship matches. It's about staying grounded and committed to excellence in each moment, regardless of past successes.” We’ve stayed committed to our goals, even in the challenges that we have faced, and we believe in our journey together. - Coach Amy Geltz '91

3 TIME NATIONA

AL CHAMPIONS On March 10, 2024, Bishop Moore Catholic’s Dance team continued their streak of dance excellence by scoring a third consecutive National Championship win in the NDA Large Varsity Hip Hop division. Dancing to *NSYNC’s “Pop,” the team dazzled the audience with their coordinated moves, creative choreography, and daring acrobatics. At the end of the routine, dancers demonstrated that all we do is for the Glory of God when they made the sign of the cross. Captains Valentina A., Natalia E., and Mikayla F. shared that they were proud of the team for giving their all. This talented team also won other category awards including superior showmanship and best in hip hop. Coach Jasmine Thomas shared, "On behalf of myself and the other coaches, we are beyond proud of these dancers. They definitely poured their heart out on the stage and captivated the audience. They are truly a blessing to work with."

ENDOWMENTS Joe Skinner Endowment Fund Named in memory of Joseph S kinner, Class of '16. This endowment awards a scholarship to the male and female recipient of the Bishop Moore Catholic Senior Religion Award. Joe was happiest on the baseball diamond. Joe was bitten by the sports bug, but baseball was his passion. He was the starting 3rd baseman on the BMC varsity baseball team and received Offensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player Awards. He was later named the Orlando Sentinel’s 2015 All-Area Top player list. Joe was diagnosed with hypodiploid acute lymphoblastic leukemia, a rare form of the disease, in December 2015. Joe passed away on April 30, 2016, in Dallas, Texas awaiting an experimental treatment. It was the day after the Senior Class Awards Luncheon, where he was awarded the Religion Award, a tribute to how deeply Joe embraced his faith. Less than a month later, his parents, Scott and Judy, along with his sister Molly, attended the Bishop Moore High School graduation and accepted Joe’s diploma. Bishop Moore baseball retired his #24 jersey and on March 2, 2017, Bishop Moore held a dedication of the newly renovated “Joe Skinner Field.” Joe’s quote in his senior yearbook was from Walter Payton: “When you’re good at something, you’ll tell everyone. When you’re great at something, they’ll tell you.” Joe is one of the great ones. Balance: $21,887 The 35th Annual Clark Christmas Classic was a great success this past December. Sixteen basketball teams spanning the state of Florida and neighboring states competed. While our Hornets fell short of hoisting the championship trophies, we congratulate Lake Mary Girls Basketball and Oviedo Boys Basketball for their inspiring performances. It was a special moment to see Mr. Bo Clark, a member of the iconic basketball family and Hornet hoops legend, cheering on the games during the honorary tournament. Special thanks to the Wennington Family, our generous presenting sponsor, and to Chicken Guy, our MVP awards sponsor. Their support of our basketball programs truly enhanced the atmosphere of the tournament. The phones are already ringing with teams seeking to secure their spot in next year's competitive Clark Christmas Classic! BMC Boys Basketball competed in the annual Hoops with a Heart game in December. This game meant so much to our program, and former coach Rob Graham was honored during the event. Coach Rob Graham graduated from Bishop Moore in 1990. He returned in 2004-2005, as a PE teacher and the Boys Basketball head coach. He previously coached for seven years at Embry Riddle University under Coach Steve Ridder. In just seven months, Coach Graham left a mark on Bishop Moore basketball that will stay with us forever. He touched the lives of his athletes, parents, Bishop Moore, and the Orlando community in a very dramatic way. As a player, Rob Graham was a member of our last boys' basketball district championship played in Tavares against Eustis in 1990. In the district championship game against Eustis, in 2005, as head coach for the Hornets, ironically in Tavares during the first minute of play, Coach Graham fell to the floor; his heart stopped, and after what seemed like a lifetime was transported to the hospital. He slipped into a coma. He awoke after 33 days on Good Friday. Coach Graham continues to fight hard every day. He led by example in everything that he expected of his students and athletes. Coach Graham preached blue-collar work ethics to his players and his students. He still cares very much for Bishop Moore, especially the basketball program. From time to time, he attends practices and games and sits with the team. In the days leading up to the December 9th game where the Hornets defeated Seabreeze 59-38, the Busch brothers, members of the last district title team in 1990, attended practice and emphasized how important playing for the appreciation of Coach Graham is for the Hornet program. It's impactful to tie our past Hornets to the present and inspiring to know how much Coach Graham and wearing the black and gold means to our alumni and current athletes. LEGACY LAY-UP In loving memory of Jim

ATHLETIC RECAP Bishop Moore Catholic’s Girls Volleyball Program has a storied history of excellence and a great reputation in the state and nation. This team, led for over 16 years by Tanya Jarvis Starrett '01, made it once again to the state finals game. In a nail-biting match-up against Gulliver Prep, the girls fell in four sets. GIRLS VOLLEYBALL STATE RUNNER-UPS WHAT A YEAR IT’S BEEN FOR THE HORNETS! The 23-24 school year picked right up where 22-23 left off and ended with emphatic finishes for many of our programs. BOWLING had a strong season that ended with a hard fought effort in the district competition. Six poised young women qualified and placed at SWIM & DIVE states with our girl Kiley G. ending her Hornet career with a 3rd place finish in diving. Both our GOLF teams competed valiantly at the state match, and our girls placed 6th overall. CROSS COUNTRY ran its heart out at the state meet in Tallahassee. FOOTBALL had an amazing season with nine wins in a row and fell just short of a state final four appearance. Nothing beat our postseason run by our GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM as they defeated Bishop Kenny in the state final four in front of more than 200 cheering Hornet students and then went on to claim state runners up! The winter was even better. GIRLS WEIGHTLIFTING saw Celena T compete in the state meet, and WRESTLER Angel P placed 6th at states, repping the Hornet on his singlet proudly. While our BASKETBALL TEAMS both had accomplished seasons on the court, they ran into rival Lake Highland Prep in the regional series and headed into the offseason determined to surpass the Highlanders in the near future. Our CHEERLEADING program proved to still be one of the very best in the state as the Hornets placed 4th in states. Our SOCCER programs were all business as usual with the boys finishing as state runners up for the third year in a row and our girls program cementing its dynasty by completing the 3-peat in state titles. The exclamation on the winter season occurred when our DANCE program followed the 3-peat mantra and won its third consecutive national title.

ENDOWMENTS RILEY OAKES '19 has overcome many physical challenges to compete in the sport that she loves. She knew that her love for softball was greater than any limitations others perceived her to have. As a young girl, she was diagnosed with auditory processing (partial deafness), dyslexia, ADHD, and diplopia (double vision). Many thought Riley would not be capable of playing a sport like softball at the collegiate level. But not Riley. She explained, “Softball was kind of like my escape from reality.” Riley is now in her fifth year playing softball for Florida Gulf Coast University and is considered one of the best players in the Atlantic Sun Conference. She doubles as an outfielder and a pitcher and has adapted her game to compensate for her challenges. As a result of her double vision, she sees shadows surrounding the ball. To track the ball better as a pitcher, Riley has turned into a slap hitter. When she is in the outfield she concentrates on distinguishing which of the two balls she sees is the actual one. Cat Clifford, FGCU softball assistant coach, claims, “I don’t think that there’s a limit on what Riley can do. I think she could be player of the year.” Mike Malatesta, former BMC Athletic Director and Coach states, “Riley was an intense competitor, whether it be on the pitcher's mound, in the batter's box, or running the bases. She worked hard to be the best she could be and to lead by example. I am not surprised at her success in college.” Once Riley graduates and finishes her softball career, she hopes to attend medical school and specialize in a field that will help athletes with disabilities like hers. She says, “I would like to prove to people that you can kind of do whatever you would like to do. You’re going to be the only person who stops you from doing that.” Riley thanks Bishop Moore for giving her so many opportunities. SHINING BRIGHT ON THE DIAMOND Another Hornet softball superstar, Olivia Miller '23, made Gator history! The team celebrated the first perfect game thrown by a freshman in Florida softball program history. Olivia made Gator history again 12 days later throwing a second perfect game. As a Hornet, Olivia led the Hornets to three district championships in 4 years. She had a 12-5 record her senior year with 214 strikeouts in 127 innings. Olivia was also nominated for top left-handed pitcher in the US in 2023. The Gary Burkey Student-Athlete Endowment This fund provides financial support for student-athletes who cannot afford the ancillary expenses required to participate in their sport. Interest from this endowment will be used to cover costs associated with in-season expenses which are a requirement of team members. Gary was an avid sports fan and this endowment was started in his memory celebrating his love of athletics. His wife Julie started this endowment. Grandchildren Blake '21 and Kate '25 are BMC Hornets. Balance: $26,064 The Hall Family Tuition Assistance Fund This fund exists to provide selected Bishop Moore Catholic High School students with tuition assistance needed to attend and receive a Bishop Moore Catholic High School Education. This endowment was started by Jon Hall '68. Jon is an avid supporter of Hornet Athletics. Hall Family Tuition Assistance Fund is a semi-restricted fund. Balance: $226,401 Michael Scheve Memorial Endowment Michael Lawrence Scheve, Class of '98, played on the '94-'97 basketball and '94-'98 golf teams. This endowment helps with financial assistance for students in need at Bishop Moore Catholic High School and Morning Star Catholic School. Michael Scheve lived a splendid life. He made the most of every single moment and touched countless people along his short, but spectacular journey. Michael also loved golf; he was long off the tee, while constantly struggling with his ‘questionable’ short game. But anyone who had the opportunity to spend a few hours on the course with Mike had an epic and hilarious experience. The Hornet Scramble was part of Michael’s Legacy. Michael’s Sister, Ann Marie Davis '96 is also an alumna of Bishop Moore. Balance: $182,326

Tyler Alsup, BMC alum and PhD candidate in Chemistry, worked with three University of Florida chemists to discover a previously unknown natural compound. Yes, you read that correctly! The researchers revealed a new terpenoid that is “biosynthesized in an unusual way.” Terpenoids, or isoprenoids, are a large and diverse class of naturally occurring organic chemical compounds found in all classes of living things. Terpenoid biosynthesis is widespread in nature and occurs in bacteria, fungi, plants, and several phyla of invertebrates. These chemical compounds have garnered significant attention for their diverse applications in pharmaceuticals, biofuels, cosmetics, and agrochemicals. Tyler looks back at his science roots at BMC and wishes to thank Mrs. Grady, Mr. Hage, Mrs. Dempsey and the team of teachers who introduced him to his love of exploration, research, and discovery. MADE FOR TV Carolyn Gerhart '18 1. Provide the background of where you are working and your current role. I am an anchor and Investigative Reporter for WTVY News4 owned by Gray Television, located in Dothan, AL. I began as an intern to finish my broadcast journalism degree in June of 2022. I was offered the position of full-time Multimedia Journalist (Reporter), graduated from Troy University with my B.S. in Broadcast Journalism on a Friday, and started full-time on a Monday! 2. Describe an experience during a live broadcast that did not go as planned. During one of my first few months as morning anchor, all of our prompters in the studio shut down. We have iPads with our scripts on them in emergencies such as that, but we have to look down to read. For the first 10 minutes of the show, I was looking down and up, up and down, trying to look at and talk to the camera, while also making sure I was relaying all of the news correctly. This was the longest 10 minutes, it felt like an hour! Thankfully, our engineers were able to correct the issue during a commercial break. 3. Tell us a little about a particular story you covered that has profoundly impacted you. One story that I will never forget though, was about a jail in Early County, Georgia that threw a Christmas party for inmates’ families to come and visit them. Officers dressed up as Santa and the Grinch, and every child was gifted a bike, among other gifts. But the real gift every child received was spending time, however short, with their incarcerated mom or dad. 4. What are your hopes and dreams for your career? I have always wanted to be on the Today Show. I have to credit my mom, Erin Gerhart '89. Growing up, she ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTS encouraged me to watch news, and interviews, and stay on top of the headlines impacting our world. GOOD CHEMISTRY Tyler Alsup '15 (Tyler pictured third from left)

THEY BLEED BLACK & GOLDWhen you think of Bishop Moore, what name comes to mind? We polled staff, alumni, and community members and the following names were repeated over and over of people who have left a legacy of love for Bishop Moore. Here are 10 Hornets, and arguably there are many others, who serve as touchstones to our beloved school and have left their indelible mark. 1. Maria Cao Laughlin '77 can be found on Friday nights during football season in the lobby of the Moore Center. Maria is Bishop Moore’s unofficial permanent greeter for football games, reunions, and special events. If you know Maria, and even if you don’t, she makes you feel right at home. 2. Mike Malatesta '71 knows more people connected to Bishop Moore than anyone else. Mike was active in high school and quarterback of the state championship-winning football team. Mike came back to BMC to coach from 72-77 and served as a member of the school board from 87-89. He returned again in 1998, to teach computer science and then served as Athletic Director for almost 20 years. In his current role as Alumni Director, Mike has been part of the faculty and staff of HORNET HIGH for 26 years. 3. Harry Nelson> There are so many things that can be said about Coach Nelson’s love for Bishop Moore. He preached “Be true to your school” and emphasized to the students to wear their letter sweaters. He spoke about life to his players more than football. He loved all his players and his students. When speaking about the history of Bishop Moore Football for a video, he said, “A lot of good things have happened to me over the years, and most of them have to do with Bishop Moore people.” He will always be “Harry the Hornet”! 4. Phil Love '74 has family ties to Bishop Moore. His mother was a Physical Education teacher at Bishop Moore for 20 years, four siblings and twin brother Tom, as well as his wife are alums. Phil has always stayed connected to his alma mater. And now he helps others stay connected, too. Phil is the admin of the Facebook page “The Hornets Nest.” If you want to know what is happening at Bishop Moore, like and follow Phil’s page. The Hornets Nest has over 2 thousand followers. 5. John Abeel '61 and Anne Sabin Abeel '67 both bring extensive knowledge of BMC from the '50s and '60s years, but more importantly, their love for their classmates and BMC is evident in everything they do. They are at all the homecoming events, holiday parties, alumni functions, class lunches, and reunions. John and Anne are the touchstones to many at Bishop Moore. 6. Larry Kelly served in multiple positions during his 32+ year tenure at BMC, including teacher, Dean of Students, Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, and Business Manager. Dave truly loved all things Bishop Moore. He was a board member, a fundraiser, a booster, and true connector to the school. If he couldn't personally support a project, he made sure to find those in the community that could. 8. Bruce Saulpaugh was an English teacher and a great storyteller. Mr. Saulpaugh had a remarkable ability to connect with students on a personal level, making each feel truly heard and seen. What set him apart was his willingness to share stories from his own life and adventures, and from those experiences, he imparted invaluable wisdom to us. His belief that the journey mattered more than the destination was a mantra he often repeated. Mr. Saulpaugh’s influence went beyond the classroom. As a coach and mentor, he positively impacted countless lives. He taught students not just about English, but also about life, resilience, and the importance of empathy. 9. GRANDPARENTS DAY Grandparents Day falls at the end of our week-long celebration of Catholic Schools Week. It is a fitting opportunity to thank our grandparents, who have played an important role in passing on the faith and keeping prayer at the heart of the family. We begin every Grandparents Day with the celebration of Mass. Deacon Paul Volkerson '69, alumni, past parent, and grandparent of Bishop Moore student Ella, who was the altar server at Mass, began his homily by pointing to Bishop Moore baseball’s state championship banner hanging in the gym. Deacon Paul proudly shared that he was a member of that winning team, the first state championship in Bishop Moore's history. Deacon Volkerson went on to share how being a grandparent was one of the greatest blessings of his life. Following Mass, grandparents and grandchildren enjoyed a full breakfast, family photos, and some took a campus tour. MOTHER/SON BREAKFAST At our Mother and Son Breakfast, our mothers reflected on the vocation of motherhood. Our young men were given the opportunity to express their heartfelt gratitude and love for their moms and reflect on their mission as sons. FATHER/DAUGHTER BREAKFAST Sister Kristi Bergman and Ashley Ell led the group of fathers and daughters through fun conversation sharing events from their childhood that related to their relationships with their fathers. The Father and daughters then participated in Father/Daughter Trivia.
