LEAVING

LEGACYA LASTING

What does it really mean to leave a legacy?

In the minds of many, it entails a lasting reminder of your presence in the world.
There probably could be no greater legacy to many than the creation of
an endowment which benefits future generations.

Dawn Michelle Aberwald Memorial Endowment
Financial aid for St. Andrew students to attend BMC
and a scholarship for the BMC Valedictorian

While at BMC, Dawn was a member of the National Honor Society, and similar to her older

sisters; Dana ’75 and Wendy ’80, graduated Valedictorian, class of 1982. Along with her

focus on academics, Dawn was involved in numerous clubs while at Bishop Moore including

Junior Achievement, Yearbook, Latin Club, and Tri-Hi-Y.

She was a loving and compassionate gestures were simple acts

Dawn M. Aberwald, DVM, 1964-2015 veterinarian. Her clients came to know her
as a voice for their pet and cherished her as

not only “Dr. A” but as a lifelong friend. As a co-worker pointed out, she had the human touch.

Dawn showed courage and selflessness that embodies the true meaning of Christianity. Never
complaining during her cancer treatments, she took the time to think of others. She threw a
baby shower for a friend and made delivering a birthday gift a priority even though it was the
last two weeks of her life. When she heard a client/friend’s dog was sick,
she sent a note even though she herself was much sicker.

Dawn, as well as her siblings, saw how much their parents sacrificed so they could go to St. Andrew and
BMC. They understood and appreciated the value of the education provided by their parents and recognized
that, next to them, the times spent at Catholic school were the most influential in determining the values best
demonstrated by Dawn in the manner described above.

This is the main reason her family felt it important to honor her memory in this fashion with
the full knowledge that Dawn would absolutely prefer to have them do this anonymously.

We believe it is consistent with Dawn’s nature to help others since she devoted her life to helping animals
and their owners. Hopefully this endowment can, in some small way, assist someone else in shaping
their life and if their studies turned toward Veterinary Medicine that would just be icing on the cake.

inspiring speeches from our honorees, and dinner and
dancing at the beautiful Rosen Shingle Creek.

This year’s Gala was well attended by over 600 guests,
including current Bishop Moore Catholic families and alumni
as well as other Catholic education leaders and supporters.
Their generosity, along with the sponsors, helped to raise
over $135,000 for the Legacy Fund, a keystone fundraiser
supporting the school’s efforts to provide students with
unparalleled education opportunities. This Fund provides
Bishop Moore Catholic students with resources to prepare
them for life success. This year’s Gala sponsors all deserve
a special thanks, especially the Black Diamond Sponsor,
Certified Financial Group and the Platinum Sponsors, the
Conte and Engelman Families. Their generosity makes this
event possible.

Four honorees were celebrated at the event for their
inspiring commitment and impact on Catholic education.
Fr. Paul Henry, Rector of the Basilica of the National Shrine
of Mary, Queen of the Universe, has been a champion for
Catholic education since his days as Principal of Melbourne
Central Catholic and of Father Lopez High School. Kevin
and Linda Shaughnessy were honored for their passion for
serving the most vulnerable in our community, including their
support of Bishop Grady Villas. Honoree Maureen Branham
‘81 has advocated Catholic education through her many
leadership roles in Catholic organizations. Each honoree’s
speech reflected on the importance of Catholic education in
their lives, and the lives of their families and communities.

The planning of the Gala took place for a year, lead by
our wonderful chairs: Cathy Engelman, Sonia Chater,
and Kathy Walker. They were supported by committed
volunteers who shared their many gifts and time making this
an amazing evening. Planning for the next Legacy Gala
is underway and will take place on November 4, 2017.

at both Holy Family and BMC, have been actively
involved in living out the BMC mission. As a
collective, they have donated over $4,000 to the Fund
for Bishop Moore Catholic. However, these students
aren’t just writing checks. They are engaged in active
service projects including a car wash and a collection
drive for the Orlando Rescue Union. After learning that
ORU supports over 100 homeless families, the students
held a winter clothing and personal hygiene donation
drive which resulted in 150 care packages filled with
shampoos, conditioners, lotions, soaps, toothbrushes
and toothpastes.
