Serving God’s children with special needs
since 1960

This summer, Bishop Moore Catholic hosted a Buddies Camp with their friends from
neighboring school, Morning Star Catholic. The camp paired students with and without
disabilities together for a week of fun and fellowship.

BMC students from all grade levels participated (including some incoming freshmen);
18 students total partnered with a dozen MSC students. Activities included kickball
(a camp favorite), basketball, dodgeball, tag, relay races, singing, lots of dancing,
arts and crafts, drawing, storytime, prayer, pizza, and snacks.

“We had such a fun-filled week together,” said JP Kuhlman, BMC’s Director of Mission
Effectiveness and this year’s Buddies Camp Director. “The campers especially seemed
to love any time they could team up with their BMC buddy in any given task; whether
that be blowing a cloud of bubbles into the air, running to first base in a kickball game,
or creating an artistic masterpiece together.”

Our BMC students did a tremendous job caring for our MSC campers. “I was blown
away by the maturity of our BMC students,” said Mr. Kuhlman, “including the young
ones! They stepped up to the plate and really engaged with their buddies in every way;
from helping during snack time and demonstrating how to clean up a table, to praying
with them and playing countless games and sports together.”

According to Mr. Kuhlman, “It was also inspiring to see the interactions between BMC
students. They bonded over this week of service and encouraged one another in their
acts of love. It seemed like they pushed each other to be great throughout the week
("As iron sharpens iron" Proverbs 27:17), especially on mornings when some of them
were tired. The gift of their time and joyful energy was what made the camp so special.”

One of the highlights of the week, for Mr. Kuhlman, was on the last day when
MSC campers drew their BMC buddy a "thank you" drawing.

“The things they came
up with were beautiful
and it showed our BMC
students how much this
week meant to their
MSC friends. We can‘t
wait to do it again
next summer!”

Proceeds from Buddies Summer Camp went to support the programs and services offered by Morning Star Catholic School.

THE BISHOP MOORE CHOIRS, under the direction of Sarah

Purser, provided a spectacular fall concert this year, performing several selections relating to the Diocesan and school theme
of “Made in the image of God.” Each choral piece related in some form or fashion to this theme, along with several soloists
providing an exquisite contrast of musical styles, all performed with professionalism and good taste. Students submitted pieces
for consideration and were asked to provide a rationale as to how their pieces fit the theme.

Tim Conyers has recently been appointed as the new Choral Director at BMC.

He comes to the school with 20 years of experience in music education at all grade levels
in the area of choral, instrumental, and music theory. Tim has taught over 10 years in the
Diocese with the last 5 at Holy Family Catholic School, developing a top rate choral and
instrumental program. He has a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from UCF,
Graduate choral and conducting training from Southwestern, and a Master of Arts
from Liberty University. In addition, he has performed locally and regionally in
various venues as a professional musician. “Coming to Bishop Moore as
Choral Director is certainly a privilege and honor. Sarah Purser has built
a very solid program with quality performing groups over the past
several years, and I look forward to carrying on the tradition and
hope to take our school to the next level.” Go Hornets!

BACCALAUREATE MASS & COMMENCEMENT

We were determined to not allow the pandemic to halt this rite of passage so instead
of holding the celebrations off site as we typically do, the events were held on campus
on the stadium field. It was no small feat to accomplish this task. It took many hands to place over 1,000 chairs on

our field, to orchestrate the audio visual needs of the events, and to maintain a safe environment for all of our attendees.

The weather could not have been more perfect and the dusk setting provided a magnificent backdrop for our Baccalaureate
Mass celebrated on Sunday, May 23 by Bishop John Noonan. The Commencement Exercises took place the next morning
and we conferred 305 graduates of the Class of 2021. Valedictorian Marcus Lisman shared this inspirational thought with
his peers: “Each of us has our own path and we will encounter outside influences that try and pull us away from that path,
but we must be strong enough to realize that we ultimately have the ability to determine our own destiny. The good news
is that there’s another person who knows our path: God. We are not perfect, but He is, which means He knows what we
need to do to remain on the right path that leads to a life of true fulfillment.”

The tough part is coming up with an original concept which

CHRISTINE CSENCSITZ ‘11

There are two types of college freshmen. The first, “I have a plan
and a path. I know what I want to do with my life.” The second,
“Plan? By the end of college, I’ll know what my path is.” Upon
graduating from BMC, Christine Csencsitz had a plan but along the
way, she found her calling in a path unplanned. She attended
the University of Florida studying Political Science and English
Literature focusing on History and the Classics. She then became a
double Gator attending UF Levin College of Law. Her plan was a
best laid one, but God is always working and had another idea.

“It started while studying for the Florida Bar. I was working as a
legal aid focusing a lot of my time on domestic violence cases. I
loved writing, specifically creative writing, so I began blogging as
my creative outlet,” she said. “Writing is a natural extension [of her
degree].” Christine loves the research and the analytical problem solving aspect of law but also has a passion for the creativity
that the liberal arts, writing, and blogging provides. Could she combine the two?

Suddenly, her blog began gaining traction. The ah-ha moment we all wait for! “I never thought I could do a lifestyle blog. But
then, people were reaching out asking me to write about their product and were gifting items for me to blog about. I realized that
this was something I needed to dedicate more than just 25% of my brain and time to.” Cats & Coffee, Christine’s blog, covers
a wide array of topics including history, food, entertainment, movies, fun things to do in Tampa Bay, podcasts, books, and of
course, coffee! Christine stated, “I felt bad because I didn’t think I would be using my degree but it wasn’t true. If I do my research
and push myself to try new things and stuff, I’m doing my readers their due service. If I enjoy it then maybe others will too. And I
still do freelance copywriting.”

The transition had its challenges. “No one really comments on blogs anymore so you’re almost talking to a void. You have to

ANDREW WADE ‘15

Much like his days at BMC, Andrew spends
his time on the basketball court. Although, now
he is no longer surrounded by Hornets, but by
Mystics. As a member of the Washington
Mystics coaching staff for over three memorable years, Andrew’s

role is to support the athletes through on the court work, film,
and the creation of specified workout plans.

Andrew always knew he wanted to work in the sports industry, majoring in Business
and focusing on Sports Management at Catholic University. At a Sports Business
conference at George Washington University in 2019, he was approached by a
staff member of the Mystics and has been a proud member of this team’s family
ever since. He acknowledges that the family atmosphere at BMC prepared him to
be part of the Mystics family. “At Bishop Moore, I learned about becoming part of
something bigger than myself,” he remembers.

As a Hornet, Andrew’s favorite memory was the mission trip to the Dominican Republic
which holds a special place in his heart. The highlights of his experience were teaching
basketball and other sports to the children on the mountain. “With sports, the
language barrier doesn’t exist anymore and we can all connect to each other.”

2020. What a year to be a part of the WNBA! Playing “in the bubble” from July
to October included daily Covid testing, isolation from the outside world, and
pumped in fake crowd noises in empty arenas. Although this took some getting used
to, Andrew recognizes the blessings that came through the adversity. The team and
coaching staff strengthened their familial bond and united together in their love of the
game and their willingness to overcome these challenges together in order to play.

When asked about the disparities in the treatment of female athletes in the NBA system,
Andrew said he hopes for a time when all athletes will receive the same amount of respect.
“Take time to watch and listen. If you’re a true sports fan, you’ll see the same level of
competitiveness and skill set in the WNBA.”

Andrew is inspired by what he sees every day from the Mystics. “So much negativity is
thrown at pro athletes and they brush it off and are able to keep playing at such a high
level. I find it inspiring.”

CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY

As an on-going assignment in Dr. Luckenbill’s
Multicultural Literature class, each Friday two
students share presentations that celebrate
either a food, game, or song that's significant
to their own culture or a culture that interests
them. One student, senior Isabela S., brought
her father's domino set, a set that the family
considers quite precious--it even has his name
engraved on each tile.

Isabela taught the class about her own family's
love of dominoes and how central it is to their life
at home. The names of family members are even
engraved on their domino table, and they play
together daily. She said her dad was so excited that she was doing the presentation, he wished he could come to class
and challenge her classmates to a game!

The class learned together that even though some sources suggest domino tiles were invented by the Chinese, the game has
been a staple in many Hispanic cultures for generations. It was exciting to hear the Hispanic students in class sharing stories,
like Isabela's, of being taught to play at a young age, playing with parents, grandparents, and siblings on a daily basis
even now, and having relatives who play in competitions.

After her presentation, Isabela taught small groups of students to play dominoes together while the rest of the students took
turns sharing which games are significant in their own families and cultures. It was exciting to see them educate each other,
connect, and have fun while learning and celebrating culture.

FAITH-IN-ACTION THROUGH WORDS

Bishop Moore's Speech & Debate Team,
after its 6th year in existence, regularly ranks
among the top 5 most active charters in Central
Florida. This past two seasons (2019-2021) the
team has grown by leaps and bounds entering
the top 5% of teams nationwide.

All of this is a testament to a high level of activity and
growth among our competitors, who continually sharpen
their skills in public speaking, critical thinking, rhetoric, and
advocacy. Over the past two years, two Bishop Moore
students also qualified for the prestigious
Academic All-American award through NSDA by earning
over 750 NSDA points over the course of their high school
careers while also achieving at least a 3.6 GPA.

While we appreciate seeing this level of success in our team, we value more the growth of our students through participation and
the bonds of community and mentorship that grow between our varsity and novice students. This partnership has born excellent
results as younger and less experienced team members benefit from both the example and guidance as they hone their own skills.
Our students will find these life skills are then present not only for competitive speech and debate events, but in their classes and
everyday life. The mission of NSDA is to help each student find a "voice" to advocate for what is important to them. We hope
that through involvement in Bishop Moore Speech & Debate our students develop this voice to help them advocate for themselves
and others and profess their faith through actions and words.

MOORECENTERFOREXCELLENCE

On Wednesday, May 26 at 6:00 PM, we welcomed over 120 constituents
to celebrate the dedication and blessing of the Moore Center for Excellence.

Bishop John Noonan was on hand to assist
Principal Dr. Erika Wikstrom, President Thomas Doyle,
Superintendent of Schools Henry Fortier, and Pastor,
Reverend Ralph DuWell in cutting the ceremonial
ribbon. Father Ralph DuWell blessed and sprinkled
every room with holy water. The attendees received
a guided tour of the new facility and were awed by
the multi-purpose space that resembled a building
typically found at the collegiate level. The showpiece
of the facility is a 50 ft hornet that extends across the
glass façade of the entrance. Other stand-out features
include a merchandise store, lecture hall, state-of-the-art
weight room, and 7 classrooms that are used for
interdisciplinary studies.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

DANRISHA YOUNG ‘05

Transferring to a new school can be tough. Now, imagine transferring
to a new school on the other side of the state. There was no need to
imagine that for Danrisha Young having moved to Orlando from South
Florida in 2002. She quickly realized the Bishop Moore Catholic
community was much like her former school providing an environment that fosters and grows
their students’ Catholic faith. BMC instantly felt like home. Even when faced with the toughest
challenges, her faith and this community saw her through.

“Regardless of what you want to do, don’t get discouraged. Sometimes the hardest things you do in life end up being the
most important.”

In a single-parent home, Danrisha experienced hardships with finances as her mom struggled to make ends meet. Mentally,
she prepared to have to leave BMC her junior year but prayed she could stay. That’s when life-changing tuition assistance
became available which bridged the gap between the money she earned and contributed from her work at Universal
Studios and the overall cost of tuition. This provided the opportunity for Danrisha to take one of the first Java/Programming
classes. It was here that she found her love of technology and programming, leading her to UCF for her Bachelor’s degree
in Information Technology and then Nova Southeastern for her Master’s degree in Management Information Systems. She
made the most of each opportunity and challenged herself to greatness:

“Things don’t get easier even though you get older. Tech is always changing, so you shift and anticipate the change.
I use this as a motivation to keep getting better.”

Since earning her degree, Danrisha has achieved great success in her tech career, working for Verizon, Amazon, and now
as a Senior Manager of Software Engineering for Capital One. She realizes the impact Bishop Moore Catholic had in forming
her in faith and academics and desires to give back so other students in challenging financial situations can experience all
her alma mater has to offer.

In addition to her contribution to our tuition assistance fund,
this alumna offered some words of encouragement to current
