FARAWAY FARM
202-204 Scaife Road, Sewickley Heights
WELCOME TO FARAWAY FARM
THE HISTORY OF FARAWAY FARM
William C. Robinson, Jr. and Mary Oliver Robinson had Faraway
Farm, located at 202-204 Scaife Road built in 1938. The home was
designed in the Georgian Revival style by the “society architect” John
Nelson Franklin of Franklin & Brown.
The Georgian Revival style is a subset of the Colonial Revival
style, which was very popular in the early 20th century and the
style is considered to have developed in reaction to the excessive
ornamentation of the Queen Anne style which was popular in the
late 1800s. Georgian Revival features of Faraway Farm include the
house’s rectangular, side-gabled construction five bays wide, tall end
chimneys and centered, pedimented entryway. The home is rumored
to have been patterned after a stone house outside of Lexington,
Kentucky, possibly the circa 1791 guest house on the grounds of
Poplar Hill Farm which was owned by Mary Robinson’s family.
The Robinsons were born into prominent manufacturing families
and were popular Sewickley area socialites. Newspapers from the
time reported that the couple were involved with many activities
surrounding the Allegheny Country Club, including the annual horse
show, and the fox hunt. William C. Robinson, Jr. would become
president of National Electric Products Corporation in Ambridge and
serve on the board of directors for many local institutions.
