Project Guidelines
OBJECTIVES ADDRESSED IN PROJECT
IT-IDT-4 Identify, describe, evaluate, select and use appropriate technology.
4.1 Identify hardware device functions, including peripherals devices, input devices, and portable
hardware appropriate for specific tasks and emerging hardware as it impacts information technology.
4.2 Demonstrate understanding of set up a basic computer workstation.
a. Identify various computer types, internal components, connectors, monitors, keyboards, mice,
printers, computer voltage, and power requirements.
4.3 Describe and explore current and emerging software, including operating systems and application
software.
a. Explain the function and purpose of software tools.
4.4 Compare and contrast various hardware and software options for personal and business use.

Student Activity - Create an Instruction Manual
OBJECTIVE: The goal is to create a manual that a person with NO computer experience could use to build
his/her own computer. Use the knowledge that you have learned in this class to write an instruction manual on
“How to Build a Computer”.
REQUIREMENTS:
1. You may work with a partner.
2. Your instruction manual should be very detailed. You are to explain each step in detail as to what
you should do.
3. Manual should include pictures of all major parts.
4. You can use the Internet to help you create the manual.
5. Must cite all of your references for your instruction manual.
6. Your manual can be created on the computer or by hand or a combination of both.
7. Make sure that you use bullets or numbers to help define different steps.
JUDGING: Your classmates will judge your manual at the end of this project based on its readability and its
correctness.
Items for your instruction book:
• Tools needed – include safety tools
• Parts needed – discuss basic computer parts needed
• Case – talk about replacing the plate on the back to match the ports on the motherboard
• RAM
• CPU
• Heatsink and Fan for CPU
• Motherboard – talk about standouts
• Hard drive – talk about ribbon cable
• CD drive – talk about ribbon cable
• Floppy drive – talk about ribbon cable
• Connecting Speakers, Power LED, etc. cords
• Video Card
• Connecting the Power Supply – talk about different types of connectors (molex, mini, P1, P4, etc.)
