1.0 Self-introduction

I, Gabriel Kong Chee Han, 18 years old IPGKS student from Sibu, Sarawak. I
am Chinese and a Christian. I weigh 72kg and 178 cm tall with BMI 22.7. I applied Malay
course for primary education because I became more open-minded and my mind influenced
by the attitude and way of imparting knowledges of my tuition teacher. She is not greedy or
selfish in sharing her own knowledge and experience to prevent her students from wrong ways
to success. I will motivate myself as well and emulate her role model which shown by her so
that my students who are capable or will inherit the helm of our beloved country’s leadership
can be successfully revealed later. I also do regular body-checked up every year in order to
ensure that my body is healthy and take early steps because prevention is better than cure.
When I came to IPGKS physically, I met many friends from other zones and we played
badminton, cycling and jogging around the campus together to maintain a good health.

2.0 Introduction

As our society having progressed in such a striking rate, the health problem has
raised public awareness and its give us many cons. Good health become a part and parcel of
everyone’s life. Health can be defined as the condition of someone’s body or mind and the
state of being physically and mentally healthy. The word of Health defined by World Health
Organization (WHO) is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not
merely the absence of disease or infirmity (What is good health, 2020). We should remember
Mahatma Gandhi said this once “it is health which is real wealth, and not pieces of gold and
silver” (Himashu Sharma, 2015). Personal health is very valuable and should be well taken
forever. We as first-minded natives must practice a healthy lifestyle by taking various
systematic ways to ensure our own health in order to become an excellent person who can
contribute energy to our country.

3.0 Personal health issues

Work from Home (WFH) Obesity problem occured

Cause negative impacts Reduce weight by negative ways

Sakini Mohd Said (2020, para.1) said that “throughout the Work from Home
(WFH) because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many women and men complained on social
media about their increasing weight.” Obesity has brought many negative impacts to members
of society such as suffer from chronic diseases. This has caused some members of society
who are too concerned with the image and appearance of themselves have taken wrongs
steps that threaten health to lose weight.

As an illustration, some members of society neglect a balanced diet to avoid
eating too many fats and carbohydrates that will increase their weight. Weight will increase
due to carbohydrates that are the main source of energy and then the activity is not carried
out a lot will cause the energy stored in the body is greater (Rosmha Widiyani, 2019). They
will also adopt the habit of one day of one meal only in small quantities to avoid eating too
much. This will cause some problems or negative impacts to their body and health.

4.0 Impacts of unhealthy body

No. Details
1. Obese people bullied by others.
2. Cause death and suffer from chronic diseases.
3. Mental and physical disease.

Adolescent social health will be affected by obesity (Puhl & Latner, 2007).
According to Norfadilawati Alias and Fuziah Shaffie (2015, page 2), states that “social health
caused by obesity can be affected and burden the well -being of adolescents from various
aspects of life.” Obese individuals will face problems like lack of friends and will be bullied or
ridiculed through discriminatory views or called by unpleasant nicknames. To demonstrate, fat
people, “Why you so fat and ugly” and so on which will offend, sadden them and have been
told by people around them. This will cause they do not dare to undergo physical activity and
communication sessions. They will be embarrassed and not dare to talking to others for fear
of the views of others.

Example for obese people bullied by words and others.

In addition, obesity will threaten a person's life to death because it will cause a
person to contract a chronic disease. Obese individuals find it difficult to carry out sports
activities and lack of exercise causes fat not to be burned and blood vessels become clogged.
This will cause a person to have a stroke or develop heart disease and high blood pressure.
Stroke or heart disease will cause a person to die at any time and this disease needs to be
more emphasized by any individuals.

Furthermore, some obese members of the society have taken the way of
neglecting a balanced diet and eating in small quantities in order to lose weight. They think
avoid taking fat, cholesterol or carbohydrate foods will help them control their weight. For
example, they only care about consuming foods that contain a lot of fiber such as vegetables
or fruits and drink plenty of mineral water and avoid fried bananas, fried chicken or burger.
This act will not guarantee their health and will not be able to strengthen the child’s endurance
physically, emotionally or spiritually. These will cause some health problems such as:

• Eating disorders such as Anorexia nervosa in the future. [Anorexia nervosa is an
eating disorder which characterized by gaining weight, abnormally low body weight
and a distorted perception of weight (“Anorexia Nervosa”, 2018).]

• Punctured stomach.
• Develop stomach cancer.

Aneroxia nervosa.

5.0 Ways to maintain a good health
5.1 The role played by schools

Knowledges of health and ways for maintain a good health should make
known to students when teachers are teaching so that can affect their minds
and be more open-minded about health issues.

At the same time, good moral value should disseminate by teachers when
activities “Pengajaran dan Pemudahcaraan” (PpPc) which can influence the
minds, attitudes, behaviors, speech of students continuously in a more positive
direction by not looking down on anyone with a discriminatory view.

The effective initiative that can be taken to overcome the problem of obese
individuals who are bullied and ridicules is that teacher need to work diligently
in exposing students to polite language by issuing polite words that can give
encouragement to others

The words of encouragement will let them feel happy and they will be more
open-minded to put more attention on their health and weight then take more
activities which can maintain good health.

7

Responsibility and attitude which shown by the teacher will be role model of
students and let students to distinguish right from wrong so as not to bully others
especially obese students verbally instead give them words of encouragement.

Teachers need to give strict punishment to discipline students who have negative
behaviour especially bullied obese students. The punishment given is not cruel in
nature but just give a lesson to students.

5.2 Campaign organization
Developed countries often have health problems such as obesity and become

increasingly serious in non-developed countries, especially in cities (Bahagian Kawalan
Penyakit Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia, 2011). So, the statement clearly proves that
awareness to community members needs to be emphasized and many campaigns or
programmes need to be organized. Online campaigns or activities themed on the importance
of personal health need to be held a lot around our country from time to time. This can open
the eyes and minds of community members to maintain their own health by taking many
pragmatic ways such as eating a balanced diet or exercising a lot to burn fat. The campaign
was also able to broaden the horizons of thought and widen the gates of thought and enlighten
their minds to know more and realize that the benefits of an individual are healthy and free
from chronic diseases. Campaigns on personal health serve as convey message and raise

8

awareness in the community about the ways and impact of controlling one’s own health. At
the same time, pamphlets and leaflets about health issue should be given to all sot that can
keep informed them about pros to maintain a good health and effects of unhealthy body.

Example for online campaign and leaflets.
5.3 Balanced diet

Moreover, members of the community can ensure their own health by always
adopting a balanced diet that contains 7 main classes such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins,
vitamins, minerals, water and fiber in the appropriate food ratio for each meal. They are
encouraged to eat lots of fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of fiber or fiber as a function
of preventing constipation. At the same time, they should not ignore carbohydrate foods that
can give us energy even if it will increase our weight. Community members are encouraged
to prepare food by following the food pyramid so as not to consume more fats or cholesterol -
laden foods. Obesity can be overcome if the individual has a balanced nutritional diet in the
routine activities of life. Community members should avoid eating too many junk foods or
carbonated beverages such as shrimp crackers and Coca Cola. With a balanced diet, it can
control the rate of obesity and reduce the risk of suffer from disease.

6.0 Conclusion
In short, a comprehensive healthy lifestyle needs to be practiced more by all of

us as it will bring many benefits to the strata of society. An optimistic individual will adapt in
taking care of their own health and avoid or stay away from chronic diseases that will threaten
the harmony and happiness of their lives which affect daily life. A person’s health cannot be
compared to achievement, employment, academic and co-curricular results, wealth or rights
because loss of health means loss of all. Let us take proactive initiatives in order to become a
healthy human capital that can contribute energy to our beloved homeland, Malaysia.
