BIODATA

Associate Professor Dr Azidah Abu Ziden is a Senior Lecturer in School of Educational Studies,
Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). She is currently the Deputy Director of the Centre for Development of
Academic Excellence (CDAE), USM. Her research interests are in Instructional Design (E-learning & M-
learning), Educational Technology, ICT & Multimedia and 21st Century Learning. As a National E-
learning Master Trainer, she conducts training to lecturers/educators in the area of instructional design,
e-learning approaches and tools, and new approaches of teaching and learning nationally and
internationally.

Dr Azidah is the recipient for the prestigious Anugerah Akademik Negara, 2017 (Anugerah Pengajaran).
She has also been awarded Anugerah Ketokohan (Honorable Award, USM (2017). She was also the
recipient of the Gold Award for Best Learning Model (Blended) in LearnX Impact Award 2018 in
Melbourne, Australia. Dr Azidah has been appointed as MQA Assessor in ICT, Multimedia and ODL
since 2011.

SYNOPSIS

“Trip and tricks in Developing Self Instructional Materials (SIM)” will guide lecturers in preparing
teaching and learning materials for to enable learners to be self-directed in the ODL environment. The
session will introduce lecturers in analysing learners and their process of learning from self-learning
materials. Concept and use of self-learning materials more meaningfully will be covered in order to help

lecturers to prepare self-instructional materials for their students.

CURRENT RESEARCHS, PAST RELATED RESEARCHS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
Associate Professor Dr. Azidah Abu Ziden is the recipient of the 10th Malaysia Academic Award (Anugerah
Akademik Negara) 2017. Her expertise is on the Instructional Design (elearning and mobile learning), ICT,
Multimeda, Web 2.0 and 21st Century Teaching and Learning. Her PhD studies involved the use of WebCT
(Learning Management System) to support students’ learning through online discussions in Higher Education. She is
an expert in Moodle and an active user of elearn@USM. Currently she is the coordinator of elearning.usm.my. AP
Dr Azidah has also developed a model called “Types of Interaction Model” to evaluate how students interact and
involve in online discussions forum in the LMS.

She was the Coordinator for Teachers’ Graduate program of USM for 7 years which invloves three thousand
teachers in Penang, Kelantan, Sabah and Sarawak. The program utilised Moodle as the main platform for teaching
and learning and as the coordinator of the program, she also managed the ppgusm.com platform and facilitate students
(which are all teachers) as well as the lecturers in using the platform. She conducts trainings for both teachers and
students and facilitate them in using e-learning as the main communication and teaching and learning tools in the
program.

She is currently active doing research on various topics on teaching and learning especially related to e-learning,
educational technology and ICT including EPortfolio, teachers’ technology competencies, Preschool children &
technology as well as Inclusive Open Educational Resources (iOER) under Unesco. She has also involved with the
Mobile Learning team (Research University team grant – RM450k) Sustaining Education Through Mobile Learning
Using Pocket Education. The project has succesfully developed the quiz application for SMS in 2012 where more
than 1200 students have piloted the quiz application and most of the students found that the quiz application is
useful for assessment and learning process. Through a Knowledge Transfer Program grant from the Ministry of
Education, Malaysia, she conducted various training for teachers and students in schools ecpecially in Northern
corridor of Malaysia to enhance their ICT skills and introduce new approaches in using technology in schools. The
project has gone beyond the implementation in the specific school, where the project has successfully implemented
to other schools, JPNs and other government bodies.

AP Dr Azidah is also interested in social media research for academic teaching and learning for higher institutions in
particular in the use of microblogging and ipads for teaching and learning. She has also conducted a Seminar on
Educations Towards 21st Century Learning for the Northern Corridor

Malaysian Higher Education Institutions on June 29, 2013. The seminar attracted 250 participants from Malaysia
Northern Corridor HEIs. She also appointed as the Master Trainer of USM where she conducted Training of
Trainers to USM lecturers in terms of instructional design, e-learning methods, strategies and tools, as well as new
approaches in teaching and learning in the 21st Century and IR4.0. She also conducted Training for Trainers sessions
nationally to cater the need for specific courses. Specifically, the trainings she has conducted includes:
