THE LEO LEGACYPROGRESS OF BEYOND360“International Relations and Volunteering”Guided by the compelling theme of \"BEYOND360°\", the International Relations Avenue of LeoClub of University of Kelaniya launched anendeavor that crossed geographical limits andreimagined the essence of international Leofellowship. This year-spanning project unitedemerging leaders from diverse continents tochampion environmental responsibility, crosscultural harmony, and collective impact.The initiative commenced with virtual meetingswith international Leos. This exceptional chance tospeak with them through online meetings, thisinitiative established the foundation for whatevolved into a profoundly impactful and globallyconnected journey. Dialogue flourished, conceptstook shape, and enduring relationships were forgedthrough this encounter that honored cross-bordercamaraderie. Thank you for being here!To get us started, Leo LionRageesh, could youintroduce yourself to usfirst?I am Ragish Yogeswaran. I amcurrently serving as theMultiple District President ofLeo Multiple District 306 SriLanka & Maldives.2. And since every greatjourney starts somewhere...what was the specific sparkthat made you join the Leomovement?When I started my HNDcourse, I met a senior whowas involved in the LeoMovement. I got interested init after seeing one of hisFacebook posts. Heexplained to me that it wasfun, interesting andsomething that I could getinvolved in. One morning hecalled me on the phone andasked,“Would you like to jointhe Leo Movement?” Iagreed.At that time, the ColomboCity Leo Club was inactive.After it was reactivated, I hadthe opportunity to becomeone of its original members.Page 14 of 70
the leo legacy3. What is your fondestchildhood memory?I failed the Grade 5scholarship exam. At thattime, most people in societyonly helped and praised thechildren who passed theexam. It was as if we wereforgotten. At that time, Ithought,“I also want tosucceed.” It doesn’t have tobe about education, Idecided that I want tosucceed somehow.I am always the kind ofperson who tries to do itwhen someone says,“Youcan’t do it.” I never give up onanything.I was veryinterested in sports. I was arugby player, a footballer anda chess player. My dream wasto become a cricketer. I alsowanted to join WW andbecome a lawyer.But today my biggest goal isto become a film director. Sofar, I have made 3 short films.Those films have beennominated and won awardsin Sri Lanka. I have alsocontributed to projectsrelated to cinema direction,cinematography andassistant direction.I am currently working as theMultiple President of the LeoMovement. My main goal inthe future is to create a bigfilm in the future.Page 15 of 70

How has your Tamil cultureand the environment yougrew up in influenced youridentity and leadership stylein the Leo community?My parents wanted me towork, run a business, takecare of property and houses,and take on familyresponsibilities. They werenot very keen on socialservice or joining suchorganizations.But I am different. Ifsomeone asks me for help, Idon’t hesitate. I try to do itanyway.I had a large circle of friendsand connections since I wasa child. But after joining theLeo movement, thosefriendships and connectionsgradually started todecrease. But even thoughthose connectionsdecreased, my leadershipskills gradually developed.That is why I was able tomove forward and take onleadership roles.Page 16 of 70

Moving to your currentrole as Multiple DistrictPresident, how do you helpdifferent clubs work togetherand ensure everyone isheard?There are over 200 Leo clubsin the Leo movement in SriLanka. Many of them areperforming well. Inparticular, I have seen howthe clubs fall into three maincategories.First, there are clubs that arebased solely on awards.Second, there are clubs thatdo not pay much attention toawards and enjoy doingprojects. They do not paymuch attention to benefitsor awards. Third, there areclubs that do good workdoing projects and are happyif they receive awards butcontinue their work even ifthey do not receive them.I am proud to say thatalthough there are Leomovements in othercountries, Leos in Sri Lankaand the Maldives do morethan in many othercountries. In addition topersonal development, Leosalso do many social servicetasks that the governmentshould do.Also, this Leo movement actsas a training period beforeentering the professionalworld. Skills such asreporting, management, andteamwork can be learnedhere. Therefore, those whohave joined the Leomovement are able to workwithout much pressure whenthey enter the professionalworld.

Since we are part of aninternational family, whathas been your bestexperience so far workingwith foreign Leo Clubs?When I was the president ofthe club, there was a plan tostart religious activities.Accordingly, all the 6districts came together andsuccessfully implemented itas a project.Then the project that startedas an “International TwinningProject” grew into an“International Joint Project”today. I contacted foreignLeos through Facebook andInstagram and asked them ifthey would like to conductprojects together. Theyagreed to it, and initiallytheir plans includedactivities such as treeplanting, distributing booksand school supplies. Later,they grew into bigger andmore impactful projectssuch as blood donation.One of my best memorieswas donating books andschool supplies to 100children from a rural area inRatmalana. It cost about Rs.200,000. At the same time,foreign Leos also conducteda similar phase in their owncountry.Finally, I have one request.Often, Joint InternationalProjects are led by foreignLeos. However, I request thatour Sri Lankan Leos alsocome forward as hosts andchairpersons of suchprojects. Then we will havemore opportunities to shareour ideas and experienceswith them.
Page 19 of 70the leo legacy7. Can you Describe 'being aLeo' in just one simplesentence?It is discipline andconsistency. There are manyleaders today. But if youstop halfway withoutconsistency, it is difficult toget back to that position.Therefore, discipline, timemanagement and properplanning are essential.You don’t need a whole dayto do projects. If you planand organize well, you cancomplete them even within1–2 hours. Many people say,“we are busy, we don’t havetime”. But I believe that Leosociety is about yourpersonal growth.Enthusiasm is also veryimportant to succeed. If youdo this because ofsomeone’s influence orbecause someone told youto, it will be difficult tosucceed. But if you do itwith your own passion anddedication, you can moveforward stronger.8. Leo lion Rageesh, is therea specific phrase or quotethat motivates youpersonally?When someone says,“Youcan’t do this,” I do it withmore enthusiasm.For example, I am a MultipleDistrict President today, notby luck or by someone’srecommendation.
Page 20 of 70the leo legacyFrom the day I joined, I waspressured from differentparties. But I was able toovercome them andsomehow succeed. I alwaystell myself,“If you can’t dothis, no one can.”I learn from my DistrictPresidents and they learnfrom me. We believe that ifwe do not do well, the nextgeneration may also do thesame. Therefore, we mustmotivate ourselves.Here is a person I would liketo mention. That is myformer Multiple DistrictPresident, Lion RajithaAbeygunasekara, who worksas a consultant at theUniversity of Kelaniya. WhenI was a Club President, hesaw my leadership potentialand said,“You will beDistrict President or DistrictVice President.”When I ran for District
Page 21 of 70the leo legacyPresident, I lost by 2 votes.But that didn’t stop there.Later, I served as RegionChairperson and ZoneChairperson.With the support of RajithaAiya and others, I againapplied for the position ofDistrict Vice President andwon with 89% “Yes” votes.There, using my skills to thefullest, I finally becameDistrict President with 100%“Yes” votes.Leo Lion Rahula Attanayake,the Multiple DistrictPresident at the time,introduced me as “one ofhis best District Presidents.”It was Rajitha Aiya whogave me the initialmotivation when I was ClubPresident. Similarly, it wasRahula Aiya who gave methe strength to moveforward for the MultipleDistrict President position.9. Looking at where youstand today in this topleadership role, how proudare you of the journeyyou’ve travelled?I am where I am todaybecause of the LeoMovement. I would nothave gotten to this pointwithout joining. Although Iam not particularly talentedin academics, my leadershipskills developed when I wasappointed as the teamcaptain in the school sportsfestival.I actually became a captainnot because of myleadership qualities, butbecause of my height. Butthat point was where myleadership journey began.During the 12 years I havebeen involved in the LeoMovement, I have learnedmany new things. Thoseexperiences and learningshave shaped who I amtoday.Next year, I hope to start

When I firstjoined the Leo Movement, Idid not even think that Iwould even be able tobecome a Club President.But today I can proudly saythat I am serving as theMultiple District Presidentfor 12 districts. This is asignificant change in the SriLanka Leo Movement, as ithas been created as aMultiple District comprising12 districts, and I am itsfirst Multiple DistrictPresident.10.To leave us with onefinal thought—as someonewho has reached the peakof Leo leadership, what isyour message to a youngperson starting theirjourney?Let’s put aside the newLeos, I like to tell currentLeos, explain to yourparents what you are doingand what projects you aredoing. Get their support.For example, involve yourparents in projects andmeetings. When they seewhat you are doing withtheir own eyes, they will beconfident that “our child ison the right path.”For example, my parentsstill do not fully understandthe role I play as MultipleDistrict President. They donot fully understand thehuge structure of 12districts, more than 10,000members, and more than200 Leo clubs. But if youintroduce the Leomovement to your parents,especially when you havefailed, you will have theirsupport.The best time to start theLeo movement is duringschool. Usually parents sayfirst Montessori, then

Such amovement should beincluded in it, especiallyNGOs like the LeoMovement.Show parents what we do.Then they will have anunderstanding and interestin this. Then they will alsoencourage their children tojoin such projects.Also, current Leos shouldprovide a correctorientation for newmembers.First, what is Leo, about thehistory of Leo and thehistory of Lions, secondly,why this started, what wedo here and what are ourfuture plans, and finally,what are the responsibilitiesand roles according to thepositions in Leo. There areconstitutions (by-laws) andguidelines in the LeoMovement. They should beintroduced to newmembers. I really wanted to bea part of an organization that just participated indifferent kinds of events. I had a friend namedBipin, and who introduced me to this club, LeoClub of Gaurishanker. He told me about how theirclub participates in different events. He also toldme about how their club basically works, not onlyabout Leo club of Gaurishankar, but overall. Leoclub stood out to me because of its focus onleadership, service, and I guess youthempowerment. That motivated me to join.
