YIDU FIRST TEAM

First Team Report
The request from the boss is to improve.
Last year third, could we be second or first? Having beaten Sheffield at West End in
the last match of the season in 2017 could we win at Worksop in the first match of
2018?

The answer was no, Sheffield would once again win the league with a played 7 won 7
record.

We finished second, not putting a foot wrong having lost that first match. The group
believe, want to play and when we need some steel someone provides it, exceptional
shot, clear thinking. This was most evident when playing Leeds at Bradley Park, lost
the foursomes, not looking good in the singles but we pull through 19 – 17. Victories
on the road at East Riding and York and all the home fixtures Leeds, Bradford,
Harrogate and Teesside, gave us 12 points.

I used 21 players and myself throughout the year, four of these players also
represented the junior team Matthew Holden, Isaac Turner, James Edwards and Harry
Mowl, the last 2 receiving their ties for 6 matches.
Graham McLean reached 100 appearances for the Union, 22 years of being good
enough and wishing to play, remarkable! I’m not so sure the Union will have another
centurion.

The leaders of Order of Merit were Tom Hunt and Josh Morton, they have not
accepted their prizes but wish it to be used for coaching. This is a mark of their
willingness to achieve the squads’ goal, a YIDU Championship.

The Team Championship at Knaresborough, where by handicap the team assembled,
was the best for some years. This didn’t transfer into the scores and we finished fifth
again behind East Riding who won it for the first time in 45 attempts. They had the
highest cumulative handicaps. Our target for 2019 will be to improve our position
although we were only 7 shots adrift after 12 rounds!

Junior Team Report
Well what a season it was.
Who would have expected that?
Previously played 13, won 2 and couldn’t raise a team for one. Target for 2018,
improve.

In 2018 it was played 7 won 7. History made.

To the players who showed skill, tenacity and belief when it was needed.
That important birdie by Adam at the 17th at Crosland Heath to ensure we sneaked
past Leeds. The victory at East Riding when it didn’t look likely, showing the mettle
required to become champions.
By this time the group had bonded they understood what was possible and
embraced it.

The team were magnificently led by James Edwards, not just through his golf but his
character. Of course, he went onto prove what a talent he is by becoming Match
play Champion.

This was a squad thing and having played their part we say bye to James Edwards,
Seb Crabtree, Tom Pearson, Lewis Eccles, and Kian Sutcliffe. I wish them well in all
they do.

Having won the league, we could no longer surprise the opposition and although
confidence was high, we could only manage 3rd in the Team Championship at
Headingley but the battling spirit was evident and may be in the next two years as
the team develops this will come to us as well.

To the parents who bought into an idea and transported their sons to matches I
thank them and hope the memories of what was achieved remains for a long time.
For many we’ll be having another go in 2019.

part, it was fun.

To conclude I feel it was George Hanson that holed a putt at the 17th at Ripon City
that ensured we couldn’t lose and yes that moment that piece of history still brings
a tear to my eye.
