| 53 | RADIOMIR: THE MAKING OF A LEGEND For over a century, the Panerai family legacy has been intertwined with precision instruments made to accompany the Italian military in their exploits. Commissioned by the Royal Italian Navy to supply high-precision instruments, it was Guido Panerai’s Radiomir - a radiumbased substance that illuminates for visibility in the dark – that began it all when it was patented in 1916. An archival receipt shows that the Radiomir prototype was presented in 1935, and over the years, the sandwich construction has been progressively adjusted and is currently made of only two superimposed plates. Other improvements include the crownprotecting device, and a new luminous substance, the Luminor. A watch produced strictly for the military, the forces used it until the early 1970s, with its designs protected by military secrets. In 1996, Officine Panerai leaped into the commercial watch market in 1992, launching three collections of ten references in limited editions - the 44 mm Luminor and Luminor Marina watches and the 42 mm Mare Nostrum chronograph, which were presented on 10 September 1993 at the La Spezia military harbor in the presence of Duke Amedeo D’Aosta, son of Sir Aimone di Savoia, the then supreme head of the Italian diving department. Radiomir was only made public in 1997 when the Vendome Group – today Richemont Group – acquired Panerai, introducing the first Vendome special edition in sixty pieces - the PAM 21 model in a platinum version. The acquisition advanced Panerai’s history into contemporary developments from the reopening of the historic boutique in Piazza San Giovanni to the establishment of the Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâtel where fine Swiss watchmaking meet innovation driven by an Italian soul. With a century of innovative instruments developed for performance in response to evolving technical needs, Panerai projects into the future via research, strategic partnerships, sustainability, and empowering modern heroes. These initiatives include eSteel™, a next-generation metal obtained from pre-consumer recycled steel scraps (up to 95%) coming from different industries, preferably from Swiss watchmaking industry, whose production significantly reduces CO2 emissions, and a partnership with the IOC-UNESCO to develop solutions with the aim of building a more sustainable, equitable society. In 1888, ZENITH filed a trademark for the French term “Pilote”, followed by the English version “Pilot” in 1904. In the years that followed, ZENITH would become one of the preeminent makers of specialized watches and dashboard instruments for pilots. Today, ZENITH continues to uphold and build upon this unparalleled heritage with the latest generation of the Pilot collection. Entirely redesigned from scratch, the all-new Pilot collection foregoes the vintage aesthetic for something that draws inspiration from the entire span of aviation – past and present. PILOT AUTOMATIC The template for the new generation of ZENITH Pilot watches, the Pilot Automatic revisits the collection’s aesthetic codes in an outstanding silhouette full of subtle details. PILOT BIG DATE FLYBACK The ZENITH Pilot collection simply wouldn’t be complete without a chronograph reference. And for this latest iteration, ZENITH has gone a step further by developing a new version of its El Primero 3600 calibre, with a host of new functions that have been specifically conceived for the Pilot. The Pilot Big Date Flyback comes in two distinct versions, both in a 42.5mm case. The stainless steel version takes a page from one of the most distinguished El Primero Flyback chronographs, the aptly named “Rainbow Flyback”. The chronograph’s minutes totalizer is done in alternating colours to more easily distinguish between the five-minute marks. The central chronograph seconds as well as the chronograph minutes hands are done in a bright orange tone, another nod to the iconic El Primero Rainbow from 1997. The black ceramic version takes on an achromatic, utilitarian look with luminescent white markers and hands contrasting boldly against the opaline black corrugated dial. In terms of performance, the new El Primero 3652 automatic high-frequency chronograph calibre integrates two functions to the 5Hz chronograph that are a perfect fit for the Pilot: the big date and the flyback function. Beyond its easy readability, the oversized date display in the Pilot Big Date Flyback features a next-gen patented compliant mechanism that advances and stabilizes both of the big date’s wheels in less than 0.03 seconds. Originally conceived for aviators who wore thick sheepskin gloves, the flyback function allows the chronograph function to be reset to zero and restarted by a single push of a button, simplifying the pilot’s operations and offering the possibility to record consecutive times without stopping. The redesigned Montblanc Sartorial Collection features bags and smaller accessories in softer leather with a deep two-tone effect, new colors and the introduction of a modularity system that allows small pieces to be attached to larger bags – creating new functionalities, styling options and many customization possibilities. Inspired by the beauty and experience of handwriting, the design codes for Montblanc Sartorial are rooted in the Maison’s writing culture heritage. DESIGN How would you describe the Swarovski philosophy and what is your personal vision for the brand in Cyprus? Style has evolved. For Swarovski, style is a state of mind and at Swarovski we evolve with the times. Our brand was founded in 1895 and Swarovski has always transformed and reinvented itself, while staying true to its DNA. This is why our brand is our first and most valuable asset. As ambassadors representing the brand on the island, our goal is to continue providing our consumers with the best customer experience. We draw on our rich heritage and unique savoir-faire to elevate the customer experience every day. What can you tell us about Swarovski’s SS24 collection and its inspiration? The SS24 collection, designed by our new creative director, Giovanna Engelbert, is inspired by the interconnection between water and crystals and it explores the magic and mystery of the deep. Abstract interpretations of sea life take shape through domed coins, suggesting sea urchins, and beautiful crafted fluid waves that recall water. Figurative motifs include starfish and seahorses, while the geometric beauty of seashells is captured in shimmering styles. In SS24, Swarovski styles new statement jewellery with our beautiful icon pieces in fresh new colours. The brand thus furthers its innovation while maintaining the heritage of its 128 years of craftmanship. Talk to us about the concept behind the recent remodelling of the Swarovski boutiques in Limassol and Nicosia. What do you expect them to bring to the Cypriot market? In 2021, Swarovski decided to add a new chapter to its success story, lifting the brand’s centre of gravity to attainable luxury and becoming a true crystal lifestyle brand. It started by launching unique and luxurious jewellery designs, with upgraded packaging using new materials and colours. Even the octagon shape of our displays and trays represents rebirth. The idea of the new brand strategy campaign was also to introduce a new architectural concept revealing a new brand identity. A new Wonderlux concept boutique was implemented at the Mall of Cyprus in November 2023 and it is important to note that this was the first such boutique in the Greek and Cypriot markets. From your experience as Sales Manager, how do you see consumer demand evolving and what does the modern customer want from a luxury jewellery brand? Today’s consumers do not wish to purchase mass-produced jewellery – they want pieces that make them feel unique. They have become more responsible in their shopping habits and their impact on the environment. Digital consumers are looking for simple and effective solutions to fit their needs, so they don’t mind spending more if necessary. In my opinion, what customers want is the unforgettable shopping experience that a luxury brand can offer, plus an exquisite aftersales service, which will meet their needs and inspire them at the same time. What is the significance of a luxury accessory in the contemporary world and to what extent do you believe that this is influenced by social media? First of all, I believe that accessories give us an opportunity to add a personal touch to our style and to express our individual personality. Luxury accessories are considered as such due to their craftmanship, the materials used, and the hours spent on their creation. Luxury products are timeless and made to last, which adds value to each purchase. Social media always helps us present our products more directly and efficiently to our consumers. However, for this reason, we have observed that the value of the product is diminished in the mind of the consumer, whose expectation on the pricing is less than the reality. So, while social media does impact the way we market our products, we should be cautious of how these platforms are used in order to achieve the best results for the brand. DESIGN What was your vision when undertaking this project and in what ways did you incorporate each brand’s individual style and needs into your designs? I was very pleased to undertake this significant project, as these shops are the first boutiques of their kind to open in Cyprus. Their prime location makes them stand out as they are located in an area with high footfall, right next to the entrance to the casino and are visible once you enter the Resort and while waiting in the lobby. So, this enhances their visibility and integration into the overall casino experience. It was very important to achieve an aesthetically pleasing result, which does not take the eye of the visitor from the Resort’s entrance but nonetheless highlights the identity of their luxury products. The design for each boutique was studied and developed separately in terms of the interior but, at the same time, we worked on all the facades to create a picture of harmony, while ensuring that each boutique retains its own autonomy and identity. As a result, they emerge as a whole but each one stands on its own. How would you describe the architectural features of each boutique? Each boutique has its own unique style. The Cartier boutique’s design epitomizes a harmonious blend of sophistication and timelessness. On entering, you are immersed in an atmosphere of refined luxury, with attention to detail in every aspect of the space. The interior features a combination of rich materials including warm wood, lustrous metals and sumptuous fabrics, all meticulously selected to evoke a sense of richness. The lighting is carefully orchestrated to accentuate the brilliance of the diamonds and highlight the intricate details of the designs. Every detail and item is very carefully placed, selected and curated to offer a luxury experience that showcases the brand’s commitment to excellence. From the grand architecture to the smallest display detail, the Cartier boutique’s design creates an environment that not only displays the brand’s exceptional creations but also serves as a testament to the enduring allure of Cartier’s artistic vision. The Hublot boutique has the famous “Art of Fusion” motto, which also applies to this new design, through a combination of materials, such as mirrors, glass, marble and metal. Integrated innovative lighting solutions showcase the products effectively. The boutique also pays tribute to the art world by being decorated with large Pop Art-style works inspired by the iconic models of the watchmaker. The Zenith boutique’s design is a harmonious synthesis of style and substance, embodying the precision of artistry that defines the brand. The interior incorporates elements of Zen aesthetics and involves clean lines, neutral colours and minimalistic elements to evoke a sense of simplicity and tranquility. It features natural and high-quality materials like glass, luxurious wood and polished metal for a modern yet timeless feel. It prioritizes open spaces with ample natural light to create a sense of openness and connection with the surroundings. It utilizes a minimalist approach with clean lines. The Damiani boutique can be described as having a classic Italian flair in its distinctive, elegant and sophisticated atmosphere. The space is adorned with exquisite materials, including plush fabrics, polished metals and high-quality stones, reflecting the brand’s commitment to craftsmanship and exceptional jewellery design. The lighting scheme is artfully orchestrated to enhance the brilliance of diamonds and gemstones, creating a mesmerizing ambiance. Ultimately, a Damiani boutique design aims to convey the brand’s commitment to luxury, craftsmanship and timeless beauty, creating a memorable and indulgent experience for customers. How did you make sure that the design of the four boutiques blended seamlessly with the surrounding environment? The City of Dreams Mediterranean Resort combines luxury, excitement and elegance in a remarkable manner, so the design of the boutiques should reflect a similar level of opulence, so that they become a harmonious part of its surroundings, creating an environment that feels natural and welcoming. We have used highquality materials, elegant furnishings and sophisticated lighting, all of which contribute to creating a luxurious atmosphere that resonates with the casino setting. We aligned the boutiques’ façade design with the overall theme and aesthetics of the casino, using similar colour schemes and materials. We focused on creating a harmonious and complementary relationship so that the four boutiques blend seamlessly with the casino environment. Can you provide examples of how you have integrated innovative and creative solutions into your designs? One of the challenges – and innovations – of this project concerned Turning Vision into Reality Architect Myria Constantinidou took up the challenge of bringing to life her vision of the Cartier, Hublot, Zenith and Damiani boutiques inside the City of Dreams Mediterranean Resort. The founder of Myria Constantinidou Architects talks about how she went about the crucial task of giving form to a brand vision of opulence and luxury and stresses the importance of innovation and attention to detail. | 90 |


the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) regulations, which we were asked to follow by the Resort’s management. That was their main criterion for assessing the rating and certifying the sustainability of the whole casino area. Every single item and material selected for use in the design of the boutiques had to comply with the BREEAM regulations. We have managed to infuse sustainability into the design, by incorporating eco-friendly materials and energyefficient lighting, and showcasing the brand’s commitment to environmental responsibility. We have also integrated smart technologies such as sensors, automation systems and energyefficient solutions to enhance the building’s performance, sustainability and user experience. What are the main elements needed to create a luxury space? Crafting a luxury space involves meticulous attention to detail, the incorporation of high-quality materials like marble, granite, fine wood and metals. A sophisticated colour palette, both classic and neutral, enhances the sense of opulence. The design includes thoughtful lighting to add ambiance, along with comfortable custom-made furniture and unique fixtures. High-quality art and décor are seamlessly integrated to complement the overall theme. The creation of private and exclusive spaces within the design further contributes to the luxurious atmosphere. A successful luxury space design hinges on the synergy of various elements, creating an environment that not only showcases premium products but also immerses customers in a world of refinement and exclusivity. What was the greatest challenge you faced during the implementation of this project? One big challenge involved the setting up of the metal structure and ensuring that everything was placed according to our detailed plans so as to fit the interior panels, which were manufactured and delivered from abroad. Generally speaking, the design and supervision of the work required an excellent knowledge of the materials, practices and expertise used abroad, and of course there was a specific time schedule. As part of ZENITH’s expanding presence to serve its customers around the globe more personally and immerse them in the Manufacture’s unique world, ZENITH is delighted to announce its first boutique in Southern Europe, on the island nation of Cyprus. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by friend of the brand DJ Carl Cox, who put on a special performance for guests in attendance. The opening of the new Cyprus boutique was the perfect occasion to present the latest boutique-exclusive edition, the DEFY Skyline Sapphire. A modern successor to the very first ZENITH DEFY wristwatch model from 1969, the DEFY Skyline seamlessly merges the past and present with bold architectural lines and unwavering robustness that have become hallmarks of the line. While deep blue tones inspired by the starry night sky have become a signature of many ZENITH Boutique Editions, the DEFY Skyline Sapphire doubles down with brilliant gemsetting. The steel dodecagonal bezel is set with 45 baguette-cut blue sapphires, further embellishing the metallic blue dial with a four-pointed star geometric pattern. They have supported ZENITH for nearly twenty years, catering to both a local community of enthusiasts as well as tourists in the Limassol region. The ZENITH Boutique is conveniently situated in the main hall of the City of Dreams Mediterranean, the European Union’s first integrated resort and casino. With 500 rooms and almost 2 million visitors expected in 2024, City of Dreams is a one-of-a-kind destination combining exceptional services and experiences. At the centre of the resort’s luxury district, the ZENITH boutique takes on a vertical design, with a blue sky streaked on the ceiling mirrored by the blue carpet leading the way from the entrance to the mural visual of the Pilot collection. ZENITH UNVEILS DEFY SKYLINE SAPPHIRE AT NEWLY OPENED CYPRUS BOUTIQUE | 92 | EVENTS During the inauguration of ZENITH’s first boutique in Cyprus in September 2023, with local retail partner Vassos Eliades, the Manufacture presented the dazzlingly blue DEFY Skyline Sapphire, its latest boutiqueexclusive edition. As part of ZENITH’s expanding presence to serve its customers around the globe more personally and immerse them in the Manufacture’s unique world, ZENITH is delighted to announce its first boutique in Southern Europe, on the island nation of Cyprus. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by friend of the brand DJ Carl Cox, who put on a special performance for guests in attendance. The opening of the new Cyprus boutique was the perfect occasion to present the latest boutique-exclusive edition, the DEFY Skyline Sapphire. A modern successor to the very first ZENITH DEFY wristwatch model from 1969, the DEFY Skyline seamlessly merges the past and present with bold architectural lines and unwavering robustness that have become hallmarks of the line. While deep blue tones inspired by the starry night sky have become a signature of many ZENITH Boutique Editions, the DEFY Skyline Sapphire doubles down with brilliant gemsetting. The steel dodecagonal bezel is set with 45 baguette-cut blue sapphires, further embellishing the metallic blue dial with a four-pointed star geometric pattern. It comes on an integrated steel bracelet, with a blue patterned rubber strap also provided to make the most of the case’s ingenious quick strapchange mechanism that requires no tools. The DEFY Skyline Sapphire in 41mm is powered by the El Primero 3620 automatic high-frequency calibre, featuring a 1/10th of a second indicator that’s driven directly from the 5Hz escapement. It features a power reserve of approximately 60 hours and is endowed with a stop-second mechanism for precise time-setting.
