The past 2 years was a challenging one especially when the Covid-19 Pandemic has affected every aspect of people’s well-being, with far-reaching consequences on how we live and work. We were forced to adapt to the abrupt change in the teaching and learning process. Alhamdulillah, despite all the difficulties that we went through, we managed to brave it all, with the cooperation and support from everyone involved. From this experience, we are now betterready mentally and physically to face the ever-changing world that will come and test us in the years to come. To our beloved G21 students, this is a beginning to a challenging and exciting phase in your lives. Keep on pushing, keep striving for success; and if ever you feel like giving up, remember, “Persistence and resilience only come from having been given the chance to work through difficult problems.” “Bilde Dich selbst! Und dann wirke auf andere durch das, was Du bist!” – quote from Wilhelm von Humboldt Herzlichen Glückwunsch und alles Gute für die Zukunft! Danke schön SALWANI ABU BAKAR
PROGRAMME BRIEF PRE-UNIVERSITY PROGRAMME (GERMAN A-LEVEL PREPARATORY PROGRAMME)GAPP Germany land of many opportunities, renowned for its technology achievements and the German higher education is one of the best in the world!. A German university degree is highly respected by employers around the world and those from the Universities of Applied Science are very practice-oriented. For these reasons, the German A-Level Preparatory Program (GAPP) was established at the German-Malaysian Institute in 2001 to prepare and qualify young Malaysians to further their study in the fields of engineering at the University of Applied Science which requires GCE A-Level, TestDAF and Vorpraktikum qualification for enrolment. Upon completing their 22 months of study at GMI, the GAPP 21 (GAPP intake 2021) students will undergo an intensive language programme for 7 months in Germany. GMI has established collaborations with 6 language centers in Germany since 2010. The 6 language centers and partner universities for GAPP are: 1. Language Center Bildungskolleg Weilheim 2. Language Center Sprachzentrale Leipzig 3. Language Center IIK Düsseldorf 4. Language Center IIK Berlin 5. Language Center TH Deggendorf
GAPP SUCSESS STORY
Muhammad Aman Bin Ahmad Tifli GAPP16; MARA Sponsored Hochschule Augsburg, Computer Engineering (B. Eng.) Graduated 2022 Currently pursuing a Master’s degree at the Technical University of Munich while employed as a Software Engineering WorkingStudent at KUKA Germany. The GAPP program at GMI provided a strong foundation which helped me face the many challenges of pursuing an Engineering degree in Germany. Doing A-Levels while learning German was not easy for any of us. The German language was very foreign to us all, but the teachers at GMI were very helpful and gave us the guidance we needed to learn German well enough to survive and thrive. When I first arrived in the state of Bavaria, I was pleasantly surprised to find the country to be more beautiful and more rich in culture than I expected. I was also excited to start traveling around Europe to see as much as I can in the neighboring countries around Germany. However, I soon realized that studying in a German university was not going to be easy, and for the first few semesters I spent most of my time just adjusting to life here and learning how to cope with the many obstacles in my way. Not only was the course content difficult (even for native Germans!), but being taught engineering subjects in a language that was new and foreign was an added obstacle. Making friends also turned out to be harder than I thought it would be. Here in Bavaria, many of the students speak in their own native dialects and tend to use words that I’ve never read or heard of in my language courses. The students also grew up in a completely different culture and have a different way of thinking and acting. Even so, I thought it was important to push myself and mingle with the local students to gain a better understanding of the culture and finally feel more comfortable so far away from home. I ended up befriending a group of local students and we constantly helped each other in our course work. At the end of the day, a good support network of friends, both from Malaysia, and from Germany, was key to helping me figure out how to live life here. Nowadays, I split my time between writing software for exciting projects at KUKA Germany, and studying for my Master’s course in Robotics and AI at the Technical University of Munich.
Dominic Wong Gapp 16 RWTH Aachen, Maschinenbau B.Sc (Mechanical Engineering). Graduated 2022 Currently pursuing a masters in Robotics, Systems and Control at ETH Zürich. Software and computer vision engineer at Mantis Technologies, Zürich (ETH spin off) My praise for the GAPP program goes to the incredible teachers/TTOs and brilliant peers. The TTOs were very dedicated to ensuring our success. There was nothing left to be desired in terms of our preparation for the A-Levels and for our future in German. I have never felt disadvantaged at the start of my studies at RWTH Aachen, thanks to the strong foundation the TTOs helped me build. At GMI, I also met some of the most hardworking and inspiring peers that undoubtedly enabled me to reach where I am right now. I started my journey in Germany in the charming city of Mannheim. I undertook a 6-month language program at the Universität Mannheim. These were some of the best 6 months as I picked up a new language, learned to be independent and met dozens of interesting people from all over the world. A friendly tip to all prospecting students: find a host family. This is, in my opinion, the best way to immerse yourself in their culture and language. Next, I started my academic studies at RWTH Aachen. There is no way to sugarcoat my (and undoubtedly almost everyone’s) experience of studying in Germany. It is not easy. Yet, it was totally worth. Sometimes, I wonder at how surreal and impressive it is to have completed an engineering degree in a completely foreign language. I especially felt motivated and excited at a “Universität”, where I could learn about and contribute to cutting-edge research. After my graduation in Spring 2022, I decided to carry this energy forward and continue my academic studies at ETH Zürich. Here I continue to be exposed to and involved in interesting research in robotics. Next to my studies, I gain valuable insights and experience in industry through my work as a computer vision and software engineer at a local startup.
Aniq Danial Bin Annis GAPP 16; MARA Sponsored Hochschule Augsburg, Mechatronics Engineering (Bachelor of Engineering) Graduated 2022. Currently working as Robotics Simulations Engineer in HLS Sacha Engineering Group Being a student in GMI and a part of GAPP was a very memorable experience indeed. Both teachers and friends were always helpful and there to support my journey both during in GMI as well as in Germany. I was a part of the student representative body in GMI, which gave me some insight on how it would feel to work with other students, something you are going to experience a lot while studying in Germany. In all honesty, I would consider myself to be an average student and my German was decent at best. But the thing I learned being in GMI helped me to mentally prepare myself for the hurdles I was going to experience here in Germany. I was also the president of the MARAKumpel Malaysian student society here in Germany back in the year 2021. I had to juggle studies, some extra co-curricular activities I joined as well as managing the Malaysian MARA students here. But my friends from GMI were always there to support me nevertheless and alhamdulillah I managed to pull through. I am currently working as a Robotics Simulation engineer in one of the engineering firms here in the same city I studied, Augsburg. I made sure to really mix around with the locals which helped me to improve my German proficiency as well as improve my understanding about the German culture, something I always reminded myself to do both in the University and at work. Based on my experience as a student here in Germany, it is important that you leave your comfort zone and really dive and understand the culture. Of course, that being said, never forget your roots and principles. Mix around with the locals, make some German friends at the University, force yourself and be confident when speaking the language, and try to take part in some activities / sports too. By doing all these, I’m sure that each and everyone of you will do great things here in Germany. Your friends are always here to support you and seniors are always ready to give a helping hand and some guidance. Don’t be afraid to reach out! Wishing everyone the very best of luck and looking forward to seeing new faces here in Germany soon !
Muhammad Syafiq Bin Abd Sukor GAPP14 / MARA Sponsored University of Applied Sciences Coburg / Mechanical Engineering (B.Eng) / Graduated October 2020 Currently working as a test engineer at SEMPA SYSTEMS GmbH, Dresden in the field of gas and chemical supply system for clean room surrounding and semiconductor industry. Firstly, on behalf of the Alumni German A-Level Preparatory Program (GAPP), I would like to congratulate all of you on a job well done! You overcame all the hurdles and you are the most resilient and brave who managed to succeed in spite of the demanding circumstances in GAPP. Allow me to share my personal experiences during my time at GMI and bachelor studies in Germany. GAPP was something challenging yet interesting on how it prepared myself before my journey in Germany. The atmosphere between students and lecturers during A-levels in GMI was something valuable in terms of the knowledge itself. A-levels was never going to be easy especially with learning German alongside. However, it taught me one thing that success needs process. My journey in Germany began in Leipzig with other 17 Malaysian students. The fear for German examination (TestDaF) was real and it was a huge challenge to adapt fully to a new language in a new country. The support system at the language center was very important in helping us to survive for the first 6 months in Germany. Learning German language was in fact interesting and with the chance to live in Leipzig, it proved to be a new experience for myself to explore the language, culture besides to prepare for German language examination. The challenge throughout the 4 years as a mechanical engineering student will always be something that I appreciate especially going through all the learning processes to gain a bachelor's degree in Germany. It is important not to lose sight of our goal in Germany and have a study plan to cope with the challenges such as to understand and revise the German taught lectures besides to manage our group task or projects at the universities. However, never forget to enjoy the process and the journey in Germany which will be a valuable experience later in our life. Apart from that, it is important to create a healthy and good surrounding or get involved with community that could motivate yourself throughout the journey. My involvement with Malaysian organization such as MARAKumpel and later with AZIMJerman proved to be important for my communication and social skills which helped me indirectly during my time at the universities. Being with the right people helps a lot and with the right attitude we will prevail in our journey. I am grateful to have the chance to study in Germany and have this opportunity to bring good values later in Malaysia. I wish you endurance and confidence as you embark on this next chapter. If you seek advice, do reach out to fellow GAPP Alumni to gain useful knowledge and be a part of successful Malaysian in Germany in the near future.

Valedictorian Speech JEREMIAH KEEPAT ANAK WESTMORELAND Guten Morgen und ein herzliches Willkommen an Dr. Peter Blomeyer, Botschafter von Deutschland in Malaysia, Prof. Ir. Dr. Azmi Hassan, der geschäftsführende Direktor des GMIs, Ts. Fahrul Rizal, der stellvertretende geschäftsführende Direktor für Corporate Service, Ts. Dr. Muhamad Farid Daud, der stellvertretende geschäftsführende Direktor für Academic und Operation, Frau Salwani Abu Bakar, Leiter des FPGS Departments, Herr Muhammed Fadley Che Mud, Sektionsleiter des voruniversitär Studiums, die Sektionsleiters, Leitungsteam von GMI, die Lehrer für die technische Ausbildung, die Eltern, die Familienmitglieder, und meine lieben Freunde. Praise be to God, it is an honour here, to deliver my speech as the Valedictorian. I am truly humbled that GMI found me worthy to be awarded this prize. First and foremost, I would like to give my utmost gratitude to my parents, mein Papa und meine Mama, who have cared and supported me since the day that God gifted them to me. You both are my heroes; words cannot express how much I love you both, but everyday I try to show it, and I thank God for both of you. I would also like to express my gratitude to my siblings and relatives who have supported me in this journey, always bringing me up, especially in times when I feel down. It is an honour to continue in somewhat a family tradition, that began with my grandparents and parents, in pursuing their dreams of a better life through education. The dream of studying in Germany, the country that offers the best education and experience of engineering, could not have been fulfilled without the help of MARA, sponsoring many of us for our education. On behalf of G21, I would like to thank MARA for giving us this opportunity to further our studies to Germany through the Young Talent Programme. Before receiving an offer from MARA to study in GMI for the A-Level and German Language Studies, I had never actually heard of GMI. However, from the first day of my orientation, despite having to go through it online, I was able to foresee that I would create good memories here, in this esteemed institute. During my study, I was not only involved in academic work, but fortunately I was able to be elected by my fellow batchmates as President of GAPP. Being president really shaped my life in GMI, as I became more confident in speaking and leading, as well as building up relationships, not just with my batchmates, but with Diploma students, the juniors (G22), the authorities of GMI and even the parents of my batchmates. GMI welcomed us with open arms, and so I would like to show my gratitude to the managing directors, the GMI Management Team and the FPGS Department for ensuring a wonderful study and stay in GMI for us students. I also want to show my appreciation to our TTOs for teaching my friends and I all that we needed to learn to prepare for our exams and the knowledge needed to prepare us to go to Germany. To the TTOs who taught us, Ms Cynthia, Ms Norsashikin, Ms Nurfauziah, Ms Zarina, Ms Noorhayati, Frau Fatehah, Frau Bhavitra, Frau Rowinah, Sir Arif, and others, you are our symbol of strength. Thank you for being patient and caring towards us. I would also like to highlight the role of both Frau Salwani Abu Bakar and Herr Muhammed Fadley Che Mud, who have been an unwavering source of support for all of us, especially to me as President. On behalf of the G21 batch, I would like to say thank you so much, we are truly grateful for your kindness and support. And of course, my deepest appreciation goes to my friends, my batchmates. From day 1 in GMI, meeting through Zoom and Google Meet, we finally made it to the end. All those days of going to class, all the nights studying, burning the midnight oil in the Hostel to understand concepts, remember facts and correcting grammatical errors, we have finally pulled through the A-Level examination. It is an honour to have gone through all of it with you. I know this is still a long journey, but I believe that this moment in our lives is a big stepping stone for us, to pursue our dreams in the field of engineering. And by God's grace, many of us will continue that journey in Germany, and I am thankful that you all are part of that journey with me. To those staying on in Malaysia, walk on and press forward to achieve your goals in engineering and other disciplines. My dear friends, as we are about to go our separate destinations, remember we are pressing on together, you'll never walk alone! The time here in GMI is coming to an end, and on behalf of G21, I would like to pass the torch to the juniors, G22. Some words of advice to G22, and maybe to others in the hall, do not play around, but in all things, study hard, study smart, stay curious and be diligent. Do not be proud, but have humility and respect for your TTOs, elders and friends. Do not try to do things on your own, rather seek help from friends, and offer help to those who need it. Of course, keep on enduring by setting your goals not on wealth, or glory and fame of studying abroad or getting good grades, but set your goal on helping others through the knowledge that you will acquire through GMI. For we are in the position to advance in the field of engineering, and help to build up our country one day, and as the saying goes, it is more blessed to give than to receive. Lastly, I give honour and dedication of this award to Almighty God. For it is by His grace alone that I am here today, and I live every moment because of His mercy. Because He lives, I too may also live, and I can do all things through Him who strengthens me. Thus, I give glory to God in the highest. Before we move on, on behalf of the G21 Batch, we would like to share a short video montage of our memories here in GMI So as I end my speech, I would like to invite my fellow batchmates to stand up for a while, turn around and bow to give our utmost appreciation to TTOs, Parents and GMI Management. Wir möchten alles sagen: Vielen Dank! Das ist alles von mir, vielen Dank für eure Aufmerksamkeit. God bless you all.
