Understandings
These are a few of the IC understandings that are the most applicable. You will
find them in full in the Welcome Packet.
Coaching is a relationship I have with my coach that is
designed to facilitate the creation/development of my
personal or professional goals and to develop and carry
out a strategy/plan for me to achieve those goals.
Coaching includes increasing professional effectiveness
and results for students.
Understandings
I want you to be satisfied with the process of coaching. If I ever say or do something
that upsets you or doesn’t feel right, please bring it up. Authentic and open
communication between coach and teacher are required for this relationship to work.
It is necessary to implement the coaching conversation for the coaching to be a
success. Because you have great capacity and great challenges in your work, you
have been selected to receive this special individualized professional development.
This development will provide you the opportunity to do things differently than you
have ever done before.

Partnership Principles
(Knight, 2007) These 7 principles will form the foundation of our work together.
Equality – Each person’s thoughts and beliefs are held to be valuable
Choice – One individual does not make decisions for another. Decisions are made
collaboratively and each makes his/her own choices.
Voice – All individuals must have opportunities to express their points of view.
Partnership Principles
(Knight, 2007)
Dialogue – Partners encourage others to speak their minds and do their best
to listen authentically and fully understand what the other person is saying.
Reflection – Each individual is free to make sense of whatever they are
learning. Partners do not dictate what another believes.
Praxis – Each individual is free to reconstruct and use content in the way
he/she considers it most useful.
Reciprocity – Everyone benefits from the success, experiences, and learning
of others. All are rewarded by what one contributes.
