TEACHER’S CORNER

INTEGRATION OF MATHEMATICS TO HUMAN VALUES

GAURAV ANAND

H.O.D.MATHEMATICS

There are primarily ten values in learning mathematics. They are practical values, intellectual values, social values, moral values,
disciplinary values, cultural values, international values, aesthetic values, vocational values and psychological values. Mathematics has
application everywhere. We know that it is a universal subject. We can’t consider anything without mathematics. We observed that
mathematics has relation with life, other subjects, and different branches of mathematics and different topics of same subject. Mathe-
matics is a main part in our daily life.
Here by I would like to exhibit relationship or integration of mathematics to human values in my respective column for the newsletter
“Vibes”. I would like to show the integration of angles to our everyday life.
Topic: Angles (acute, obtuse, right):
It is essential that we look at the people and events around us from different angles. True wisdom is looking at things from a wide
(obtuse) angle. if we look at our own personal troubles and problems through a narrow (acute) angle it is very easy for us to make too
much of them – but if we look from a wide angled view we can see that they are really very small and negligible in relation to the whole
world. This makes it easier for us to be strong and to deal in a healthy way with these troubles.
Right angles can be joined together by their flat sides. If we join four right angles together we can create a circle.

Four right angles together in this way form a buttress that represents solidarity.

It is because the flat sides of the right angle can give this solidarity that it used in building, to keep buildings sturdy and level, so that we

YOUR TEXT HEREcan feel safe and supported. Without right angles everything would be crooked and would have the feeling of instability. In science we

have the elements silica and carbon. Silica is the building block for just about all minerals and stones, and carbon is the same for organic
life. The atoms of both silica and carbon are structured from four ninety-degree angled spokes, i.e. interlocking right angles. This is why
they are so strong. We can relate this to ourselves and identify what we can do to be like right angles. We know the strength in unity. if
one right angle is strong, interlocking right angles is much stronger – similarly if we have people of strong character working together
with right perception, it will give an extra force to their strength.
I conclude the relationship of angles with life and hoping to share various other integrations in forth coming months.

REPORT ON THE Debate is one of the academic activities that give students creative
INTER - SCHOOL room to express what they feel. The length and breadth of knowl-
DEBATE COMPETITION edge that they gain through this is simply unparalleled.
The Inter- School Debate Competition was held at Gems Our Own
Indian School (association with The Indian Consulate Dubai) in
commemoration of the 151st Birth Anniversary of Mahatma
Gandhi.
With the topic chosen“I am an Indian Citizen' is an outdated line.
'I am a world citizen' is the new tagline”. Speakers from schools
in various emirates vied for honours. Some participants argued for
the motion and some against the motion. The teams were well
prepared and they used various skills like definition, rhetoric, irony
etc. to convince the audience. The participants, armed with right
facial expressions, body movements and gestures.
All the teams exhibited great oratorical skills. Swethambari Abhirajan
and Gayatri Gopakumar of grade 9 showcased their talents in debat-
ing. The children were enthusiastic in giving their views and
displayed a deep understanding of the topic. The debaters
displayed confidence in presenting their arguments before audience
and a panel of eminent jury members.
The highlight of the event was the question answers round, as a
volley of questions were answered confidently by both the sides.
At the end of the event, the jury members expressed their views on
citizenship both Indian and World and further encouraged the
students to participate more actively in co-curricular activities
besides academics.
