having a commitment to follow Jesus, regardless of

this is the type of self-denial Christ intended

important than that. The roots of this practice
are historical, but ashes are biblical. One
scriptural interpretation asks us to think of the
ashes with regard to mourning. Remember
how Job sat in the ashes, despairing of his
situation? Dust and ashes were an outward
sign of grief in ancient times, and Job was
certainly grievous about what was
happening in his life. Also, in the book of
Esther, when Mordecai found out that all the
Jews would be killed he donned sackcloth
and ashes, and “went through the city,
wailing with a loud and bitter cry…” (Esther
4:1). In fact, as he did so, Mordecai found
many Jews wearing sackcloth and lying in
the ashes.
Ashes do prompt our thinking towards
our mortality. Yes, from dust we came and to
dust we will all return, but the ashes aren’t
meant to be a morbid angel sitting on our

THE SANCTUARY CHOIR
We have loads of beautiful choral music planned for the winter and spring of 2016! In the mix are pieces fa-
miliar to us and others that have long been in our catalogue, but rarely sung: English choral anthems, modal
anthems, etc. At Ardmore, the Sanctuary Choir is proud to sing a wide variety of quality choral literature. If you
enjoy singing… join the choir! We love to sing good music, and we also like to have a good time!
ARDMORE BELLS
We are thrilled to have two new ringers! Amelia Johnson and Trish Barfield have joined us in the New Year
and we are having a blast with them. Amelia had never rung before but reads music and is a swift learner!
Trish has previous handbell experience and is a solid ringer for sure. We are looking forward to ringing on
Sunday, February 21st, the second Sunday in Lent.
THE PRESCHOOL CHOIR
As it is Epiphany, we are singing a lot of songs with the theme of light and the concept of Jesus as the light of
the world. As we enter Lent, we will delve into songs that are more introspective and have concepts of our
service to one another. Meanwhile, we continue to learn about music: 3/4 time in particular: snow floats down,
rain is falling, falling, and the wind whishes around us in the choir room as we play games with triple meter. :)
CHILDREN’S CHOIRS
Winter weather aside, we are busy working on our Lenten anthem “A Lenten Prayer” by Robert Powell, learn-
ing our hymn of the month (No. 173 “Christ Whose Glory Fills the Skies”) and exploring music-reading skills.
After we sing on Sunday, February 14th, we will begin a new hymn of the month, No. 296 “Sing, My Tongue,
the Glorious Battle”, and will delve into Cary Ratcliff’s introspective, modern anthem “How Shall I Sing to
God?”, which we will present in March with the Sanctuary Choir.
Music for the Month and More…
Transfiguration Sunday, February 7, Communion:
The Sanctuary Choir will sing “The Glory of the Father” by Hovland and “Light Divine” by Archangelsky.
Ash Wednesday Service, February 10, 6:45PM
The Sanctuary Choir will sing “Prayer to Jesus” by George Oldroyd and “Sign Us With Ashes” by William Rowan.
Sunday, February 14, Lent 1
The Preschool Choir will sing and Children’s Choir will share “A Lenten Prayer” by Robert Powell during the Offertory. The
Sanctuary Choir will sing “I to the Hills Lift Up Mine Eyes” by Jean Berger as the Benediction Response.
Sunday, February 21, Lent 2
The Ardmore Bells with ring! Selections include: “O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee”;
“I Must Tell Jesus All of My Troubles”;
and “Sweet Hour of Prayer”.
Sunday, February 28, Lent 3
The Sanctuary Choir will share “The Stranger” and “Now and Always” by D. Lovitt.
Sunday, March 6, Lent 4, Communion
The Sanctuary Choir will sing Mendelssohn’s gorgeous “He Watching Over Israel” and Mark Miller’s moving “Even Here”
during Communion.

Happy Valentine’s Day!!! Yes, Valentine’s Day will be here soon. This is the month to show love for oth-
ers. But I think that every month is a month of love at Ardmore UMC. Many members do special, loving deeds
for each other every day, especially for our seniors. It is wonderful to be part of a loving, caring congregation.
It is always enjoyable to visit senior friends, but last month it was a special treat when I visited Marian
and Donald Funderburk. It was so good to visit Marian at home, rather than at the hospital. Did you know
that Donald is a dulcimer maker? He made one for Lisa Wishon, a former Ardmore UMC associate minister
several years ago. Lisa had been taking dulcimer lessons and she was in Winston-Salem recently and wanted
to play her dulcimer for Donald. Lisa went with me to visit the Funderburks and she played her dulcimer for
them. It was a treat for Donald to see her enjoy playing the instrument that he had made for her. It was also
nice for friends to reconnect with each other. Haven’t I said before that Ardmore has some amazing and tal-
ented seniors? I’ll share more about other amazing and talented seniors in future articles.
Our January Young at Heart program was cancelled due to the winter weather. Bob Barton will be
back with his guitar in April and we hope to have someone from the Sheriff’s Department to inform us on how
to avoid scams and frauds also in April.
Our February Young at Heart program will be Tuesday, February 23, 2016 at 11:45 a.m. in the Bob Mar-
tin Hall. The program will be presented by author Kim Underwood and his wife Garnet Goldman, an artist.
You may remember Kim for his articles in the Winston-Salem Journal a few years ago. Kim has also written
some books, which Garnet has illustrated. I’m sure that we will enjoy hearing from them. The cost of the meal
is $ 8.00 and all ages are invited to attend. Call me (723-5566) or e-mail me ([email protected]) by
Tuesday, February 16 to make your reservations. Invite a friend.
February can be a cold, snowy month. Stay warm and be safe when you are out and about, and at
home. We don’t want any accidents. Call me if I can run any errands for you. I’ll be happy to help you out.
During this month of love, keep this quote in mind…”Taking time for love is more important than getting things
accomplished.” (unknown)

Faith Box was founded with a focus to help parents who may
have infants in neonatal care at local hospitals. Faith Box serves
to provide premature infant clothing for parents as they welcome
their new baby home. Ardmore UMC has been designated a drop off
location for new clothing that will fit premature infants. These clothes
will be delivered through Faith Box to parents around the state as out-
reach for support after long stays in hospitals. A box designated "Faith
