Christ Church, Creston Vicar’s Desk
Sunday Service: 9:30am
How to Live a Life of Stewardship? Our National Church has put
St. Anselm’s, Boswell forward five areas of work or mission for us as a church. They
1st Sunday of Month: 1:30pm are known as the Five Marks of Mission. Over the next few edi-
tions of Vicar's Desk, I will be briefly addressing these marks of
Harrison Memorial, Crawford Bay mission.
3rd Sunday of Month: 1pm One of these marks of mission is: To strive to safeguard the integrity of
creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth. Given the dramatic ef-
Riondel Community Church fects of our weather this summer, it seems quite appropriate to talk about this
3rd Sunday of Month: 3pm mark of mission at this time. Our prayers and thoughts go out to all who have
been affected by the changing and volatile weather we have all experienced
this past season. It's hard not to avoid thinking about how all these events
have come to be. Is it changing weather patterns? Global warming? Or if we
were to consult some fundamentalists, a sign of some sort reaching biblical
proportions? For whatever the reason, it is clear that our environment, our
world is changing and there is not a whole lot we can really do about it. But
then again, maybe there is. Perhaps by reflecting upon this mark of mission,
we may begin to find a way to bring about a positive change. We all as indi-
viduals and collectively as a Church have the power to change practices,
change governments and yes, help bring about a positive change in how our
environment is treated. By examining our own practices of recycling, the
amount of power and energy we consume, where we buy our coffee, how of-
ten and how far are we prepared to drive and so on all serve to help inform
how we are living into this mark of mission and help transform us as a people
and a Church.
By consciously thinking about the kinds of choices we make and how they
may affect the world in which we live, we not only begin to live into the spirit
of the marks of mission, but we also begin to live a life of stewardship. A life
of stewardship is not only about money, but rather is a whole-stick approach
to how we actively live out our Christian life in the ordinary every day.
Yours in the Ministry We Share,
Rev. Robin Ruder Celiz

250-428-4248 On July 5 at 7 pm a group of us met at the church and spent
Arleigh McKenna (Peoples’ Warden) two hours setting up for our “Garage Sale” happening the next
250-428-0249 morning. Friday we met again and opened the doors at 10 am.
Faye MacKay( Rector’s Warden) Rev David Robinson said a short prayer, which I’m sure helped.
250-428-8873 We had a very good turnout. At 1 o’clock we closed the doors and
Brenda Panio (Treasurer) did a clean-up.

St. Anselm’s The week before the sale Thelma and her daughter made a
Mary Smith-Carruthers beautiful basket which included two of Anna’s lovely cups and sau-
250-223-8345 cers and all the matching goodies (teabags, cookies and a table
Harrison Memorial cloth). We sold tickets for $1.00 each both at the garage sale and
Sue Philp (People’s Warden) at church the following Sunday. The winner of the raffle was Coral
250-227-9140 Welwood.
Karen Gilbert (Rector’s Warden)
250-227-8914 The total amount raised from the raffle and garage sale ended
Riondel Community Church up being $803.83. This money is to go towards our roof fund. A
Wendy Scott special note: a little boy gave his savings of 3 cents for a puzzle.

The special group of nine people who put this all together were:
Dan and Lorraine; Bill and Nan; David and Patricia; Nellie, Thelma
and Betty.
Editor’s note: Anna Purves was a long standing and very active
member of the Christ Church Anglican in Creston. She passed
away earlier this year. Her children donated some of the contents
of her house to Christ Church, which is why this sale took place.

Riondel Community Church
Submitted by Wendy Scott
It’s not just us ordinary folk who like to take holidays and gather family around us in the summer months.
Strangely enough, priests, pastors, and ministers of all stripes tend to consider it an absolute must to take a
few days, sometimes a week or so, at this time of year. Since ministers normally have family obligations, this
is understandable, but for a Community Church such as ours, it sometimes means a bit of a scramble to fill
that suddenly blank Sunday. There is, however, an advantage here, too, as we can draw from several de-
nominations.
Gaps appeared for us in July and our good and faithful friend, Canon Jim Hearne, stepped in for the first
Sunday; the fourth Sunday was filled with what turned into quite a special service conducted by Brother Jeff
Zak from Nelson. Jim will come over for us twice in August and Bill Gooding will worship with us for his regu-
lar second and fourth Sunday services. We are most grateful as well to our organist/pianist, Marie Gale, for
not missing any of those Sundays, and since she also plays for Most Holy Redeemer RC Church next door,
this means double duty for the dear lady.
The first Sunday in August falls on the Riondel Daze weekend. It will be a busy time for us as our ladies
and those from our RC neighbours (thanks to Sharon Lloyd & Judy Bounds for organizing this) will be arrang-
ing desserts for a Pasta Dinner and Silent Auction beginning at 5:30 pm on Saturday, August 4, at Riondel
Community Centre.
On the first Sunday in September, our ladies will again be involved in gathering refreshments for a Line
Dance Waltz workshop hosted by ballroom dancers, Pennie and David Scott. After the workshop, Donnie
Clark’s Dixieland group will play for a dance. Mark it on your calendar – it’s a great way to donate to the roof
fund and have a bit of a workout at the same time!
These are special events to raise much-needed funds towards the construction of a new roof. If these and
other fund-raisers are not successful, Riondel will face a significant probability of losing the building,
Both these events promise to be a lot of fun. Check out some of the auction items at www.riondel.ca/
auction and if you are in town for Riondel Daze, you are welcome to come into the church any time during the
day on Saturday or Sunday.
Enjoy your summer and – bring your visitors to church!
CREATOR IMPOTENS
Am I the Sun that you should worship me?
The ochre storm that glowers above our hills?
The drifting snow that steel-grey winter spills
To turn our marshes to a blue-white sea?
Am I the strength that sets the captives free?
The healing touch that glowing health instils
In dying folk? The flashing sword that kills
All evil? The Miracle of mirth and glee?
Oh! Look and see that I am more than these
Dear things you love with passion’s vivid flame!
See Me in creatures you, unseeing proud
Despise and overlook – the beggars’ pleas,
The bruised and dull-eyed face of helpless shame,
The jostled child lost sobbing in the crowd.
